"Over here!" A voice called from the distance of the corridor, prompting everyone to quickly hide at the junction between the passage and the Silo. It was quite a squeeze for five people in such a narrow space; if someone were to throw a Grenade in their direction, none of them would likely escape unscathed.
The Elephant General raised his right hand to signal a halt to the attack, then immediately set the fuse of a Fragmentation Grenade to the shortest duration of fifteen seconds. After pulling the pin, he swiftly tossed it forward.
"Thud, thud." Two sounds echoed as the massive explosion sent fragments from the passing Grenade whizzing by them. In such a confined environment, the lethality of a Fragmentation Grenade was extremely high; unless one could take cover around a corner like the Elephant General or behind some equipment, there was little chance of avoiding the blast.
The entire corridor would be swept by the shrapnel from the Grenade, with a precise radius of fifteen meters and a lethal radius of thirty-five meters, making it impossible for anyone to escape its deadly range.
"Charge!" The Elephant General quickly raised his rifle to his chest and rolled sideways into the corridor. Spotting soldiers on the ground still writhing in agony, he swiftly delivered two rounds to help them find relief.
A Fragmentation Grenade was an anti-personnel device; its explosive power wasn't particularly strong. Its main lethality came from the explosion propelling its shell and shrapnel outward at high speeds, inflicting damage on infantry.
For those hit, it felt akin to being struck by several or even dozens of flying knives, and the level of pain was unimaginable.
Tiger followed closely behind the Elephant General's movements. After sending those soldiers off, he couldn't help but ask, "Are you sure we're going this way? What if their defensive forces are stationed somewhere else and not near the Control Center?"
The Elephant General stared blankly at Tiger for a moment; why did this guy always have to say such pessimistic things?
Big Dog crouched behind the Elephant General, his hands continuously tapping on the screen of his Tactical Tablet, his expression fluctuating between good and bad.
Watching Big Dog fiddling with something resembling a three-dimensional map on his Tactical Tablet, Tiger couldn't resist teasing him. "You do know that we don't have specific internal data here, right? What is that?"
"This isn't a map of this area; it's construction blueprints. I'm matching this place's layout with the construction plans of the American military base. I might just find something that matches perfectly," Big Dog replied, his eyes glued to the Tactical Tablet as his right hand deftly tapped on the screen like someone dancing cha-cha.
Lion Brother looked worried. Continuing to linger here would only lead to more enemy forces arriving; if they got surrounded from both sides, it would truly be over for them. "Construction blueprints for military bases are usually classified documents; how could they possibly be made public?"
Big Dog nodded. "That's true, but past references and original blueprints aren't kept as classified. Only actual construction plans are stored as top secret documents. We just need a general understanding of this place's structure."
"Let's hurry up; we don't have much time left," said the Elephant General as he raised his rifle. The other three spread out to corners of the wall, using the support pillars of the corridor as cover, ready to face any impending attack from nearby enemies.
"No! There are too many similar blueprints. I need to expand the scope and increase the information to accurately pinpoint the location of the Control Center," Big Dog said helplessly as he put away the Tactical Tablet and raised his rifle like everyone else. "We should head in the direction they came from. That way can only lead to the accommodation area, training zone, or the Control Center!"
Elephant General made a forward gesture, smiling wryly. "In the end, we still have to fight our way back to their home base."
As they reached the corner, Lion Brother pulled out a shock Grenade and threw it ahead. As the shockwave passed through them, everyone quickly dashed around the corner and opened fire on the three disoriented soldiers, who collapsed immediately.
Lion Brother led the group because his reflexes were the fastest among them. Fox stayed alert at the rear, keeping an eye on their surroundings as they moved forward in a staggered formation.
"Cough, cough, cough..." When they reached the bodies of the three soldiers, Senior Brother suddenly stopped, prompting everyone else to halt as well. The silent corridor was filled with distant sounds of soldiers gathering, the clatter of military boots against metal plates echoing clearly.
But there was also a different sound, akin to an old quartz watch, producing a faint noise as its hands slowly turned.
Lion Brother's expression changed drastically; his gaze darted anxiously over the three corpses until it settled on one of them. A black spherical object had embedded itself like a needle into Lion Brother's eye.
"Damn it!" Lion Brother rushed toward that corpse. His sudden movement startled the others. Elephant General immediately shouted, "Get down!"
Elephant General pushed Tiger and Big Dog backward just as they hit the ground. A muffled explosion rang in their ears, and blood mist filled the entire corridor.
Whether it was due to temporary deafness from the explosion or something else, the corridor fell eerily silent as if haunted. Lion Brother lay over that soldier's body; most of his abdomen had been blown away, two-thirds of his torso missing.
This was undoubtedly a fragmentary anti-personnel Grenade. If Senior Brother hadn't acted as a cushion, they would likely be lying on the ground now, incapacitated.
One by one, they stood up again, feeling an overwhelming urge to fight for Lion Brother.
"Keep moving! For the mission..." Elephant General choked on his words, struggling to hold back tears. At this moment, they could not show weakness; they could not give up; they... could not fail!!!
For the mission, for their country, for their families, they... could not stop here!
No one spoke, but everyone tightened their grip on their guns, their jaws clenched in determination. They were truly prepared to face death.
The Elephant General raised his left hand, signaling the team to stop. Everyone could clearly hear the footsteps drawing closer, and this time there were more than just two or three. The chaotic sounds indicated that at least a dozen people were approaching from multiple directions— they were about to be surrounded!
“Tiger in the front, Fox in the back, move quickly!” The Elephant General decisively issued the command. The entire team took off running, but each person kept their rifle pressed against their shoulder, eyes glued to the Holographic Sight.
“We're about to encounter the enemy!” Tiger shouted, his voice muffled as they ran. Given their speed, it was clear the enemy would notice their movements, so further announcements were unnecessary.
The Elephant General quickly reached Tiger's side and lightly tapped his shoulder. “Front row spread out, back row prepare to lie down, form a U-shaped combat formation!”
As soon as he finished speaking, enemy figures appeared ahead. Fox and Big Dog dropped to the ground urgently while Tiger and the Elephant General moved to either side of the corridor, aiming at the approaching enemies. With rifles set to automatic mode, the barrage from Tiger and the Elephant General instantly took down two enemy Sergeants.
The enemy wasn’t foolish; seeing their two teammates taken out in an instant, they immediately adopted a defensive strategy, using the corners for cover while returning fire.
Although this shooting had low accuracy, their numerical advantage allowed them to create an effective barrage that hindered the advance of the enemy. They also used fragmentation grenades for support, creating a formidable wall of firepower that was difficult for lightly armed infantry to breach.
“It seems they are not your average military unit,” the Elephant General thought, feeling a headache coming on from their adaptability. Given their current situation, it was nearly impossible to break through the firepower net they had formed. Moreover, there was still an unknown number of enemies potentially closing in from behind; the urgency of their predicament could not be overstated.
Tiger glanced at the pipes along the corridor walls and immediately began shooting at them with his rifle, creating several holes. Some of these pipes desperately spewed white smoke.
Seeing that it was effective, Tiger aimed at a pipe around the corner and fired vigorously. The white smoke quickly filled the corridor, drastically reducing visibility.
Noticing their sight compromised, the enemy intensified their firepower. However, due to the smoke, all shots went towards the walls—merely an attempt to prevent Elephant General and his team from launching a surprise attack through it.
Tiger pressed against the wall and slowly approached the corner. When he neared the fire zone, he stopped and pulled out a grenade, tossing it forward.
“B!” With the sound of an explosion, the previously intense gunfire and barrage ceased entirely. The Elephant General led his team cautiously around the corner.
Due to the smoke, Elephant General and the others could not clearly see the situation here. However, from the bullet holes and bloodstains on the walls, it was evident that everyone had been hit.
“Bang!” A crisp gunshot rang out, not from a domestic rifle but from an enemy-issued handgun.
“Bang bang bang…” Tiger went wild, spraying bullets across the ground until Elephant General finally stopped him after he emptied the entire magazine.
Elephant General glanced at Tiger, noticing there were no obvious external injuries before he sighed and said loudly, “No one got hit, right?”
“I think…” A weak voice reached their ears. Elephant General quickly turned to look at Fox, who was struggling to stand and was now weakly sitting on the ground, blood soaking the area around his left kidney.
“I think I won’t be able to accompany you to see the fireworks,” Fox said with a faint smile. “You all should go; I’ll hold off the people coming from behind!”
Elephant General, Tiger, and Big Dog were momentarily stunned but quickly understood Fox's meaning. That spot was precisely where the kidneys were located. If he were in a field hospital’s operating room right now, there might be a chance to save him…
“Go quickly!” Fox shouted with all his strength, anger fueling his voice.
“You…” Tiger kicked the wall in frustration, tears streaming down his face uncontrollably.
“Don’t worry about me,” Fox's voice began to grow faint. The damage to his kidney had caused massive blood loss; whether he could hold on until the enemy arrived and retaliate was uncertain.
“Don’t worry about me… just keep… killing!”
