Upon entering the Greenery Pavilion, the environment was indeed luxurious. Shi Wannian had been here before, so he felt quite at home. After finding a seat, the waiter brought over the menu, and Zhao Wenjing and the others quickly opened it.
Even a simple vegetable dish cost hundreds, while better options were in the thousands, and the portions were small.
"Just order whatever," Shi Wannian said casually, exuding an air of wealth.
"Senior Shi, let me cover the bill tonight. I invited Jiang Chen and Wenjing to dinner, so it wouldn't be appropriate for you to pay," Ye Ming said after thinking for a while.
Zhao Wenjing knew that Ye Ming was capable of footing the bill as well, so she remained silent.
"Ye Ming, a meal tonight could easily cost tens of thousands. You just arrived in Shanghai; how can I let you pay?" Shi Wannian laughed, trying to intimidate Ye Ming.
"Don't worry; I can afford a meal that costs tens of thousands," Ye Ming replied with a smile.
Shi Wannian frowned; he sensed that Ye Ming seemed uninterested in him, which displeased his overconfident self. In his eyes, he was a local with a million-dollar salary and good looks; Ye Ming was just an ordinary girl who should feel lucky to have his attention. He never considered that she might not be interested in him at all.
"Since Senior Shi has already offered to treat us, Ye Ming, you should stop insisting. Senior Shi isn't short on money," Zhao Wenjing advised when she noticed the awkward atmosphere.
"That's not right; if I said I'm treating, then I'm treating!" Ye Ming insisted.
Seeing that Ye Ming was adamant about paying, Shi Wannian chose not to speak further. He had other plans in mind—he would order more dishes and if the total exceeded a hundred thousand, Ye Ming would surely struggle to pay, and he would have to step in.
As Shi Wannian pondered this, Jiang Chen, who had been relatively quiet until now, spoke up.
"I invited you to Shanghai; how could I let you pay? Tonight, I’ll cover the bill. Next time, you can treat me," Jiang Chen said with a smile.
"That won't do; I called you to Shanghai; how can I let you spend money?" Ye Ming replied.
"It doesn't matter; it's settled then. I'll pay for tonight's meal, and you can treat me next time," Jiang Chen insisted firmly with a slight smile.
Ye Ming still wanted to refuse, but Shi Wannian interjected with a knowing smile: "Since this handsome guy wants to show off in front of the beautiful ladies, we should give him that opportunity. Let him treat us."
Shi Wannian had been looking for a way to embarrass Jiang Chen and was pleased that Jiang Chen had walked right into it. In Shi Wannian's view, Jiang Chen was blissfully unaware of the restaurant's prices. If they ended up spending over a hundred thousand, he couldn't wait to see how Jiang Chen would handle it when it came time to pay.
A cold smirk appeared on Shi Wannian's lips as he envisioned Jiang Chen's awkwardness at the bill payment.
Zhao Wenjing and Sun Weiwu exchanged surprised glances; they hadn't expected Jiang Chen to speak up at this moment.
Ye Ming looked at Jiang Chen and nodded under his steady gaze. She would rather let Jiang Chen pay than allow Shi Wannian to do so.
"Let's order some dishes then," Shi Wannian said with a smile as he picked up the menu and began making selections.
"There's no need to be so troublesome. Waiter, bring us one of everything on the menu," Jiang Chen said.
"Hey, Jiang Chen, do you know how expensive the dishes are here? Just take a look at the menu," Zhao Wenjing kindly reminded him. Although she had a bit of a vanity streak, her intentions were not bad; it was understandable for an ordinary person to have such thoughts.
