In the early morning, a ray of sunlight streamed through the balcony into Chen Rui's bedroom. Chen Rui groggily stretched his sore neck; he had spent the entire night sleeping in the office chair at his desk, and it was a stroke of luck that he hadn't woken up with a stiff neck.
"How did I get myself into this mess?" Chen Rui chuckled bitterly to himself. He couldn't fathom what had possessed him to allow Li Xue to stay over last night. Now, he felt utterly exhausted and had no energy left to attend the wedding.
"Hurry up! It's almost eight o'clock! It's rush hour! Will we even make it to Liang Yuniang's house before nine?" Li Xue's anxious voice came from the bathroom, accompanied by the sound of running water from the faucet.
Chen Rui stretched lazily and yawned. "What's the rush? Didn't you just wake up too?"
"I promised Liang Yu that I would be there before nine! How am I supposed to explain this to her if we're late?" Li Xue replied with a hint of resentment in her tone, her words laced with a sense of frustration.
When did your relationship become so friendly? They had only met once and shaken hands… Chen Rui couldn't help but imagine Li Xue having a heart-to-heart talk with Liang Yu, and he sighed in resignation.
"What are you worried about? If traffic is really that bad, just call for a helicopter from Dawn Headquarters to pick us up! I refuse to believe we'd run into air traffic control!" Chen Rui joked, teasing Li Xue about her status.
Li Xue's eyes lit up as she clapped her hands. "Hey! That could actually work!"
"No, no, no! I'm just kidding! That would be blatantly disrespectful!" Chen Rui quickly backtracked. If they really dropped down from a helicopter in front of so many people, who knows what kind of expressions the bride and groom would have?
Li Xue emerged from the bathroom, holding up a dress from the hanger. "You're so silly! Do we really have to land right at their doorstep? We can find a helipad or an open space near Liang Yuniang's house and just walk over!"
Chen Rui thought for a moment; that plan was indeed feasible. The capital city had changed significantly over the past decade. Most residential buildings, shopping malls, and office towers now had helipads on their rooftops. It wasn't uncommon for people in Beijing to own helicopters, but having the freedom to use one—meaning possessing a flight permit—was still quite rare.
"What are you standing there for? Go wash your face and change your clothes! I'm calling my brother right now," Li Xue said, raising an eyebrow at Chen Rui still sitting in his computer chair, pretending to be angry.
Chen Rui tossed the blanket off himself and walked into the bathroom to wash his face.
Since Li Xue had resigned from her position on the board of Dawn, she no longer had the authority to directly arrange personnel changes within the group. Her brother was different; Li Li was the chairman of Dawn Heavy Industries and president of Dawn Group. Although his management powers had been largely undermined by government intervention, arranging for a helicopter was still within his capabilities, and no one could question him since he remained the nominal president of Dawn Group.
After finishing his grooming, Chen Rui changed into yesterday's outfit: a blue striped blazer, a beige printed shirt, blue casual pants paired with beige low-top canvas shoes. He looked like a youthful man in his twenties, easily appearing seven or eight years younger than his actual age.
Li Xue placed her phone into her handbag and scrutinized Chen Rui closely, checking every accessory he wore when suddenly she realized she had forgotten something crucial.
"Oh no! My belt!" Li Xue exclaimed as she slapped her forehead; how could she have overlooked such an important item?
Chen Rui was currently wearing a black business leather belt that clashed entirely with his outfit. Li Xue walked back and forth before finally pulling Chen Rui's shirt out from his waistband, letting it hang loosely outside.
With that adjustment, his semi-formal suit instantly transformed into a casual look, effectively masking any awkwardness caused by the belt.
"Let's leave it at that! I'll have someone get you a suitable belt later!" Li Xue sighed lightly, as if feeling disappointed by her own oversight.
Chen Rui tightened his slightly loose waistband and straightened his beige shirt to completely cover the belt, smiling as he said, "This is fine; I'm already very satisfied!"
"Then it's settled! The helicopter should be arriving soon." After checking her outfit to ensure everything was in order, Li Xue linked arms with Chen Rui and walked out of the house, taking the elevator to the rooftop.
The predecessor of Dawn Group, and its largest subsidiary, Dawn Heavy Industries, was renowned for developing military weapons. However, its business had expanded into a wide range of areas, leading to the formation of the all-encompassing Dawn Group.
Of course, the government would not be overly harsh on the Li Family; their control extended only to Dawn Heavy Industries. Moreover, they primarily managed the military and export departments, while the management rights for other civilian equipment remained with the Li Family. The government had not arbitrarily extracted wealth from within Dawn Heavy Industries, which was why Li Li could tolerate being bullied.
After all, the country's stance was clear: you can make money as long as you pay your taxes normally, but you are absolutely not allowed to control an entire weapons production chain, as that poses too great a threat to the nation.
In fact, Dawn Heavy Industries controlled more than just one weapons production chain; it was involved in everything from the research and production of military-standard rifles to Fusion Weapons. Its weapon production efficiency was on par with any Second World country and even surpassed that of some First World nations!
Therefore, Chen Rui was not surprised by their high execution efficiency because the employees at Dawn Heavy Industries exhibited a level of discipline comparable to that of the national military. As long as tasks fell within their capabilities and responsibilities, nothing was impossible to accomplish!
When Chen Rui and Li Xue arrived at the rooftop, a military-civilian dual-use multipurpose helicopter had been waiting on the helipad for quite some time. An employee dressed in black Dawn attire slightly bowed to Li Xue and called out loudly, "Mr. Li!"
"I'm no longer a director! No need to be so formal!" Li Xue replied coldly. "Hurry up! We're in a rush!"
"Understood!" The employee led Chen Rui and Li Xue onto the helicopter, quickly closed the cabin door, fastened Li Xue's seatbelt, signaled to the pilot, and then the helicopter took off smoothly without any delay.
"After you take us to our destination, you can head back! No need to wait for us," Li Xue said softly while looking out the window.
The roar of the helicopter's engine made it nearly impossible for Chen Rui to hear what Li Xue was saying. However, the Dawn employee sitting across from her shouted back, "Understood!"
In the air, there would be no congestion like on the ground. Besides, it was only eight-thirty in the morning: office workers were rushing to their jobs while bosses prepared materials for morning meetings. During this busy time when everyone was occupied, hardly anyone noticed a low-flying black helicopter passing overhead.
The helicopter dropped Chen Rui and Li Xue off on top of a thirty-five-story residential building, which happened to be Liang Yuniang's home.
Chen Rui glanced at his watch; it had only taken seven minutes from boarding the helicopter to arriving at their destination. If they had driven instead, they would likely still be stuck at some intersection.
"I finally understand why Dawn Heavy Industries is under control from above," Chen Rui said with a wry smile as he looked at Li Xue. "This is not a company; it's clearly an army!"
Li Xue did not deny it. "Yes! It truly is an army! Since my brother took charge of Dawn Heavy Industries, the number of retired soldiers among employees has significantly increased. The company's discipline has greatly improved as well, bringing about tremendous efficiency and profits over time. Eventually, it became what you see now."
"Let's hurry down; where does Liang Yu live?" Seeing that Li Xue had become serious about this topic, Chen Rui quickly changed subjects and pulled her towards the stairwell.
Li Xue looked at Chen Rui, who had taken the initiative to pull her along, momentarily stunned. A barely visible smile flickered at the corner of her mouth. "Liang Yu's family isn't here! This is Liang Yu's maternal home!"
"Oh come on! It's all the same, as long as you understand," Chen Rui replied with a wry smile.
The two of them were unaware of the exact location of Liang Yuniang's family, but they knew that weddings were quite straightforward affairs. They took the elevator straight to the First Floor and immediately spotted a reception area set up at the entrance of the residential building.
"Excuse me... is Liang Yu..." Chen Rui began to ask, but suddenly noticed that among the few people there stood a woman in a white wedding dress, adorned with a pristine veil.
Just then, the owner of the veil turned at the sound of his voice. The beautiful face of Zhang Jun appeared right in front of Chen Rui, leaving him awkwardly speechless.
"What’s wrong... you..." Li Xue followed closely behind Chen Rui and nudged him for stopping so abruptly, only to also catch sight of Zhang Jun's stunning face.
Liang Yu smiled gently. "Oh, it’s Team Leader Chen and Sister Li! How wonderful..." She started to say but then realized she couldn't finish her sentence. If Li Xue and Chen Rui had walked in from outside, she could have welcomed them warmly, but these two had come from inside the building...
Liang Yu quickly understood what had just happened with the helicopter, but being clever, she chose not to bring up such an awkward topic and instead smiled it off.
"You arrived just in time! I need to go hide at my mom's place now. Sister Li, come with me! Team Leader Chen, please help block them here! They’ll be arriving soon!" Liang Yu said as she grabbed her skirt with one hand and pulled Li Xue along with the other towards the elevator.
Chen Rui glanced at the time; it was eight thirty-nine in the morning. He could already faintly hear the roar of engines from a convoy not far away.
The groom was coming!
