"Damn it!" Li Chunbo slammed his hand against the glass window, angrily asking, "How can there still be people in the combat zone?"
The Fox was also in a bad mood and shouted back, "How should I know? Hurry up and go protect them!"
"Stop glaring. I'll report to Lion Brother. You get down there quickly. You don't need to bring them directly up here; just take them to the office on the First Floor," Tiger interjected, stepping between the two to prevent their standoff.
Li Chunbo shot a displeased glance at the Fox before rushing to the elevator, frantically pressing the button for the first floor as if that would make it arrive faster.
Once he reached the first floor, Li Chunbo quickly dashed out of the office and sprinted onto the street, soon spotting the father from the family. The four of them followed Li Chunbo into the office on the first floor.
Suppressing his anger, Li Chunbo calmly asked, "Why didn't you leave according to the government's evacuation plan? Don't you know how dangerous it is here?"
The sudden questioning startled the family of four. After a moment, the young mother shook her head and cried, "We wanted to leave earlier, but something came up at the last minute. We thought we could wait a bit longer before evacuating. Who knew…"
The young father, now realizing what was happening, clearly held no fondness for Li Chunbo. He frowned and retorted, "Whether we evacuate or not is our decision. Your responsibility is to protect us! And now you're here questioning me instead of fulfilling your duty? The taxes we pay are meant to support useless people like you?"
Li Chunbo was already in a foul mood, and being confronted like this only made him angrier. He grabbed the man's collar and coldly replied, "How do you know we haven't been protecting you? How do you know we haven't fulfilled our obligations? Do you have any idea what we've been through? The reason you can live here is because countless of my comrades died at that damned port!"
The young mother sat frozen in fear beside him, while the two siblings, around six or seven years old, tugged at Li Chunbo's arm, shouting, "Bad guy! Let go of my dad!"
Meanwhile, in the northeast corner office on the rooftop:
"What? There are still civilians who haven't evacuated? How many?" Lion Brother asked in surprise.
Tiger replied urgently, "A family of four. But I suspect there are definitely more people who haven't evacuated; there must be others trapped in the Binhai New Area port!"
Lion Brother furrowed his brow and immediately pulled out the walkie-talkie from his chest, pressing the communication button. "This is Defense Unit 19. We have encountered civilians who have not evacuated. Please advise! Over!"
"Unit 19! Number of civilians unaccounted for! Over!"
"Currently, there are four individuals, two men and two women, including two children. Additionally, we suspect there are more unaccounted personnel in Binhai New Area! Requesting instructions, over!"
"Unit 19! We order you to ensure the safe evacuation of these four civilians to the nearest Evacuation Point! I will dispatch a helicopter to pick you up. As for the port area in Binhai New Area! it is not under your jurisdiction, and you are not permitted to return to the port area! Over!"
Lion Brother was taken aback for a moment, then replied after a pause, "Understood... over!"
"Take them and prepare for evacuation! Fox and White Wolf will continue guiding the Missile here! Follow shortly!" Lion Brother picked up the sniper rifle from the table and quickly left the office with the big dog and Tiger, running down the stairs.
As soon as they reached the bottom floor, Lion Brother saw Li Chunbo grabbing an adult man's collar. He rushed over and pulled Li Chunbo away, sternly questioning, "What are you doing?"
Li Chunbo glared at Lion Brother, slowly coming back to his senses. He sighed, "Sorry, I got too worked up!"
Lion Brother shot a glare at Li Chunbo, reprimanding him, "You can't act like this just because you're in a bad mood!" He turned to the man and bowed slightly. "Apologies, we just came down from the Coastal Frontline, so our soldier's emotions are a bit unstable. Please forgive us."
Initially feeling somewhat smug after seeing Li Chunbo being reprimanded, Young Father was immediately taken aback upon hearing that they had just come from the 'Coastal Frontline.' He sighed and said, "I'm sorry if my words unintentionally hurt this brother; you all are doing great."
Seeing that the atmosphere was no longer awkward, Lion Brother quickly added, "The higher-ups require us to escort you to the nearest Evacuation Point! There will be a helicopter waiting to take you away, so we hope you can cooperate!"
The Young Couple exclaimed in surprise, "Really? We can leave directly from here? That's wonderful! Let's hurry!"
Li Chunbo glanced at Lion Brother and the others, asking, "What about White Wolf and the Fox People? Aren't they retreating?"
Lion Brother shook his head. "We need to leave now. The missile is about to arrive, and they still have to guide it. They'll catch up later! The enemy's ground troops are advancing toward us, and we don't have much time. Hold the children and evacuate quickly!"
Li Chunbo and Tiger each carried a child while the Young Couple walked ahead. Lion Brother and the big dog alternated behind them, keeping watch.
As they ran, the big dog tapped on the Tactical Tablet. Soon, he called out to Tiger, who was leading the way, "Turn right up ahead, then go straight to the fourth intersection and turn left. After that, go straight to the fourth intersection again and turn right; you'll reach the Evacuation Point, which is a Hanting Hotel! It's a total distance of four kilometers! There’s an Agricultural Bank nearby, so it should be easy to find!"
Tiger repeated the route in his mind but suddenly shouted, "Wait a minute, Big Dog! If we go straight to the fourth intersection and then turn left, that street is right next to Jingmen Avenue! Li Chunbo frowned slightly and asked, "Yeah, and the Evacuation Point is too close to Jingmen Avenue. Isn't it less than two hundred meters away? What if the enemy arrives there before us?"
Before the big dog could respond, a loud explosion echoed from behind them. They turned slightly to see a massive explosion near Linhai Interchange, with a mushroom cloud slowly rising.
Soon after, a second missile struck the same location, resulting in another huge explosion and another towering mushroom cloud.
"Wow, that was impressive! Look at those explosions; they must have detonated the tank's ammunition depot!" The big dog laughed heartily and said to Lion Brother, "You should commend him for this!"
Lion Brother smiled lightly. "Haha, indeed! I wonder how many tanks they lost because of those two hits."
"B—" Another massive explosion occurred, leaving everyone stunned. This time, however, the blast wasn't near Linhai Interchange but just one or two hundred meters behind them...
The top floor of an office building had been shelled...
The third missile flew in, but without laser guidance, it struck based solely on the previously input coordinates. However, due to the advance of the enemy tanks, the intended target was no longer where it should have been, resulting in a relatively small explosion.
Everyone stood frozen, staring blankly to the south, struggling to believe what they were witnessing. But then the fourth missile missed entirely, shattering any remaining hope among them.
"Retreat!" Lion Brother's voice was low and heavy, yet it carried an unmistakable tone of anger.
Li Chunbo felt a sting in his eyes and asked, "But..."
"I said retreat! Do you not understand orders?!" Lion Brother shouted at Li Chunbo. "You still have civilians on your back! So now, we retreat!"
Li Chunbo took a deep breath, tears streaming down his smoke-stained face as he whispered, "Understood!"
The group ran silently, quickly approaching Third Avenue, which should have been bustling with activity but was surprisingly deserted. Even sandbags and barbed wire were scarce.
Indeed, most of the nearby forces were concentrated on defending Jingmen Avenue, leading to a significant reduction in defenses along this road. The two-kilometer stretch they traversed only had two barricades.
As Li Chunbo and his team moved forward, the sound of gunfire intensified to their right, clearly indicating one thing: the enemy's advance was faster than theirs!
If this continued, it would be disastrous. If the enemy reached Nanhai Road before them, the emergency evacuation point there would be compromised. They would then have to escort civilians to a much farther evacuation point, making their task even more difficult.
"This won't do! The pressure on the front line is too great; we need to conduct a flanking maneuver!" Big Dog exclaimed, drenched in sweat as he looked at the red zones on the tactical tablet. "The New City East Road has been breached; the enemy is advancing toward Xincheng West Road. They're closing in on us!"
Lion Brother slowly came to a halt and turned to Tiger and Li Chunbo. "You two escort them to the evacuation point. Swap your guns with me."
"Then you." Li Chunbo instinctively reached out his hand, wanting to grab the old Sergeant Major in front of him.
Lion Brother quickly opened Li Chunbo's outstretched hand and handed over his sniper rifle, shouting, "Execute the order!"
Li Chunbo was taken aback for a moment, his eyes stinging as he shouted back, "Understood!" He took the sniper rifle and the ammunition belt, passing over his own rifle and ammunition belt while watching Lion Brother and the big dog turn right and sprint towards Jingmen Avenue, four hundred meters away.
Li Chunbo turned around, carrying the girl on his back as he escorted the Young Couple towards the Evacuation Point located on Nanhai Road. All the while, tears streamed down Li Chunbo's face without stopping.
Before long, Li Chunbo and Tiger successfully delivered the four of them to the Evacuation Point: Hanting Hotel. The helicopter was parked on the rooftop of Hanting Hotel. After helping them board the helicopter and securing their seatbelts, they saluted the pilot.
The pilot looked surprised and said, "You can come up too; this is your best chance to evacuate the battlefield."
Li Chunbo smiled lightly and shook his head. "My brothers are not out yet!"
The pilot exhaled and nodded slightly, increasing the power as the helicopter took off, flying westward.
Li Chunbo chambered a round in his sniper rifle and ran alongside Tiger towards Jingmen Avenue...
