Chapter 024: The Vague Cause
When Jiang He opened his eyes, the sky was just beginning to lighten. He felt a deep ache in all his bones; although he had only swapped shifts with Chao Yifan for three hours, he was still overwhelmed by sleepiness. Aside from the two children, all the adults were awake, gathered in a circle discussing something. Upon seeing Jiang He wake up, they paused their conversation.
"Good morning," Jiang He said, rubbing his eyes. Song Yao handed him a bottle of soda, and he took it with a straw, sipping it eagerly.
"We're discussing something important," Song Yao said, making space for him.
"What is it?"
"Ming the Great Hero and Yi Fan just returned from the operations room with some items," Song Yao pointed to the corner where several firearms of varying lengths were laid out.
Jiang He was slightly surprised but quickly recalled where they came from. Having never touched a gun before, his gaze was drawn to them.
"Don't get too excited; there’s enough for everyone to have one, but there aren’t many bullets. Also... only Ming the Great Hero knows how to use a gun," Chao Yifan boasted as he picked up a Rifle and struck a ridiculous pose like Rambo.
"The Type 81 automatic Rifle, military issue, with a thirty-round magazine capacity and an effective range of six hundred meters. It's quite old, but local forces still use it; its performance is relatively stable," Ming Junwei sat cross-legged nearby, explaining confidently. He pointed to the other handguns and continued, "The handguns are 54 Black Stars, favored by both military and gangs for their strong penetration power, but they only hold eight rounds."
Jiang He listened in astonishment, "Are you really just an office worker?"
"Office work varies in nature," Ming Junwei stretched lazily and said, "There aren’t many bullets; the three handguns are fully loaded, but the Type 81 is empty—we only found two magazines."
An Zheng was taking care of the two children nearby and looked up at this point, "Can you teach us to use guns in a short time?"
"I can teach you how to load and fire them without any problem. As for accuracy... that requires enough ammunition for practice, so I can't help much there. And I advise you not to get your hopes up too high; it's better to keep the guns for emergencies. China isn't like abroad; even if you were given a tank, you'd still need a way to get shells, right?" Ming Junwei's gloomy expression from last night had faded away, replaced by his usual playful demeanor.
Little Gold had boiled some water on a small alcohol stove and brought over instant noodles for everyone.
"We have plenty to eat and drink here; we can hold out for a while longer," the little girl said excitedly. She had found some travel-sized toiletries and had braved her fears early in the morning to brush her teeth and wash her face in the kitchen area, looking much more refreshed now.
"What else have you found?" Jiang He toyed with the cold .54 pistol, recalling the matter at hand.
"A map." Chao Yifan unfolded an A4 sheet of paper, which was marked with routes and points in pencil.
"Ming the Great Hero is indeed a hero; not only can he handle a gun, but he can also read a map. He mentioned that the points marked here indicate a Garrison contact nearby," Chao Yifan glanced at Ming Junwei, his tone laden with meaning.
Ming Junwei either didn't catch on or was too lazy to explain; he simply said, "Let me briefly share what I know. Although it may not be helpful, since I've teamed up with you, there's no point in hiding anything."
An Zheng also moved closer, looking at the few silent individuals and said, "If it's not helpful, what's the point of saying it?"
"Honesty is the best policy. I don't want you to misunderstand me, even though you don't pose any threat to me," Ming Junwei shrugged nonchalantly. "As you know, I am indeed an employee of the incident unit, but I'm not part of the frontline team; I'm just a peripheral personnel from a marginal organization."
"Wait, wait, wait." Jiang He interrupted. "Can you make it simpler?"
Ming Junwei sighed, organizing his thoughts before continuing, "What I mean is that this company is huge. The biopharmaceutical factory I work for is merely a subsidiary of a subsidiary; it doesn't even count as a company—it's just an experimental facility for a certain sector."
"What’s the name of your giant company? What is it?" Jiang He widened his eyes at Song Yao, who blinked but remained silent.
"I don't know," Ming Junwei shrugged.
"I'm sorry, I didn't catch that?" Jiang He asked in confusion.
Ming Junwei sighed again and held up two fingers. "The headquarters code name is RCA. I’m not sure what it means; I don’t have that level of clearance. The experimental facility I belong to is under 'Aimeili Cosmetics Company,' primarily producing and selling cosmetics. Yes, don’t look at me like that; it’s the kind of makeup you women use."
"'Aimeili'... Is your boss a mountain cannon?" Chao Yifan couldn't help but scoff.
Ming Junwei shot him a glare. "The name may be rustic, but the products aren’t cheap; they have a wide market overseas."
"Get to the point, I always use the best." Jiang He lifted the bowl and drank the noodle soup to the last drop, licking her lips as if still savoring it.
"The point is, the so-called reagent leak is just a cover. Our factory hasn't leaked any reagents," Ming Junwei said seriously. "You all understand what I'm saying, right?"
"I don't understand," the four young people replied in unison, shaking their heads together.
An Zheng pressed his lips together and asked, "Are you saying that the news is covering up the truth?"
Ming Junwei nodded, wearing a smug expression that seemed to say 'Only you understand me, An Zheng.' He continued, "Actually, you all haven't noticed one thing. The research and production of cosmetics is a chemical experiment, which is very different from biological pharmaceutical experiments. So our experimental site actually belongs to a cosmetics company but doesn't serve the cosmetics company."
Jiang He and Chao Yifan were both academically challenged and didn't quite grasp these biochemical concepts, so they said, "Make it simpler."
Ming Junwei rolled his eyes. "If I simplify it any more, there won't be anything left to say. At least try to engage your brains a little and keep up with the pace, okay?"
"We'll do our best." The two illiterates exchanged awkward glances and nodded repeatedly.
"I'm not here to introduce you to the company overview; I just want you to know that this company's structure is very complex and has immense power. Have you seen the movie 'Resident Evil'?" Ming Junwei asked.
"I have," the two illiterates answered eagerly.
"There’s an outrageous Umbrella Corporation in it that researches biological weapons with plans to destroy the world. However, RCA isn't that boring; it's a profit-driven organization involved in a wide range of fields, and it's all large-scale projects."
