Chapter Twenty-Nine: Yellow Dog
Ming Junwei was right.
The dog leading the way, Erguotou, was not carrying a bone in its mouth; it was indeed two Type 81 rifles, identical to those of Bai Yudong and his group, standard issue.
The story begins with the four gunshots from last night.
That evening, Jiang He and his crew mistakenly entered through the back door, thinking it was the front. They sneaked in but soon startled a Zombie and had to make a hasty retreat. During this chaos, everyone was on high alert, focused solely on fighting off Zombies to escape, and no one noticed that the Yellow Dog had followed them in with its ears perked up. Later, when Bai Yudong and Big Mousy found themselves trapped in the office building, Jiang He, Song Yao, and Chao Yifan managed to escape and regrouped with Ming Junwei at the front entrance. In their rush, they didn’t pay attention to where the dog had gone.
When they reached the front entrance, they discovered a large truck and hurriedly discussed how to rescue their comrades. Worried about Bai Yudong and Big Mousy’s safety, they didn’t have time for thorough preparations. Relying on the truck's weight and speed, they charged straight through the front gate into the back courtyard of the office building. The entire process—from clearing Zombies to setting explosives upstairs and jumping out to escape—didn’t take long. During this time, everyone’s attention was completely consumed by the Zombies. After jumping out of the office building, they created a bloody path as they rushed out through the back door. It wasn’t until they planned to delve deeper into the Power Station that Ming Junwei suddenly remembered the Yellow Dog that had been trailing behind them.
He asked Pan Luo and Chao Yifan about it; both were too preoccupied with escaping to notice where the dog had gone. Chao Yifan had completely forgotten about it until Ming Junwei mentioned it. However, no one took it seriously at that moment; after all, they weren’t on vacation, and it was possible that the dog had run off due to the gunfire, so they didn’t bring it up again.
They clearly underestimated this quiet dog.
When Jiang He ’s group first entered the courtyard, they didn’t encounter many Zombies. The three of them worked together to clear out Zombies while Yellow Dog trailed slowly behind them. Once the area was cleared, Jiang He and Song Yao went down different alleyways to keep watch while Yellow Dog darted into the building.
Upstairs, Bai Yudong and his companions were attacked by Zombies, creating quite a commotion during their struggle. Yellow Dog wisely chose not to join in but instead cleverly slipped into a room to hide. As Chao Yifan and his companions made their escape, there were intermittent gunshots and explosions from the rescue effort at the front entrance; Yellow Dog steadfastly remained hidden and was once again left behind.
After Jiang He ’s group left, Yellow Dog figured that there should be no danger inside anymore and leisurely stepped out. To its surprise, a group of Zombies had entered through the front door and gathered in the hallway. Yellow Dog ran faster than any human; although the Zombies sensed living beings nearby, they clearly couldn’t catch up with it. After running around inside for a while, Yellow Dog caught a whiff of another scent and stealthily hid again in an office within the lobby.
Bearded Man’s accomplices heard gunfire coming from the office building. A month ago, they had ‘hosted’ a group of soldiers there, so naturally, they assumed it was another military unit arriving. Having committed some shady deeds themselves, they were fearful of ghosts knocking at their door. After some discussion, they decided to leave a few people to guard their supplies while eight others took weapons seized from last time and stealthily approached the office building.
As the Jiang He crew drove through the main entrance, they attracted the attention of Zombies wandering out from the Plant Area. Although their truck sped into the office area in the backyard, they were soon blocked by a horde of Zombies emerging from the Plant Area. With no other option, they had to take refuge in an abandoned Small Building, waiting for the Zombies to disperse before venturing out to investigate.
Before long, gunfire erupted from the office building, followed by a loud explosion that echoed through the night. Some of the Zombies chasing after them from the Plant Area entered the office building, while many others followed the truck outside. The group hiding inside had no knowledge of this; they quickly slipped into the office area along a tree-lined path. Aside from a pool of blood and mangled bodies at the entrance, they saw no other Zombies in sight.
Their Armed Forces consisted of only a Type 54 pistol and two Type 81 rifles with limited ammunition; most of their supplies had been exhausted over the past month. Many were left with only wrenches and crowbars to fight off the Zombies. There weren't many Zombies on the first floor of the office building, and with a few punches and kicks, they cleared them out. Hearing continuous growls from upstairs, they initially considered retreating. However, thinking about the unknown intruders, they decided it would be better to check things out. Their supplies were running low, and if they could scavenge anything from these people, it would be a great help. After all, they had been hiding in the Power Station for quite some time and had experience fighting Zombies. They believed that if they approached under the pretense of offering help, they could coordinate with those trapped upstairs to eliminate the Zombies without issue.
Worried about the intruders' forces, two men carrying Type 81 rifles hid their weapons in a room, planning to take out these people first before retrieving their gear.
Thus, their misfortune began.
The overly clever group called out for what felt like an eternity without receiving any response from the 'trapped personnel.' Instead, they inadvertently attracted the attention of Zombies congested at the second-floor windows. Realizing something was wrong, they thought those people must have been torn apart by Zombies and quickly retreated down the stairs to escape. Just then, they spotted a shadow darting through the hall with a Rifle in its grasp, rushing toward the exit.
Without thinking twice, their leader raised his hand and fired four shots. He missed his target but was instead overwhelmed by a swarm of Zombies pouring down the stairs, instantly engulfed by the Horde.
The remaining seven were terrified by this sudden turn of events and frantically fought their way out of the hall. The sounds of gunfire and explosions made those left behind uneasy as well. Mediterranean and Round-Headed Man decided to go assist their comrades; taking advantage of fewer Zombies in the Plant Area, they ran toward a nearby intersection. At that moment, Jiang He's group burst through the main entrance again and was forced to stop before running into the Boiler Room on foot.
Mediterranean and his companion saw trucks entering the factory and initially thought it was their own people. It wasn't until Jiang He's crew jumped out of their vehicles to flee that they realized invaders had emerged from there. Using their familiarity with the layout of Plant Area buildings, they stealthily hid in shadows to observe what these newcomers were up to. However, Mediterranean accidentally caught Jiang He's eye—not once but twice.
After some discussion between them, they concluded that since intruders were here now...
