"Classmate, I... isn't our position a bit high?" Chen Fan said with a fearful expression. As for why he was scared, anyone standing in mid-air at ten thousand meters would feel the same...
"This height is just right. There's a cloud layer below us, so no matter how reckless you are, no one will see!" Kanda Nanami brushed her wind-blown hair aside. As someone who disliked trouble, she certainly didn't believe that being on the ground while Chen Fan unleashed his abilities would leave her unscathed.
Chen Fan wanted to argue that the cloud cover didn't matter.
There was something called infrared sensing—
And another thing called biological wave detectors—
Even without those, there were satellites capable of monitoring the Earth or space!
For instance, given their current situation, Chen Fan was certain that they were likely being displayed on some department's screen in America!
Ultra-high-definition video—no doubt about it!
Looking at Kanda Nanami's jeans, Chen Fan couldn't help but smirk. If that little girl were wearing a skirt, she would definitely be exposed right now!
Did she really think the cloud cover made them safe? Ha! The power of technology was precisely for this reason!
"What are you staring at me for? Are you really a lolicon?" Kanda Nanami felt uneasy under Chen Fan's strange gaze. No matter how she looked at him, it felt odd!
"I'm afraid of heights!" Chen Fan's lips twitched.
He wouldn't dare to speak carelessly here; his life was literally in someone else's hands!
"How boring! You're scared at this height? You're really embarrassing us time travelers!" Kanda Nanami scoffed, giving Chen Fan a look that said he should avoid her in the future if he wanted to save face!
"Wow!" Chen Fan exclaimed, clicking his tongue. If only he could fly or had a parachute, he would definitely give that little Loli a proper check-up. Unfortunately, all he could do was think about it.
"Quick, release the lightning from the Iron Lump and let’s see what happens! I’m in a hurry to get back for dinner!" The disdainful tone had turned into urgency, and Kanda Nanami's face showed signs of irritation.
"What do you mean by Iron Lump?" Chen Fan rolled his eyes. As his exclusive weapon, how could it not have a name? He smirked proudly. "I just named it Thunder Book! What do you think?"
"Not much! Thunder Book doesn’t even roll off the tongue as well as Iron Lump!" Kanda Nanami pouted.
Faced with Kanda Nanami's retort, Chen Fan's lips twitched. Why was this brat always opposing him?
He had initially held some interest in the weapon, but now that was completely gone.
With a helpless wave of his hand, like shooing away a fly, he activated the Iron Lump—uh, Thunder Book. Instantly, it burst forth with brilliant light, and a slender crystal shot out rapidly, piercing through the clouds and vanishing into the night.
The two were situated over an ocean, and Chen Fan wasn’t worried that the released lightning crystal would accidentally harm anyone!
"It seems fine; it still has some of its original functions. We should store more lightning in it for emergencies when we encounter danger!" Watching the disappearing lightning beam, Kanda Nanami nodded. Then, with a flash of light from the magic circle beneath her feet, they returned to a room inside S.H.I.E.L.D.
"I'm leaving. Contact me on my phone if there's an emergency!" After leaving that remark, Kanda Nanami vanished before Chen Fan’s eyes. Her ability to appear and disappear without a trace made him envious.
...
At the top floor of Stark Industries, Tony Stark stood on the highest platform.
"Sir, the external armor is ready. Please maintain your current stance; equipment will be fitted in three seconds!" The artificial intelligence known as J.A.R.V.I.S. spoke in a mechanical voice laced with an inexplicable hint of humanity.
“Alright! J.A.R.V.I.S.! I'm ready! Let's get started!” Tony took a deep breath, gazing at the shattered moon, his brow furrowing slightly.
After being isolated in Afghanistan for half a month, Tony returned to find that this familiar world had suddenly become so strange.
As Tony was lost in thought, the platform beneath him began to tremble slightly, and countless mechanical arms extended from it, methodically attaching pieces of armor of various colors onto his not-so-mighty frame.
“Self-check procedure initiated… Self-check complete…!”
“External armor fully equipped! System operating normally! Current energy at one hundred percent!”
“One Hundred Thirty-Second Experiment commencing, System control transferred to Tony Stark!”
“Sir! We can begin!”
After a series of announcements, Tony, now encased in the Iron Armor, took a long breath and declared, “Experiment start!”
“J.A.R.V.I.S., record the experimental data!”
The artificial intelligence known as J.A.R.V.I.S. responded, “Sir! Please rest assured!”
“Then let’s get started!” Tony clenched his fist, and the external armor mirrored his movements, the metallic hands opening and closing with a palpable tension rising within him. He shouted, “J.A.R.V.I.S.… let’s go for a ride!”
Fiery arcs erupted from multiple points on the Iron Armor, including its back and feet, creating a tearing airflow that propelled him upward with a thunderous roar.
The takeoff speed felt overwhelmingly intense; encased in the armor, Tony could only feel a tremendous thrust hitting him, causing him to grit his teeth and gasp for air. “J.A.R.V.I.S., remind me later to improve the shock absorption System!”
“Got it! Sir! Recording now!”
This wasn’t Tony’s first time flying like this. After adapting to the power of the new armor, he let out an excited hum and began to soar rapidly through the night sky. The thrill was far more intense than any street racing he had experienced!
Under the night sky, anyone who looked up would see a streak of light darting across the heavens. The speed was so great that capturing it on camera for sharing seemed impossible.
Showing off was instinctual for Tony. After weaving around a few skyscrapers, the rear of the Iron Armor ignited with even more intense flames.
“J.A.R.V.I.S., let’s head up to the clouds and enjoy the moonlight. That kind of broken desolation is a rare beauty!” Tony said, his tone filled with excitement. After the initial tests, aside from a few areas needing improvement, this flight had reached perfection.
“Of course, sir! As long as you’re happy!” the electronic voice responded slowly.
After a brief moment of charging, the Iron Armor shot upward in a brilliant arc nearly three meters long.
Just then, a purple lightning bolt suddenly streaked across above the clouds, heading straight for the ascending Tony. The thrust and inertia from his ascent left him no time to react to this unexpected scene.
“Damn it!” The curse barely escaped his lips when the incoming beam struck the airborne Iron Armor, instantly disrupting its flight path.
“Beep—beep—!”
“High-energy beam attack detected. External armor defense system activated!”
“Beep—beep—!”
“Beam energy reduced by 80%... External armor defense system compromised... Initiating emergency measures... Activating Plan Three...!”
A tremendous sense of weightlessness and dizziness enveloped Tony's nerves. The Iron Armor, struck by a beam, had most of its functions paralyzed and lost its ability to fly. Weighing over a hundred kilograms, the Iron Armor plummeted rapidly toward the ocean below under the force of gravity.
"J.A.R.V.I.S.... if you shut down completely, I'm going to be turned into mush!" Tony shouted instinctively, feeling a bit disoriented.
"Beep... Beep... System rebooting... Reboot complete... Flight system emergency activation!" The familiar electronic voice brought Tony immense reassurance; its sound signified that he had escaped danger.
The Iron Armor extended its dazzling arc flames once more, halting in mid-air when it was a thousand meters above the sea surface.
Having narrowly escaped disaster, Tony didn't care about any potential future benefits; he just wanted to vent his frustration. What on earth was happening?
Were there still beam weapons attacking him above the clouds?
Was the world changing too quickly? Or had he fallen behind society's pace?
"Beep! Beep! ... Sir! I recommend you return to base as soon as possible; currently, the external armor energy is at 5%... Beep..."
Amidst the interference and static, the artificial intelligence's voice echoed in Tony's ears.
"J.A.R.V.I.S., can you stop beeping? Did the recent attack cause a glitch in your programming?" Tony said with a headache after relinquishing control to J.A.R.V.I.S.'s super control.
"Sir! This is an alert sound you designed for when danger is detected!" J.A.R.V.I.S. replied.
Tony fell silent.
