“Ding ding—ding—” The Light Traveler rushed back to The Other Shore, carrying the injured Yuki Chiba and Chen Rui. The Other Shore boasted a world-class medical team and advanced medical equipment. Although local hospitals could handle such injuries, the social implications and medical efficiency were far better if they returned directly to Aboard. Thus, Chen Rui decisively ordered the Light Traveler to swiftly head back to Miyanoura Port.
Along the way, instructors saluted the vehicle as it passed. Once they boarded, He Chengrong immediately ordered that the road be kept clear. Consequently, the instructors nearby hurriedly returned to the roadside to ensure a clear path.
This action from the instructors drew the attention of several reporters. Although they were unaware of the situation, the sheer number of instructors indicated that something significant was happening. Mobilizing so many instructors meant that at least someone from Aboard's Central Command Room was involved, and every command from such individuals was undoubtedly for a reason.
Inside the vehicle, He Chengrong and Chen Rui provided emergency treatment for Yuki Chiba's wounds. Fortunately, there were two emergency medical kits on the Azure Lotus. Chen Rui quickly disinfected Yuki Chiba's right arm with antiseptic spray, wiped away the blood with sanitary pads, and used hemostatic spray on both entry and exit wounds before wrapping her entire right arm in gauze.
He Chengrong initially assisted Chen Rui, but as Chen Rui worked faster, He Chengrong found it hard to keep up. Although he hadn’t handled such situations in years, as a military officer, he felt embarrassed that he couldn’t manage an emergency as well as a civilian.
After securing Yuki Chiba's seatbelt, Chen Rui picked up two disinfectant wipes to clean the blood off his hands and said calmly, “You don’t need to blame yourself. You are already a senior officer; it’s normal to be out of practice with these things. Even though I left the military five or six years ago, my time away is still much shorter than yours. Besides, I have all the emergency procedures in my mind, so you shouldn’t feel too guilty.”
“Oh.” He Chengrong replied with a bitter smile. He understood these facts but couldn’t shake off his embarrassment at not being as effective as Chen Rui in this emergency situation.
Chen Rui sat down on the sofa and glanced at He Chengrong, noticing his lingering gloom. He smiled and said, “Don’t dwell on it. I know this lady quite well and we have a good relationship; naturally, I’m anxious for her as a friend. If it were your friend, you would feel the same way. So there’s no need to feel upset.”
After hearing Chen Rui’s words, He Chengrong chuckled softly and looked closely at Yuki Chiba but was immediately struck speechless in shock. Pointing at Yuki Chiba lying on the sofa, he exclaimed, “She! She! Mr. Li!?”
Chen Rui shook his head and walked over to Yuki Chiba, brushing aside her bangs to confirm her identity before sighing.
“She is not Li Xue; her name is Yuki Chiba. She is of Japanese-American descent and the daughter of a wealthy businessman—a socialite with no fixed occupation who enjoys writing…”
Realizing he had said too much, Chen Rui coughed twice and returned to his seat on the sofa.
“Captain Chen seems quite familiar with her? But saying that might be a bit unfair to Mr. Li!” He Chengrong laughed heartily.
Given Chen Zijing’s prominence within the military and Dawn Group’s influence worldwide, their relationship had long been a topic of interest among high-ranking officials in both military and business circles.
With Chen Zijing or Chen Rui ‘revived’ and back in public view, their non-romantic friendship had become fodder for gossip among many people. Thus, it was no surprise that He Chengrong mentioned Li Xue.
Chen Rui forced a smile and sighed sadly.
"I'm just friends with her, and besides, the paths we are taking are different, so let's not talk about this anymore."
He Chengrong looked at Chen Rui in surprise. He didn't understand what Chen Rui meant by "paths," but upon seeing the hidden sorrow in Chen Rui's eyes, he suddenly realized.
"Are you afraid of getting her involved in this?" He Chengrong asked, puzzled. "No matter what, this is for the sake of the people of the world; it can't possibly be a bad thing."
Chen Rui nodded and looked at He Chengrong seriously.
"Yes, what I'm doing isn't a bad thing, but we are concealing the consequences that technological advancement may bring. Think about it: if this matter were to be exposed, what would society look like?"
He Chengrong pondered for a moment and incredulously asked, "Divided into... two factions?"
"Exactly. Moreover, most people would side with abandoning technological development. After all, for them, whether technology progresses or not isn't that important. But the minority who oppose this are often those in positions of power. So, what do you think would happen?"
Chen Rui glanced at He Chengrong with a hint of amusement; this former People's Liberation Army general would surely be able to predict what might occur.
He Chengrong could not only foresee the consequences that would arise but also understand why countries were reluctant to abandon technological research. From a military perspective, advancements in technology could completely disrupt the balance of war.
Imagine if all countries in the world announced they would abandon all technological projects, yet one country continued its research and developed a new type of super weapon. On another societal level, technological advancement raises the overall living standards of residents. Abandoning technological research would only cause a country's economic strength to stagnate or even regress, which is something no nation wants to see.
Thus, all those in the know were bound by invisible ropes on this solitary ship. This ship was navigating toward humanity's future but would be despised by all humanity. Such pressure is not something an ordinary person can bear.
"Is that so? So, I've already been tied to your ship of thieves?!" He Chengrong asked with a wry smile, but there was no hint of reluctance or blame in his tone. He understood that everyone aware of this situation had to bear such a significant mission.
Even if Chen Rui didn't tell him the truth, when the organization informed him, he would still comply unconditionally. Even if this matter would be met with disdain from everyone, he would have no regrets because it was his responsibility.
A responsibility for the future of humanity.
"But have you considered that even if she is unaware, due to her position, once the truth is revealed, she will still belong to our side?"
Chen Rui remained silent, simply watching He Chengrong quietly.
"That's true; you certainly know. However, no one can predict when an accident might occur, or whether a solution will be found before something goes wrong." He Chengrong smiled at Chen Rui. "So, you don't want her to bear such a heavy responsibility; you don't want her to know the cruel truth behind this world."
He Chengrong shook his head, forcing a smile as he patted Chen Rui's shoulder. "You're right; there's no need to involve innocent people. Let's leave these thankless tasks to us men!"
"Ding ding ding—" The internal communication phone in the vehicle rang. The driver's cabin and passenger compartment were completely separated, so the driver had to use this phone to communicate with Chen Rui.
"Hello!"
"Mr. Chen! There are many reporters ahead! Should we continue driving through?" The driver asked calmly.
"Keep going, but slow down a bit. I'll contact you shortly!" Chen Rui immediately hung up the phone and turned to He Chengrong. "Has the Medical Team Onboard come out? Why are there so many reporters?"
"I'll check!" He Chengrong realized the issue and quickly used the phone to communicate with the Medical Team Onboard.
After hanging up, He Chengrong shook his head helplessly. "No, they didn't come out when they reached the gangway because there were already many reporters outside. They chose not to come out due to potential impact. The reporters outside were likely attracted by the instructors along the way."
Chen Rui frowned and looked at the situation ahead through the vehicle's TV. He picked up the onboard phone and told the driver, "Drive a little further ahead and stop where there are most instructors. After I get out, continue moving slowly forward until you reach the gangway!"
“Understood!”
Chen Rui turned to He Chengrong and said, “I’ll go down to attract their attention. You take the opportunity to get her aboard!”
“No! I’ll attract their attention!” He Chengrong knew this was to protect the reputation of the Dream World project, so he wanted to help Chen Rui share this somewhat embarrassing task.
Chen Rui immediately rejected He Chengrong’s request.
“No way! Although you’re the second officer, you used to be a military officer, not a public figure. While your rank is high, your visibility isn’t enough to guarantee you’ll capture those reporters’ attention. I’m different…”
He Chengrong looked at Chen Rui, realizing he had made up his mind. After a sigh, he stopped arguing.
Moments later, the car came to a halt, and the door swung open. Chen Rui quickly got out and walked briskly toward Yakushima Seaside Hotel, with nearby instructors swiftly following him to protect him.
As soon as the reporters spotted Chen Rui, they surged forward like a swarm, microphones nearly brushing against his nose.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this is official business and I cannot disclose anything. Please make way!” Chen Rui said calmly.
The instructors pushed aside the reporters to create a passage, allowing Chen Rui to enter the seaside hotel while the reporters were kept outside.
Chen Rui hurried into the elevator, going straight to the top floor. Upon reaching the stage, he saw a group of people carrying a stretcher with Yuki Chiba being brought aboard The Other Shore. He let out a slow breath.
