Chapter 159 Zhuque Chenjing
Flying Wolf's thoughts remained chaotic; he believed that someone like him would not be troubled by emotions.
"Am I jealous of Ji Zichen?" Flying Wolf asked himself.
Regardless, he would not resort to extreme actions to win this love. Flying Wolf had already dismissed the idea of giving Ji Zichen to Arbitrator, as that might result in losing Ji Zichen, a person of great combat potential. He was surprised at how much he valued Ji Zichen.
"I haven't let jealousy cloud my judgment," Flying Wolf thought, finding some solace in this notion. "I'm not a petty person," he reminded himself, and this line of thinking eased some of the bitterness in his heart.
Deep down, Flying Wolf still believed he could change Xia Lian's perspective. He held onto a glimmer of hope that one day Xia Lian would realize he was far superior to Ji Zichen.
A heavy fog enveloped the village, darkening his previously uplifted mood. As he made his way to Stone House, where Yang Guizhi awaited him, he noticed that she seemed quite cheerful inside.
However, Flying Wolf knew that Yang Guizhi was likely not happy about the preparations for the Defensive Works. The simultaneous appearance of the Gravel Demon God had indeed caused concern at first, but now they had developed countermeasures. Yet, he felt these were not the reasons for her bright demeanor; her eyes sparkled as she looked at him.
Flying Wolf couldn't help but wonder, "Could it be because of Ji Zichen? Has Ji Zichen won over the Prince?"
He slightly bowed before Yang Guizhi, lowering his head and saying, "Chief..."
Yang Guizhi nodded and said, "I called you here to inform you that tonight you should prepare to accompany me to Qingyang City."
"So it really is that Ji Zichen has won over Prince Huixin," Flying Wolf exclaimed in surprise. "I didn't expect Ji Zichen to be able to impress the Prince."
Prince Huixin had long intended to meet with them, wanting both Ji Zichen and Wei Ye to accompany him, seeing Ji Zichen as a spirited individual who would understand his intentions.
"Qingyang City has already sent word," said Yang Guizhi. "I don't know how he managed to win over the Prince, but it's a good thing. We must suppress the threat from Arbitrator. Instead of waiting for them to invade the Opening of the Zhou Wasteland, we should resolve this conflict in the Desolate Central Plain."
Of course, Flying Wolf understood the importance of this matter. "I'll go select some agile individuals to join us right away," he replied.
As he turned to leave, Yang Guizhi had more to say. "Flying Wolf, there's another reason I called you here regarding you and Xia Lian..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Flying Wolf scoffed coldly, "Is it about how Xi Zu came to report?"
"Yang Guizhi" replied, "I don't need him to tell me about this. You think others are blind? Your interactions with Xia Lian on the street haven't gone unnoticed. This trip to Qingyang City is crucial; when you see Ji Zichen, I hope you can..."
"Flying Wolf" immediately interrupted "Yang Guizhi," stating seriously, "Chief, I know the importance of my duties."
"You saying that puts me at ease," "Yang Guizhi" replied. Concerned that "Flying Wolf" might harbor some resentment, "Yang Guizhi" continued, "You must understand that I'm not trying to teach you how to do your job; I'm just..."
"I understand," "Flying Wolf" said.
"Flying Wolf" bowed and withdrew, thinking to himself, " Ji Zichen is truly capable; she managed to win over Prince Huixin." Initially, "Flying Wolf" thought Ji Zichen would return empty-handed, allowing Xia Lian to witness her embarrassment, but now Ji Zichen had succeeded.
However, this also ignited "Flying Wolf's" competitive spirit; having such a rival was beneficial for him.
---
"Lin Chuyu" anxiously awaited Ji Zichen's return in her room. After a short while, a soldier came to report that Ji Zichen had gone off on military duties with Wei Ye, which certainly caught Lin Chuyu by surprise.
Lin Chuyu couldn't help but feel resentful about Ji Zichen's actions. She wanted to leave, but despite the vastness of the place, she had no idea where to go. A person without memories had nowhere to belong. It was already late at night, and feeling frustrated, Lin Chuyu knew she couldn't just wander outside. She sat idly in her room until eventually, she laid her head on the table and fell asleep.
"Are you there? Are you still with me?" a melodious voice called out. "If you're there, please respond."
In a daze, Lin Chuyu tried to open her eyes, but it felt so difficult. "Who... who is speaking?"
The delightful voice rejoiced at the response. "You finally answered me!" At that moment, Lin Chuyu felt as if she were waking from a deep slumber. Yet she wasn't annoyed by the voice disturbing her dreams; it was incredibly pleasant, reminiscent of flowing water.
Suddenly, Lin Chuyu jolted awake! She drifted back into sleep and once again experienced the sensation of soaring through the air as if she were inhabiting a phoenix.
What kind of person or thing was casting this curse upon her? Why did she end up here every time she fell asleep? This time there was no intrusion from Ji Zichen; the feeling of being present was even more vivid.
Lin Chuyu found herself sitting on Li Tang's back as he soared through the sky. Below her were the Stone Peaks she had seen before. Upon witnessing this scene, Lin Chuyu felt a wave of panic wash over her. "How... how did I get back here again?"
Li Tang looked puzzled at Lin Chuyu's words. "Back here? What do you mean?"
Without thinking much, Lin Chuyu replied, "This is my dream."
Li Tang landed atop one of the stone peaks and transformed into human form. Lin Chuyu plopped down onto the ground. In human form, Li Tang appeared even more beautiful and smiled as he asked, "Who are you? This is your dream? How is that possible?"
Lin Chuyu was certain this was her dream. She murmured to herself, "Of course, this is my dream. Well, if I'm dreaming, then I might as well keep sleeping. I don't want to go outside until all those Gravel Demon God matters are resolved."
Li Tang was quite curious about Lin Chuyu. "What is this Gravel Demon God? You're not from around here. How did you end up here?"
Lin Chuyu suddenly remembered something and panicked. She looked for a way down from the peak but realized that she was on a sheer cliff with no way to escape. "You have to take me down quickly! If they find me here, I'm doomed!" she exclaimed urgently.
Li Tang smiled lightly. "Ah, it's about that incident last time. Don't worry; they won't come here."
To the left of the peak, there was a grove of trees. Li Tang gestured for Lin Chuyu to follow her. Inside the grove stood a spacious house made of many branches, vines, and other materials bound together with mud.
The roof was triangular, and the house was surrounded by a fence. Inside the fence, a group of chickens pecked at the ground. Seeing this scene, Lin Chuyu felt confused. "Have I gone outside again?"
Li Tang waved for Lin Chuyu to come inside with her. With nowhere else to go, Lin Chuyu followed Li Tang into the house. The bed inside was woven from intertwined vines and covered with finely crafted new leaves that looked incredibly soft. A table made from a tree stump held a bowl carved from fruit shells filled with water.
Li Tang invited Lin Chuyu to sit down and encouraged her to drink from the bowl.
Lin Chuyu licked her lips, realizing she was thirsty, and drank all the water in one gulp. From the outside, the house appeared ordinary, but Lin Chuyu noticed a long corridor on the left side of the main hall that seemed to stretch into the unknown.
Seeing Lin Chuyu gazing curiously at the corridor, Li Tang spoke before she could ask anything. "That corridor leads to a very distant place."
Lin Chuyu asked, "What’s in that distant place?"
Li Tang smiled sweetly. "In that distant place, there’s a larger house. Outside that big house is a Mountain Valley filled with many daisies and colorful flowers."
"And many birds too?" Lin Chuyu inquired.
At that moment, she felt as if her hearing had intensified; she could hear birds chirping from down the corridor but couldn't identify what kind they were.
Li Tang was surprised. "You can hear the birds coming from the corridor?"
Lin Chuyu had no idea why Li Tang reacted that way. "Yes, I can hear them clearly. Can't you?"
Li Tang frowned, seemingly lost in thought for a moment before asking, "Do you want to go in and take a look?"
Lin Chuyu was drawn by the sound of birds and got up to follow Li Tang. The corridor seemed unexpectedly long. Standing at the entrance, Lin Chuyu looked ahead; the corridor stretched at least half a mile. Li Tang led the way, and Lin Chuyu, driven by curiosity, followed closely behind. As they approached the other end of the corridor, the bird calls grew louder.
Indeed, there was a large house here, but its furnishings were identical to those in the previous room. Stepping outside, they found themselves in a deep valley where flowers bloomed in vibrant colors, competing for beauty. Dense greenery flourished all around, and butterflies danced among the blossoms while birds chirped from the treetops.
The trees here were exceptionally massive; their branches were sturdy enough for someone to lie back and stretch out without fear of falling.
Lin Chuyu was astonished; this place was even more beautiful than a painted landscape, leaving her in awe.
In the distance, pathways formed naturally among the trees, crisscrossing in every direction. At that moment, Lin Chuyu began to doubt her own words.
"Is this really my dream?" she wondered. She had never seen such a spectacle before; how could she have depicted it in her dreams?
The trees were robust, each trunk sturdier than a wall. When the mountain breeze rustled the leaves, the treetops swayed like waves.
Lin Chuyu couldn't help but exclaim, "What is this place?"
Li Tang pointed towards the tree-lined path and replied, "This is the Vermilion Bird Corridor. If you follow this path, you'll reach Vermilion Bird Lake. There's a Vermilion Bird Bridge by the lake, and at the end of that bridge is Vermilion Bird Pavilion. The Sparse Pavilion is where the Vermilion Bird cultivates."
Lin Chuyu felt an inexplicable sense of doubt and asked, "Why did you bring me here?"
Li Tang responded, "This is Zhuque Chenjing. If you are not from the Vermilion Bird Clan, you wouldn't be able to come here at all. Tell me, are you a Vermilion Bird?"
