Chapter Thirteen: Power Station (Part Two)
When dealing with Zombies, the weapons do not need to be particularly sophisticated.
Bai Yudong led two warriors back down the hillside, carrying tree trunks as thick as a person's arm. Using Chao Yifan's fruit knife, they sharpened each one, creating simple Wooden Spears to distribute among the group. The Wooden Spears varied in length and thickness but were quite sturdy. The thought of using these to stab a Zombie excited the eager young warriors.
Song Yao and Ming Junwei switched shifts, with him and Pan Luo waiting on the roadside with a young boy. Ming Junwei's injuries had not fully healed, making it somewhat difficult for him to engage in close combat.
For safety reasons, Bai Yudong teamed up with Jiang He, Song Yao, Chao Yifan, and two other warriors. They hurriedly approached the main entrance as dusk fell, checking their gear before splitting into two groups to enter through the large gate.
The main entrance of the Power Station featured a common retractable electric door, which for some unknown reason was only half-closed, leaving just enough space for a vehicle to pass through.
As Jiang He and his companions moved leftward, they immediately spotted the basketball court and the Little White Tower that Bai Yudong had mentioned. The basketball court was similar to those found in many corporate units; it had no surrounding netting and was slightly elevated above the road surface. Three or five Zombies were wandering around the court, all dressed similarly in blood-stained shirts, with their pants or skirts so dirty that their colors were unrecognizable.
Chao Yifan's group silently jumped onto the basketball court, quickly approaching the Zombies that had yet to turn around, efficiently skewering them like candied hawthorns.
Jiang He's group wasted no time either; under Bai Yudong's lead, they entered the Tree-Lined Path, brandishing their simple Wooden Spears as they charged forward.
The Tree-Lined Path was only about a hundred meters long, flanked by dense Green Belts and street trees. A fence was set up on the concrete platform, so they weren't worried about any Zombies lunging out from within.
Despite their light movements, the scent of living humans was always detected by Zombies first. The Zombies wandering along the Tree-Lined Path noticed their targets and staggered toward them with growls.
"Don't scatter," Bai Yudong urged as he tightened his grip on his Wooden Spear. He formed a triangular formation with his two companions. Before the leading Zombie could lunge at them, he stepped forward and thrust out his Wooden Spear.
The simple Wooden Spear was not as effective as iron weapons; without a blood groove on its sharpened tip, it got stuck after piercing into the Zombie's head. Fortunately, Bai Yudong was strong and muscular; he twisted the spear and pulled it back forcefully, creating a bloody hole in the Zombie's skull. He then kicked the corpse aside and accurately stabbed into the eye socket of a second Zombie.
Jiang He and Song Yao had been tense for quite some time; their hands gripping the Wooden Spears were already sweaty. Before they could thrust forward against several attacking Zombies, Bai Yudong's Wooden Spear had already struck first with a dull thud against flesh, followed by another corpse collapsing to the ground with a gaping hole in its head.
The two stood back-to-back, each able to hear the other's slightly anxious breaths. The triangular formation continued to move forward while dispatching Zombies along the way until they surprisingly made it through the Tree-Lined Path in no time.
Bai Yudong's Wooden Spear was smeared with blood at its tip while Jiang He and Song Yao’s Wooden Spears remained pristine and clean as if freshly sharpened.
Jiang He hesitated to rush out and play the hero, but listening to Bai Yudong's heavy breathing, it seemed that the constant thrusts were quite exhausting.
"Vice Commander, how about we switch? You take a break?" Jiang He tentatively asked.
"Sure." Bai Yudong replied without any hesitation, stepping back immediately.
Jiang He was surprised by Bai Yudong's prompt agreement, momentarily taken aback before quickly taking his place.
"You just focus on the front; don't worry about the sides," Bai Yudong paused, noticing the three others had caught up, and asked, "Is it clear?"
One soldier nodded and said, "We found a set of keys in the transmission room."
"Good." Bai Yudong nodded, pointing towards the entrance of the Tree-Lined Path. "You all take care of the right side." He then nudged Jiang He with his arm. "Let's go."
"Oh, okay." Jiang He steadied himself, positioning the Wooden Spear in front of his chest, slowing his pace as he stepped out of the Tree-Lined Path.
Suddenly, a Zombie lunged from the side. Before Jiang He could react, Bai Yudong swung his weapon and sent it flying eight yards away.
The Zombie got back up, blood-soaked and drooling a long string of saliva as it reached out again.
This time, Jiang He didn't falter. He thrust the Wooden Spear forward with ease, piercing through the Zombie's skull.
Jiang He licked his lips, feeling a surge of adrenaline.
At the end of the Tree-Lined Path stood a Three-Story White Building. The White Tower was flanked by dimly lit corridors, and the open space in front of the White Tower was eerily quiet; there were no unusual sights along either side of the corridor.
Two soldiers cautiously explored each side of the corridor. It was long, and their flashlight beams only illuminated about a hundred meters ahead; within that distance, aside from lamp posts and trash bins, there was nothing else.
This situation puzzled Bai Yudong. He had expected both sides of the corridor to be filled with Zombies, but this was quite unexpected.
"Going upstairs?" Chao Yifan asked.
"Leave two people downstairs to keep watch," Bai Yudong said, glancing at the group and hesitating. "How far is it from the Cooling Tower to here?"
Jiang He, having no real sense of distance, estimated based on how long it took everyone to run over. "About ten minutes, I guess?"
Bai Yudong checked his watch. "Alright, let's search the floors and regroup in ten minutes. Jiang He, you and Song Yao keep watch. If any Zombies come before we return, you two should retreat first."
"What about you guys?" Song Yao asked.
"We can't worry about that now. We can hold them off for a while inside; you two can go back and grab some guns to rescue us." Bai Yudong handed his watch to Jiang He. "Keep track of the time. If we haven't come down in ten minutes, you two should leave and wait until dawn to come back."
Seeing that his words sounded almost like a farewell, Song Yao expressed concern. "Maybe we should all just wait until dawn..."
"Without food and water, after a few days of this, our strength won't hold out. Don't worry too much; it should be fine. If we can't fight, we can always run."
In front of the White Tower, there were low steps leading up to two glass doors that swung open inward, revealing a dark void inside with no sound.
Bai Yudong tipped his hat up slightly, waved his hand, and two soldiers rushed into the White Tower. Bai Yudong and Chao Yifan followed closely behind, turning on their flashlights as they entered.
Jiang He and Song Yao dared not hesitate either.
