"What’s wrong with me?" Fan Yu retorted, not thinking he had said anything inappropriate.
Chen Rui asked, "What did that last sentence mean?"
"The literal meaning, of course. Anyway, you all still have to take responsibility for their team participating in the International Special Forces Competition. It's a new addition this year, a real combat simulation. The higher-ups already ordered you to handle their participation; didn't you know?" Fan Yu shrugged. He had known about this for quite a while but had assumed Chen Rui was aware of it too. Apparently, he was mistaken.
"Real combat simulation?" Tiger asked with a laugh. "Does that mean using dreams for a real war simulation in multiplayer?"
"That's exactly what it means," Fan Yu nodded naturally.
White Wolf frowned. "The realism of this dream comes from two aspects. First, it connects directly with the brain, with no indirect contact. Second, the amount of data is almost equivalent to that of the real world. I've been thinking about how massive the data requirements must be to run the dream we use. If it's a multiplayer battle, the data volume would be astronomical. Where in the world is there a computer large enough to store and operate that…"
White Wolf implied that he believed the previous virtual world covering a twenty-kilometer radius was already the limit; with current computing technology, creating a larger virtual space was impossible.
"Ahhhh!!! This means I have to go abroad again! I just got back! My vacation…" Chen Rui lamented, covering his face in despair, though his concerns were completely different from White Wolf's.
"Who knows?" Fan Yu smiled slightly, looking at Chen Rui and said, "Don't worry; they've already created a new world."
This news quickly spread within A Group, and the reactions among its members varied. Some worried about how their schedules would be affected, while others were concerned that this official trip abroad would still not come with overtime pay.
In any case, after Chen Rui consulted Xiang Xiao and Zhang Jun to confirm this matter, the members of A Group unanimously dropped their work and swiftly made an early exit together.
"Damn it! I'm still sitting here!" Chen Rui sat bewildered at his desk on the plane, watching the now-empty cabin and pounding his fist on the desk.
Fan Yu returned to the military district with the special forces members by special vehicle. People like them couldn't just find a hotel on the street; they were essentially human weapons created by the state, making it too unsafe for them to be in the city.
In the end, Chen Rui was urged by Wang Bolin to step down from the gangway. Their dedicated flight had been parked in Hangar 3 at Beijing Airport. Although this mission was conducted entirely on the plane, due to its lengthy duration, they hadn't taken off. The entire A Group had been working and living in the cabin day and night for four and a half hours; other groups might not have been able to endure such conditions.
Wang Bolin smiled and patted Chen Rui on the shoulder. "What are you thinking about? Hurry up and go back to prepare some clothes and your travel essentials. Do you see what time it is?"
Chen Rui glanced at his phone and realized it was already six in the evening. On a regular workday, there wouldn't be many people left in the office at this hour, especially since it was a state-owned enterprise that operated from nine to five.
They were indeed quite tired. Chen Rui couldn't help but smile at the thought. Although this group lacked organization and discipline, they had never failed or even faltered when faced with heavy tasks during critical moments.
This was one of the most remarkable aspects of A Group. Their client satisfaction and feedback ratings had always been outstanding, which might explain why their superiors allowed A Group to continue their audacious ways.
This team was truly exceptional.
Chen Rui took the opportunity to rush home, as he didn't know how long he would be abroad this time. He definitely needed to pack some clothes and toiletries. The Special Forces competition wouldn't be completed in just a day or two, especially with the preliminary preparation and communication time, not to mention the final joint simulation training.
Although he wasn't sure how the scoring for past Special Forces Competitions worked, he knew that this year's addition of joint simulation warfare would account for over fifty percent of the total score. After all, no matter how well the other tests went, nothing could compare to the practical effects of real combat.
"I'm really exhausted," Chen Rui said as he took off his suit and lay back on his bed with his arms spread wide. He knew he should take a shower now, but he felt so tired. The level of this dream was about two, and it seemed to have a faster pace; the ratio between Dream World and reality could reach 5:1.
The faster the Dream World flowed, the more fatigue it caused in a person's brain. Frequent entry into dreams could lead to severe exhaustion. This time, Chen Rui had been going in and out of dreams continuously, and under the already challenging Dream Stream conditions, he felt even greater pressure. That he had managed to hold on until now could be considered a miracle.
In fact, the faster the Dream World flowed, the more difficult and pressuring it became to enter and exit. Typically, clients would enter dreams at level one before gradually increasing the Dream Stream speed; this saved time and prevented discomfort.
However, Chen Rui did not have such privileges when exiting and entering midway; he was pushing through with sheer determination.
Why was he doing this? Chen Rui himself wasn't quite sure. It might simply be due to a sense of responsibility that felt intangible. In dreams, he couldn't control others' movements or behaviors in real-time, so that sense of responsibility compelled him to frequently enter and exit dreams.
So now he was too tired—so tired that he couldn't even muster the energy to get back up...
"Get up! Get up! What time is it and you're still sleeping?" A familiar voice jolted Chen Rui awake, and as he came to, he felt a sharp pain in his right ear.
"Ahhh!" Chen Rui cried out in agony, clutching his ear as if trying to release his suffering.
Li Xue smirked, holding up her elegant women's watch for Chen Rui to see. "See? This is why you should get up. Look at the time."
Chen Rui groggily glanced at the watch face; the hour hand clearly pointed to the lower right while the minute hand pointed directly to the right.
What time is it… Chen Rui pushed Li Xue's hand away, looking at her in frustration, unable to comprehend why she was here.
"Team Leader! Your new assistant came to greet you, but you ignored me, so I followed you in," Li Xue said, sitting on the chair at the computer desk, propping her chin on one hand with a mischievous grin. "Did you forget about me last night?"
Last night… Has she been following me this whole time? I don't remember anything…
Chen Rui forced a smile. "Even so, you didn't have to wake me up at this hour. What time is it…"
"Hour?" Li Xue looked at him in confusion and suddenly understood that she had shown him the watch upside down. At that moment, Chen Rui hadn't fully woken up and hadn’t checked the hands on the watch.
Li Xue moved closer to Chen Rui and held the watch in front of him again. His gaze swept over the watch face; the hour hand pointed to the upper left, and the minute hand also pointed to the upper left…
Nine fifty!!!
"What! Why didn't you wake me up earlier? I haven't even packed my things!" Chen Rui hurriedly jumped out of bed, only to realize he was wearing nothing but a pair of shorts. His suit and shirt were neatly folded nearby, and there was a suitcase stuffed full on the floor.
Li Xue rolled her eyes in mock disdain. "I called you several times! Each time you were half-asleep and dozed off again. I helped you tidy up a bit; now hurry up and get dressed. Everyone is probably waiting for you."
Li Xue walked out of Chen Rui's house with a carefree demeanor, and Chen Rui suddenly realized that he had only taken off his suit jacket before collapsing onto the bed, not even bothering to get under the covers.
After a quick hot shower, Chen Rui changed back into his suit and dragged his overstuffed suitcase out the door. He wasn't worried about Li Xue forgetting to pack anything for him; all his towels, toiletries, and everything else he had left in the bathroom had vanished. Even the towel he used to dry himself was new.
"What did that girl come to find me for?" Chen Rui wondered as he hailed a taxi on the street. On the way to the airport, he kept pondering this question. It seemed that Li Xue hadn't directly called him by either his name or Zijing's.
Upon arriving at the airport, Chen Rui hurriedly dragged his suitcase to the cargo entrance located in the southern part of the Waiting Hall. After showing his identification badge, he was allowed into the hangar. As soon as he entered, he saw that the Boeing Aircraft was already revving up, its engines slowly turning, and the tug was already attached.
Looks like I really came late. Chen Rui smiled awkwardly and quickly ascended the boarding stairs. Wang Bolin stood at the top of the stairs and teased him while handing over his work ID. "Being important means you always make a grand entrance."
Chen Rui shot him a glare, putting the ID around his neck as he hurried up. Wang Bolin followed him into the cabin and closed the door behind them; indeed, Chen Rui was the last one to arrive.
Typically, A Group crew members didn't carry their work IDs, but since this was an international mission representing their country, they had to be more mindful of their image. All staff members were dressed in pure black formal attire, with their IDs prominently displayed on their chests.
As the airport personnel removed the boarding stairs, the tug began to pull the Boeing Aircraft out of the hangar. Wang Bolin entered the cockpit and smoothly took his seat as Captain, while Qiaoqin sat beside him, waiting patiently.
Chen Rui wasn't a full-time co-pilot; if it were a casual situation, he could temporarily fill in as needed. However, Qiaoqin usually served as Wang Bolin's first officer.
Chen Rui made his way to an independent office in the middle of the cabin. This office was essentially just partitioned space; it couldn't compare to Xiong Kai's office at the rear of the cabin. After all, there was limited space on an aircraft, and it was quite generous for Chen Rui—who didn't need an office—to have such a sizable area allocated to him.
As he reached this spot, Chen Rui froze upon seeing Li Xue sitting in an assistant's seat. His gaze involuntarily drifted to her work ID: Assistant Team Leader, Li Xue.
What is going on here? Chen Rui's face was filled with confusion.
