Chapter 19: Mini Terminator
Jiang He and Song Yao excitedly drove back the lost little car, only to discover that the Pickup loaded with supplies was gone.
“Where’s the car?” Jiang He was dumbfounded. How could it just disappear after being away for such a short time?
“Don’t even mention it, this is so damn frustrating!” Chao Yifan punched the air in anger, then started loading the food and water from the ground into the SUV and the newly returned Little Panda. Little Golden Noodles looked apologetic, helping Chao Yifan organize the items with a downcast demeanor.
An Zheng shrugged and recounted what had just happened to the two of them.
“Guns? A robbery?” Jiang He ’s eyes widened in disbelief, unable to accept that their own people had been robbed in just a few minutes.
“The other side had guns and a grudge against you. There’s nothing we can do. The world has changed; it’s all about who has the bigger fist now,” An Zheng said with a wry smile, turning back to the car. The little boy rubbed his sleepy eyes, clearly unaware of what had just transpired.
“So we were just robbed like that?” Jiang He grimaced, looking at Song Yao as if he had just eaten something foul.
The short-haired beauty stomped her foot in frustration and said, “What else can we do? Do you have a better plan?”
“Damn it, they’re like bandits!” Jiang He irritably scratched his head, pacing back and forth in a daze.
“Alright, stop being angry for now. At least that bastard didn’t hurt them,” Song Yao said. Although she was also upset, An Zheng was right; those with guns were in charge. If they had been driving an armored vehicle instead of an ambulance, even if Zhou Huai had been given a set of gutsy armor, he wouldn’t have dared to show his teeth.
After helping the two tidy up the scattered items on the ground, Jiang He looked dejected and said, “I’m not mad about this; it’s just that guy robbed us of most of our food with just one gun. What if we run into someone armed again in the future? Wouldn’t they just take you away to be their wife?”
“Puh!” Song Yao shot him a glare and replied, “Can you be serious for once?”
“I’m serious! Our team has half women and two and a half men. How can we fight against people with guns when we’re all armed with cold weapons?” Jiang He sat on the hood of Little Panda, pulling out a cigarette and lighting one for himself.
Little Gold didn’t smoke and leaned against the SUV with crossed arms. The three of them lit their cigarettes one by one and exhaled three puffs of blue smoke simultaneously.
"The ocean says that while we are busy figuring out how to defend against Zombies, we've overlooked the living," Chao Tianwang said, his anger causing him to choke on his smoke, nearly coughing out his eyeballs.
Seeing the seriousness in their conversation, Song Yao lowered her head in thought for a moment, her short hair falling to cover part of her cheek. Recently, Song Yao had been increasingly fierce, but it was only during quiet moments that she would unconsciously show her softer side.
"How about we get some guns?" Song Yao suggested weakly.
Jiang He rolled his eyes and tossed them some mothballs. "If getting a knife is such a hassle, where do you think we can get guns? Besides, even if we had guns, we wouldn't know how to use them. It's not like you can just pick one up and hit your target from a hundred paces."
Chao Yifan remained silent, quietly taking out the few bottles of alcohol from the car and wordlessly starting to DIY a Molotov Cocktail.
"That thing is useless in daylight; it definitely won't be faster than a bullet," Jiang He continued to pour cold water on their plans.
"I'm not comparing it to a gun," Chao Yifan said without looking up, tearing an old bedsheet used for wrapping bedding and growling, "Next time we're robbed, I swear I'll—!"
"Hey, guys, this isn't the right place for a meeting. If we keep wasting time, it will be dark soon," An Zheng urged the four young people who looked deflated.
Little Gold, who had been silent all along, squinted and pointed towards the back of the convoy. "Look over there!"
The others turned to look, their expressions growing even grimmer. Chao Yifan grabbed the binoculars hanging around his neck and cursed, "Let's retreat; it's Zombie tea time."
In the distance, a horde of Zombies had gathered again. Although they were far away, the mass of bodies was quite conspicuous. The stretch of road near the highway offered a clear view; while the Zombies likely couldn't see them here, the sheer number of them still radiated enough danger signals.
"Wait!"
Chao Yifan suddenly exclaimed while holding the binoculars.
"What is it? Did you see a Pickup parked there again?" Jiang He teased.
“Not just a Pickup, it's way cooler than a Pickup.” Chao Yifan turned his head and stared blankly at the three, saying, “Just look for yourselves, a real man.”
The three pairs of eyes were filled with curiosity, but unfortunately, there was only one telescope. Song Yao leaned in to look through the lens and let out a strange cry, just like Chao Yifan.
Jiang He and Little Gold exchanged glances and eagerly snatched the telescope. They saw a man riding a Yamaha motorcycle at breakneck speed in front of a horde of zombies. Although there were many zombies, they moved slowly. Through the telescope, it looked as if this man was leading the zombie army toward them.
“Damn, that's so cool!” Jiang He's eyes were glued to the telescope while Little Gold jumped around anxiously trying to get a better view.
The biker quickly approached the highway, and even without the telescope, they could see the man's clothes flapping wildly in the wind.
The four of them were mesmerized as the biker pulled further away from the zombies, charging straight toward the ETC lane. In less than a hundred meters, the roar of the motorcycle became distinctly audible.
“What is he doing?” Chao Yifan wondered aloud.
The biker seemed to have noticed them as well; he slowed down, gripping the handlebars with one hand while reaching behind him with his right hand to pull out a long black object… aiming it directly at the stunned group.
“Is that a gun?” Jiang He squinted and then remembered he still had the telescope in his hands, quickly bringing it back up to his eyes.
“Shit! Get down!” Jiang He shouted, leaping forward to tackle Song Yao, who was peering closely ahead. Chao Tianwang reacted swiftly too, grabbing Little Gold by the shoulder and pulling him down to the ground.
Almost simultaneously, a sharp sound sliced through the air. A chilling breeze whizzed past where they had just been standing, followed by a sharp 'ding' as an object embedded itself into the ambulance. The four turned in shock to see a slender metal arrow stuck in the ambulance, its tail still quivering.
Before they could get back on their feet, the biker executed a stylish drift and came to a smooth stop right in front of them.
“Living people? My bad; I thought you were Living Dead,” the biker said with a grin as he reinserted the dark metal weapon into his back and waved cheerfully at the dazed group.
Jiang He stood up stiffly, glancing at the arrow lodged in the ambulance and then at the smiling man. Fear and anger finally erupted as he jumped up and shouted, “Are you an idiot?! You just shot without knowing! Did you see that? The damn car is shot through!”
"I'm sorry, I thought you guys were just standing there doing nothing from a distance..."
"What the hell! Just saying sorry doesn't cut it! Damn it, if I hadn't dodged quickly, I'd be meeting Marx right now!"
Jiang He was fuming, grinding his teeth in frustration. If it weren't for Song Yao holding him back, he might have lunged at the guy.
When it came to short tempers, Jiang He and Chao Yifan were cut from the same cloth. Despite their usual playful banter, once their blood boiled, they would charge into a fight without hesitation.
Biker shrugged, putting on an expression that said, "I didn't mean to."
"Wait, you're Little Li Dart's buddy..." Chao Yifan wasn't too angry; he was captivated by Biker's impressive shot.
"The Living Dead are coming after us. Aren't you guys leaving?" Biker had no intention of arguing with them and adjusted his posture, ready to take off.
"Let's go first; we can settle this later," Song Yao glanced toward the main road where a dark horde of zombies was slowly closing in. If they didn't leave now, it would be too late.
Ignoring their surprise and anger, everyone hopped into their vehicles and sped out of the toll booth. Jiang He saw in the rearview mirror that Biker rode his Yamaha past the ambulance while pulling out the long arrow deeply embedded in its body.
The four cars rushed out of the toll station like they were fleeing, leaving behind long trails of exhaust as they headed north. Biker skillfully maneuvered between the vehicles, changing lanes and overtaking. Fortunately, the road wasn't too congested, allowing him to stay ahead without much trouble. Jiang He glanced at the ancient city he had lived in for years, feeling a mix of emotions as the wind rushed past and Biker's loud shouts filled the air. The sun quietly slipped behind the clouds, casting long shadows from the four vehicles.
There weren't many abandoned cars on this stretch of road, making it passable. After driving for twenty minutes in silence, they finally stopped at a highway service area. Everyone got out to stretch their legs. Chao Yifan excitedly approached them with good news: the navigation system in Little Panda was operational. Jiang He and Song Yao weren't particularly surprised by his discovery; both of them...
