Chapter 21: Discovery at the Gas Station
"What!!!???" Jiang He exclaimed in shock.
Ming Junwei shrugged and said helplessly, "That's right, the unit responsible for the leaked reagent is our company. But there's no need to be angry; I'm not in the research department. I work in the office."
Jiang He was momentarily confused about the distinction between the two roles, staring blankly at Ming Junwei as he continued his work.
Ming Junwei deftly turned over the bodies, discovering that all of them had been shot and showed no signs of being bitten by zombies.
"Stop dawdling and help me out," Ming Junwei pointed to the body at the bottom.
"Huh? Why?"
"Pull him out; he should be the driver."
"The driver of what?"
"The coach parked outside."
Jiang He looked dazed, mumbling, "How do you know that?"
Ming Junwei sighed and replied, "The ticket has the coach number on it. We saw that vehicle outside just now. Don't you remember?"
"I... I didn't pay attention to the license plate... But how do you know he's the driver?" Jiang He felt a bit embarrassed and quickly helped Ming Junwei pull out the body.
Ming Junwei didn't explain further; he simply pointed to the nylon gloves on the corpse's hands.
The body was severely decomposed, and since it was at the bottom, they pulled too hard, accidentally tearing off an arm. Jiang He couldn't hold it together and turned away to vomit.
"You should go outside. I'm not disgusted by the body, but you've made me feel a bit queasy," Ming Junwei said, covering his mouth and nose with his sleeve as he began to search the pockets of the corpse. Sure enough, he found the car keys tucked in the lower back of the body.
Jiang He ran next door to rinse his mouth and saw Song Yao leading a little girl out.
“Hmm?” Jiang He made a questioning expression.
“I'll take her out first. Did you two find anything?” Song Yao's eyes were slightly red and swollen. The little girl silently clutched Song Yao's hand, occasionally glancing back at her father's corpse.
“Sort of. We'll talk about it in a bit.”
Song Yao led the little girl outside, and Ming Junwei also came out from the adjacent room.
“Have you finished checking?” Jiang He asked.
“Yeah, found some things.” Ming Junwei's expression was not good as he raised what he had in his hand.
Jiang He glanced over and saw a car key and a digital camera. “Is there anything on it?”
“Yeah, it ran out of battery as soon as I turned it on. Let's check it in the car; the luggage should be there.” Ming Junwei tossed the key to Jiang He and added, “These bodies need to be dealt with.”
“How should we handle them?” Jiang He roughly counted—there were over ten corpses piled together, most of them in a state of decay, easily dismembered with a little force.
“Burn them.”
As the two walked out of the reception area, the sky had already darkened significantly. Chao Yifan's telescope lacked night vision capabilities, so there was no need to show off on the roof of the car. The three women huddled around the little girl, their expressions not looking good; it seemed Song Yao had informed them about what was inside. Little Gold was still wiping her tears, while An Zheng was quite good at comforting children; at this moment, the little girl was no longer as frightened.
When they saw Jiang He and Ming Junwei come out holding something, they all displayed puzzled expressions.
“Well, why don’t you all go into the supermarket first? They have food and drinks inside. We’ll check on the situation at the gas station.” Jiang He looked at the sky and felt that being indoors would be safer.
An Zheng nodded, took a small backpack from the SUV, slinging it on his back while holding his son in one hand and the little girl in the other. Chao Yifan checked the three vehicles and pulled out a high-powered spotlight from her climbing bag. Song Yao initially wanted to follow along but seeing the little girl's anxious expression, she ultimately decided against it.
“Be careful,” Song Yao advised.
“Yeah, you too. Don’t leave the supermarket; just wait for us inside,” Jiang He instructed before he and Ming Junwei quickly ran toward the gas station side.
"Are you okay?" Jiang He had many questions he wanted to ask Ming Junwei, but at that moment, he noticed that Ming Junwei was frowning, as if he had seen something very serious.
"Let's check first. We need to confirm it's safe before going into the car. There's a video in the camera; you’ll probably react the same way I did—shh!" Ming Junwei suddenly stopped speaking and gestured for Jiang He to be quiet.
The two had just run outside the Gas Station's service area when Ming Junwei seemed to hear something. Jiang He leaned against the wall, straining to listen. Sure enough, there was a sound coming from inside, faint yet distinct, like someone dragging something along the ground.
They cautiously peeked out, twisting on their flashlights. The beam of light weakened as it passed through the glass, but they could still see seven or eight Zombies wandering around inside. While encountering Zombies wasn't unusual, these ones were different from those Jiang He had seen in the city. They were all dressed in camouflage uniforms and had tactical belts strapped around their waists. The one closest to the door had a strap wrapped around its arm, with the other end attached to a sleek black Submachine Gun. The sound they heard was from the gun dragging on the floor.
Both of them let out a suppressed gasp and were about to pull back their heads to discuss when they noticed that the Zombies inside seemed attracted by the flashlight's beam and were stumbling towards the door.
"Damn it, run!" Jiang He exclaimed in shock, turning to flee.
"What are you talking about?" Ming Junwei grabbed Jiang He with his hand axe.
"They're all armed!" Jiang He panicked.
"...Zombies can't shoot! Are you out of your mind?" Ming Junwei was taken aback by Jiang He's response.
"Huh? Uh..." Jiang He realized his mistake and felt his face flush with embarrassment.
Before either of them could say anything else, the Zombies had already slammed against the glass door. They had clearly spotted the two living humans hiding nearby and were frantically banging on the glass, the sound echoing harshly in the air.
