In the northwest direction, amidst the sprawling forests, a road stretched endlessly, with a carriage slowly making its way along it.
Half an hour later, the road came to a complete halt, leading into a hilly area with uneven terrain. The occupants of the carriage had no choice but to disembark and continue on foot.
The group of four was clad in tight-fitting hunting attire, armed with longswords and bows, resembling young nobles venturing into the mountains for a hunt. They were the Xiar quartet.
After receiving their mission, they had rushed towards their objective, eager to complete it as quickly as possible.
This mission was not particularly dangerous; a cave lay about a kilometer off the trade route, inhabited by countless bats.
Initially, there had been no issues, but recently, merchants passing through had been attacked, and even several powerful warriors had been killed, which drew the attention of the Bounty Guild.
Their task was to ascertain the situation and eliminate any monsters if conditions allowed.
"Damn it, where did all these monsters come from? What are they feeding on?" Rody asked in confusion, casually slicing through a branch blocking their path with his sword.
"Indeed, those monsters are incredibly strong; they don't seem like ordinary beasts at all. They're even more terrifying than specially bred Totem Beasts!" Neil chimed in, still maintaining his noble demeanor despite wearing leather armor.
"Who knows? They might have suddenly awakened and turned into Totem Beasts themselves," Xiar shrugged and laughed.
He knew the real situation well but couldn't reveal it to them; otherwise, he wouldn't be able to explain how he knew.
Knowing the future felt strangely wonderful, giving him a sense of superiority as if he had transcended humanity and become something akin to a deity.
With knowledge of what was to come and awareness of these individuals' fates ahead, he felt no shame despite knowing his own strength was still lacking.
However, this sense of joy for Xiar was soon shattered.
Rody suddenly stopped in his tracks, gripping his sword tightly and scanning the surroundings with caution.
The other three hurried to catch up, having just passed through a thicket of bushes, only to be stunned by the horrifying sight before them.
"Ah!"
Kathy, the only girl in the group, was startled and immediately turned to throw herself into Rody's arms, her chest pressing tightly against his broad torso.
However, Rody had no time to enjoy such an embrace. With a fierce swing of his sword, he cleaved through a tree trunk as thick as a bowl beside him and shouted angrily, "Damn beasts! I will definitely kill them!"
Before them lay a gruesome scene on the ground, with several human corpses scattered about, all disemboweled and had their hearts ripped out.
It was clear that they had fallen victim to a monster's ambush, and that creature only feasted on the soft internal organs, leaving the rest of the bodies untouched.
Even more appalling was the sight of a corpse belonging to a child of about three or four years old. Xiar felt his stomach churn at the first glimpse of such brutality.
"Come out, Black!"
Rody gestured with both hands as gray Source Power swirled around him. In front of him quickly appeared a strange creature resembling a crocodile.
It was over a meter long, pitch black all over, with a row of upright bony spikes along its back. Its large mouth was filled with two rows of sharp, serrated teeth that looked incredibly menacing.
Yet Rody affectionately reached out to pat its head and commanded it to sniff out the scent of that vicious monster.
Xiar felt somewhat speechless; the future legendary beast was being treated like a dog by him—what a sight to behold.
But then again, no matter how extraordinary one's innate talent might be, until it matured, it remained just potential rather than true strength.
Rody, one of Fate's Seven, suddenly felt a surge of curiosity. What would happen if he eliminated the opponent right now?
He suppressed a flicker of impulse and silently followed behind. The four of them arrived at a dark cave, exchanging glances with one another.
The entrance had a diameter of over three meters, surrounded by creeping vines, and inside it was so dark that nothing could be clearly seen.
Neil summoned his pet, a flamboyantly colored bird that immediately let out a crisp call upon appearing.
His sister Kathy summoned a magnificent butterfly that emitted a faint purple glow; it was the same Purple-Winged Butterfly Xiar had seen earlier.
"Let Black go first; you all follow behind. Its thick skin makes it resistant to sudden ambushes," Rody said, his expression serious. He sensed from a slight agitation in the Totem Beast that the creature was not as weak as he had imagined.
The three nodded in agreement, and the group stepped into the cave, where a foul stench hit them like a wave.
The smell was akin to that of a massive cesspit, overwhelming them to the point where they could barely breathe. Each of them hurriedly covered their noses with their sleeves.
Suddenly!
Just a few steps in, a flurry of wing beats erupted. They looked up and, aided by a dim light, their hearts tightened.
Above them were countless bats startled by their arrival, their eyes glowing faintly red as they filled the space overhead.
"Damn, there are so many bats!" Rody couldn't help but exclaim.
Now, the previously quiet bats were completely startled and began to flutter down towards them.
However, instead of attacking, they densely occupied all available space, nearly surrounding them in a massive sphere.
"Don't move! If we stay still, they won't notice us!" Neil said urgently.
The four of them fell silent, transforming into four statues. The bats flew past them and then hung back on the cave walls.
It was still daytime; they only ventured out at night to hunt, so they wouldn't be easily disturbed.
They breathed a sigh of relief and quietly made their way through the area occupied by the bats. Xiar could clearly feel that they were descending deeper, raising his suspicion that they might reach an underground river.
After about ten minutes, the dense swarm of bats above them was replaced by a strange moss that emitted a faint glow, illuminating the cave and making it less dark.
Even more bizarrely, thick vines grew ahead, blocking their path like a dense green wall.
Rody charged forward without hesitation, swinging his sword to cut through the vine-like arms.
His strength and endurance were astonishing, leaving Xiar in awe as he watched Rody clear the way while he took a defensive stance, ready to fend off any potential enemies.
After a while, they realized that what seemed like a thick wall of vines was actually quite narrow. Rody had forcefully carved a gap through it.
A beam of light spilled out from the opening, revealing a scene inside that left all four of them stunned—
Inside was an enormous underground space filled with towering trees!
