Chen Rui shook his head, a faint smile appearing on his face. "The truth is, most of this equipment is from the early century. Although its firepower isn't weak, it's already quite dated. For confidentiality reasons, this Nuclear Control Center hasn't had any equipment transferred from the military since it was built. The defense forces were also selected through multiple layers of screening; their combat effectiveness isn't the strongest, but they are the most reliable. And I can assure you that I really am just..."
"Why is that? Right now, we can't even break through that massive firepower network, so how can we penetrate the interior?" White Wolf sighed, clearly having calculated the firepower strength of that batch of machine guns and deducing that the six of them would be unable to breach that firepower network.
Chen Rui furrowed his brow and slammed his fist on the table. "Let me finish!"
The sudden outburst startled the six of them. In the past few days, they had only seen Chen Rui lose his temper twice—once when Elephant General requested to terminate the mission, and now. Although they couldn't understand what had provoked him, they instinctively fell silent.
"The equipment from twenty years ago is the U.S. Military's first batch of fully automated Fire Control Systems. Due to safety and confidentiality concerns, this Fire Control System has not been updated to this day, and all the equipment in the base is also from twenty years ago. While it's not obsolete, its operational efficiency can't compare to today's standards."
White Wolf quickly caught on and asked urgently, "What do you mean?"
Chen Rui glanced at White Wolf. "I will ensure that their high Machine Guns and automatic cannons won't fire a single round."
Because that batch of weapons was heavy defensive equipment, they could only be activated manually before automatically locking onto targets and attacking. However, if the system were damaged, those weapons could not be operated by human effort alone. This had been a significant issue for the military up until now because traditional weapons and those controlled by Fire Control Systems were designed completely differently, and automated weapons were vastly different from manually operated ones.
However, if automated weapons lost their fire control computers, it would be like traditional rifles losing their soldiers—completely ineffective.
Chen Rui pointed again at the high-voltage power tower. "All power for this base is transmitted through here, so all we need to do is blow this up..."
White Wolf interrupted Chen Rui again. "That's not feasible. Generally speaking—no, historically all important military bases have their own diesel generators. This tactic would only let them know we are coming."
"No! Listen," Chen Rui continued. "All the equipment in this base is twenty years old. According to the original blueprints, they should be using the U.S. Military's AN-15 equipment, which was put into production in 1995. Even if it was new twenty years ago, after such a long time, it would have aged considerably. Moreover, that equipment has a startup time of fifty-one seconds!" Chen Rui smiled lightly, still sending chills down their spines.
"But just in case, such equipment would generally be kept on standby, right?"
Chen Rui scoffed dismissively. "Think about it—twenty years on standby? I doubt they haven't replaced any equipment; that generator is probably close to being scrapped as well. They likely only activate it occasionally for maintenance."
Indeed, this was something that could easily be deduced with a little thought; there was no need for discussion. With such a vast amount of intelligence as a foundation, they had subconsciously overlooked self-analysis.
"In any case, we'll deal with these matters later; for now, our main focus should still be on our Fox Sister." Chen Rui smiled at the fox with an indescribable look in his eyes.
"Ugh!" The fox shot an annoyed glance at Chen Rui and ignored his words.
"At this point, I believe George should have sent some information by now." Chen Rui pointed at the fox's trench coat pocket with a smirk and said playfully, "Why don't you take out your phone and check? He probably wants to invite you out for some fun."
Although reluctant, the Fox was also curious to see if this person's words held any truth. Pulling out a phone from the pocket of his trench coat, he found no missed calls or messages displayed on the screen.
With a smile, the Fox raised his phone. "It seems your words are..."
"Ding—" A soft sound accompanied by a slight vibration from the phone reached everyone's ears. The expressions of the six changed simultaneously, and the Fox opened the message in disbelief. The sender was: George!!!
Sender: George [1-156……]
Dear Sister, I wonder if you have time tomorrow to watch a movie with me. I would be immensely grateful...
The six turned their gazes toward Chen Rui, their eyes filled with doubt and fear, but more so with silent sighs. This man was completely using them as pawns, while he himself was the one orchestrating everything.
This feeling was nothing like the past when they charged into battle for their commander; instead, it felt as if they were being manipulated silently, like pieces on a chessboard moved only by someone else's hand.
This man was terrifying!!!
"Don't be surprised. I figured that by this time, George would have returned to the port and couldn't sleep in bed, which is why he sent you a message," Chen Rui said with a slight smile, unfazed by their expressions.
"Do you think you're some kind of sorcerer..." White Wolf choked out. Though his words sounded like teasing, his tone was incredibly heavy.
Chen Rui sighed and prepared to leave. Before stepping out, he added, "Who knows? You all should get some rest. This place is still safe; at least three teams will be here tomorrow, and the Fox's spirit should be high. Fox, George is waiting for you to meet him!"
With a loud bang as the iron door slammed against its frame, it felt as if the weight that had been hanging over everyone's hearts finally lifted. Although Chen Rui was part of the Allied Forces and their superior, the pressure he brought was far greater than that of an equally skilled foreign special forces unit.
Elephant General awkwardly smiled and clapped his hands, looking at the Fox. "Everyone go back to sleep. I'll keep watch tonight. Understood? Wolf, then Tiger, followed by Lion Brother; Big Dog will rotate back until you deal with George."
The Fox raised an eyebrow and lightly mocked, "Isn't this place supposed to be safe? Then there’s no need for a night watch." Elephant General's rotation clearly excluded himself from duty. Although he indeed bore heavy responsibilities, receiving special treatment in such matters was something the Fox was completely unwilling to accept.
Elephant General smiled faintly and patted the Fox on the shoulder. "If you want to lighten our burden, then quickly win George's favor and trust."
With that said, the Fox had nothing more to say. Except for Elephant General still sitting on the sand deep in thought, everyone else returned to their rooms. The Fox glanced helplessly at Elephant General lost in contemplation, knowing what troubled him but unable to alleviate his worries because he understood that question resided in each of their hearts—Chen Rui.
The next day:
"Even though it's a date, is it really okay to be this intimate on just the second meeting?" White Wolf watched as the Fox and George walked together under the shade of trees on the street, feeling a genuine concern arise within him. This rapid progression gave him an illusion that it might be a trap set by George.
Chen Rui chuckled beside him. "You'll understand once you've settled in the U.S. for a while. Americans are very particular about etiquette in some aspects, yet quite free and open in others. For instance, a typical American would never say 'Welcome!' to someone visiting their home. At most, they might say 'Come on in.' That's just cultural differences..."
White Wolf pushed Chen Rui's face away in disgust. This guy was like a walking encyclopedia, knowing everything about everything, but he wasn't in the mood to hear any of it. "Don't forget your identity. What if someone sees us together? And just following me like this—are you sure there won't be any issues at the office?"
"I wouldn't come over if I wasn't sure everything was fine! I've done a lot of things, but I've never spied on anyone's date, haha!" Chen Rui gave a thumbs up, his eyes sparkling with an inexplicable light.
White Wolf rolled his eyes helplessly at him. Since Chen Rui had no issues, as a subordinate, he had no reason to doubt his superior.
"L4! L4! Turn off the radio while you're chatting! The whole channel is filled with your voices! What are you doing?" Lion Brother's voice crackled through the earpiece. White Wolf shot an exasperated glare at Chen Rui before continuing to stealthily follow the affectionate couple ahead.
"L! L! The target is about to enter the cinema!" Tiger's voice came through the earpiece as well. "Should we follow them? There’s a risk of being spotted!"
The big dog quickly responded, "They're not watching a romantic movie; it's a more mainstream fantasy film. We can pair up and go in together. Even if we're seen, it won't raise any suspicion."
"Agreed! L and L will pair up, and L4 and L5 will pair up. The two groups will enter the cinema separately. Hopefully, that movie isn't too popular." Lion Brother quickly approved this plan, but since George and his companion had already bought their tickets in advance, it was uncertain whether they could successfully get tickets for the same showing.
"Damn it, you left me out!" Chen Rui lamented as he tossed his head back in frustration and shot a smirk at White Wolf. "Hurry up and get into the cinema! That movie is really popular right now, and it's only the first week—if you don't hurry, you might not get tickets!"
In a panic, White Wolf instinctively obeyed Chen Rui's command, subconsciously ignoring the source of his overwhelming anxiety.
The transmission quality of the earpiece was so poor that even if it were pressed against someone's ear, it would be hard to hear what was coming through clearly. Yet Chen Rui was far enough from White Wolf to grasp what they were worried about...
