"Alright, let's leave it at that. I have some matters to attend to here, so you all can head back first." Deng Jun saw everyone off at the airport.
In the morning, the meeting came to a forced conclusion with Deng Jun's non-summary summary. After all, this incident did not result in any visible losses and was not a problem for the Technical Department. The remaining task was for the Information Team to investigate those who had breached the Chen Rui Group's Control System.
However, it was heard that the intruders operated as a team, employing multiple infiltration methods before accessing their Control System through controlled computers. Such a volume of information and operations could not possibly be accomplished by just one or two people.
Since they dared to slap the faces of various national leaders so openly, they must have some tricks up their sleeves for self-preservation. It would be difficult to uncover their identities in the short term.
After the meeting concluded, all Action Teams were free to go, while Chen Rui and his group hurriedly boarded their flight back to Beijing.
It wasn't that Chen Rui and his companions didn't want to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Kiribati; at this time, Kiribati was still experiencing a very hot season, being a country straddling the equator. Standing on the beach of Kiribati and gazing at the vast ocean was indeed a very relaxing and romantic experience.
However, Chen Rui and his companions were simply too exhausted. Although the first three days were nominally for relaxation, almost everyone was preparing for their dreams, which had turned problematic. The mental pressure was not something only Chen Rui experienced. Moreover, these individuals shared a common trait: they could only truly relax when they returned home to their warm nests.
Thus, they had no intention of lingering in Kiribati and chose to head straight back. The only one dissatisfied with this decision was Li Xue. As a director of Dawn Heavy Industries, she had traveled to many renowned places around the world and had long grown weary of the tourist destinations that ordinary people dreamed of visiting.
Finally arriving at a place she had never been before—a marine nation where nature coexisted with technology—only to find she could not enjoy her time there made her quite unhappy.
"Alright, alright! Stop sulking," Chen Rui said with a smile as he gently patted Li Xue's cheek. "You like it here, right?"
Li Xue nodded but continued to pout without speaking.
"We'll come here often in the future; after all, this will be the first base for Dream World," Chen Rui said with a slight smile. "By then, you can enjoy these views as much as you want."
Li Xue thought for a moment, revealing a hint of sadness. "I see this place as a paradise, but if things go according to your plan, it seems this paradise won't last long."
Chen Rui shrugged. "Who knows? But since we've chosen this place as our operational site, we should definitely maintain some level of ecological balance here. Otherwise, wouldn't that just be slapping them in the face again?"
"Let's hope so," Li Xue replied with a bitter smile, not expressing any further opinions.
Deng Jun stayed behind in Kiribati to handle official business while Zhang Jun wanted to remain there for a while longer. Since Chen Rui Group had entered a rotation rest period, he decided to let them have their fun. Therefore, Zhang Jun and Deng Jun did not return to Beijing with them.
At the airport:
Inside the large, six-story modern airport, Chen Rui and the others passed through the VIP channel on the First Floor and entered the waiting area. They did not stop but went straight through security and boarded the shuttle bus, which took them to the Gulfstream private jet parked at a distant gate.
Since the governments of various countries had already left Kiribati before them, and the other Action Team members were not yet ready to depart, they didn't have to wait any longer and took off into the sky.
The direct flight from Kiribati to Beijing spanned nine thousand kilometers, passing through Japan and South Korea. Throughout the journey, the cabin remained very quiet. Even Li Xue sat silently, gazing out the window, lost in thought.
The plane arrived in Beijing at exactly five o'clock in the afternoon, just in time for the end of the workday. Everyone dispersed to their homes, except for Li Xue, who quietly followed Chen Rui.
"My sister! What exactly do you want?" Chen Rui finally couldn't hold back and turned to ask.
Li Xue grinned mischievously. "I'm going home with you!"
Chen Rui quickly shook his head, realizing he wasn't dreaming. "No way! Why would you come home with me? Go home and find your brother! Did he kick you out or something?"
"He wouldn't dare!" Li Xue raised her eyebrows defiantly. "If he tried that, I'd just call my dad. He'd be in big trouble!"
Got it! So Li Li is afraid of her father! Chen Rui chuckled inwardly but felt a headache coming on as he looked at the sly girl before him. "Look, if he didn't kick you out, then what's this about following me? My place can't accommodate a big Buddha like you! What if that reporter sees you? They'll think I've kidnapped you."
Li Xue pondered for a moment and laughed. "That is a possibility! But what does that have to do with me? Do you think they'd believe I willingly let you 'kidnap' me?"
Please! Can you not say such crazy things with that innocent look on your face?!
"Staying at your house is just so I can be a better assistant! Didn't Liang Yu have a key to your place?" Li Xue poked Chen Rui's chest. "Where's the key? Hand it over!"
"Uh... well, I might have forgotten where I put the spare key?" Chen Rui tried to brush it off; who knew this girl still remembered that? "But look, Liang Yu only helped me with some uniforms and documents; she never asked to live there!"
Upon hearing this, Li Xue immediately grabbed Chen Rui's ear. "Hey! You have to consider this! Liang Yu is Wang Zhongshuai's fiancée now! Do you really think she'd want to live in your lazy pigsty?"
"No, no, no! That's not what I meant!" Chen Rui winced in pain and hurriedly pleaded, "I mean, your esteemed hands are not suited for such tasks."
"Hey! Do I look like someone who can't handle it? Let me tell you, all those shares were earned by me bit by bit. I climbed up from the grassroots! Don't really think I can't do anything," Li Xue said, pulling tighter, noticing that Chen Rui's ears were starting to turn red before finally letting go.
Chen Rui immediately covered his ears and said pitifully, "Alright, alright, but you absolutely have to go back tonight! Besides, it's getting late; why don't you head back first and come again tomorrow?"
Li Xue shot him a glare. "Is there someone hiding in your place? Is that why you don't want me to go?"
"How could that be... It's not a golden house, and I definitely don't have anyone to hide!" Chen Rui replied with a bitter smile.
Li Xue was furious. "Oh? If it were a golden house? Would you dare to hide someone then?"
"How could I dare..."
The two of them strolled slowly down the street. To others, they looked like a couple playfully bickering, with few able to see that the male was suffering and not enjoying himself at all.
Chen Rui escorted Li Xue to the entrance of Dawn Heavy Industries. After sweet-talking her and handing over the spare key to her apartment, he finally sent her upstairs.
Taking a taxi back to his own place, Chen Rui felt his mood instantly relax upon seeing the familiar surroundings as he stepped inside.
In fact, there was another crucial reason why Chen Rui didn't want Li Xue to move in: the apartment was a one-bedroom layout. If Li Xue insisted on staying there, he would have to give up the bedroom, leaving only a sofa bed in the living room for sleeping.
Although that sofa bed was soft, it had been chosen with space considerations in mind when purchased. It was relatively small; while sitting on it during the day was fine, it was quite uncomfortable for sleeping. It felt like the bunk beds from twenty years ago in university dorms.
Chen Rui liked to roll around while sleeping. Once, he had fallen asleep on the sofa while watching TV and rolled off onto the floor in the middle of the night, waking up abruptly and hurting himself. Since then, he never slept on that sofa bed again.
Looking at his slightly messy home and recalling how they had rushed out earlier without tidying up, Chen Rui frowned. "I'll clean it up tomorrow."
He tossed his clothes onto the chair beside his computer desk and walked into the bathroom, letting warm water wash over his body.
“Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep…” Chen Rui was awakened by the sound of the washing machine's alarm. After taking a hot shower last night, he had collapsed onto his bed, and as soon as his tense nerves relaxed, sleep overtook him almost instantly.
“Did I… cover myself with the blanket?” Chen Rui looked at himself, surprised to find that he had indeed covered himself with the blanket. His gaze shifted to the washing machine in the bathroom, and suddenly he remembered something.
Chen Rui quietly walked into the living room and saw a slender figure lying on the small sofa bed. The soft sound of snoring indicated that she had just fallen asleep.
Chen Rui smiled lightly; he never expected this girl to be so devoted to him. No, it was more accurate to say she was devoted to Chen Zijing.
“Chen Zijing! You are such a fool! You have such a wonderful girl and yet you don't cherish her, instead choosing to challenge the limits of some country. What a way to court disaster. If you knew what Li Xue is like now, would you still recklessly do those things you did back then?” Chen Rui thought to himself, beginning to feel a hint of sympathy for this ‘sickly’ dreamer.
The dreamer was not a romantic interest but rather someone living in a dream, or one could say someone trapped in the past. Such individuals are often very pitiful; they usually have experienced some significant trauma that leads them to abandon their current reality in favor of living in memories.
Chen Rui gazed at Li Xue’s delicate face, and the longing in his eyes was unmistakable.
