Chapter 37: Trapped 0

“Damn it!” Caroline cursed as she spotted the approaching zombies in the distance, drawn by the gunfire. “Why are there so many here?” 0

Wu Wentao flicked off the ash from his cigar, slicked back his hair, and chuckled, “This is their old haunt.” 0

“Should we lay low for a bit?” Caroline, fearless as she was, chose to be cautious in the face of such a clear disparity between friend and foe. 0

“We should head upstairs to prevent them from slipping away,” Wu Wentao tossed aside his cigar, grabbed his rifle, and called out to the ten men behind him. They quickly crossed the Green Belt and rushed to the dormitory below. Some eager team members fired at the approaching horde of zombies, sending several of them sprawling. 0

Inside the dormitory, a tall warrior peered through the window at the commotion outside and fired a few shots. Unfortunately, they had no effect. The newcomers were highly professional, adept at evading defensive maneuvers, and within moments, they all reached the base of the dormitory and entered a blind spot for shooting. 0

The tall warrior had been exchanging fire with two burly men; he had taken one down but when he reloaded and peeked out again, he found another already collapsed on the ground. Assessing the situation, he recalled that Dr. An and her group were still inside one of the rooms, causing his heart to race. If those downstairs charged up, they would turn a corner right into Dr. An's room—there would be no escape. 0

Known as "Pillar," this tall warrior was not dull-witted; in fact, he was quite clever. With an idea forming in his mind, he heard continued gunfire from the right corridor and rolled out of his room. He raised his weapon and shot down a man crouched at the stairwell who was locked in a standoff with his comrade. 0

The other man realized too late that he was in trouble and quickly ducked into a nearby room. He swung his gun around and fired off a burst of bullets to buy himself some time. 0

In the dormitory on the right side of the corridor were two of his comrades; He Yong had been pushed back to the third floor while another soldier was hiding somewhere unknown. Pillar saw both comrades peek out from their room and quickly gestured for them to be cautious—there was an enemy next door. 0

As they frantically communicated with hand signals, they suddenly heard noises in the hallway. Pillar cursed under his breath; it seemed those people had already made their way inside. 0

The other two warriors also heard the commotion and aimed their guns at the hallway entrance. 0

Suddenly, what had been a cacophony of gunfire in the dormitory fell silent, except for the swarm of zombies pouring into the hallway. 0

The corridor wasn’t wide but could accommodate twelve people. Wu Wentao and Caroline stood side by side at the corner, listening to the sounds from above without making any rash moves. Two burly men struggled to close a gate; without keys, they could only rely on brute force. One man pulled desperately on the gate while bracing himself against the wall with all his strength. Meanwhile, his companion grabbed an axe and began hacking away at any arms that reached through the gate. 0

The burly man hiding in the dormitory knew he was surrounded by enemies on both sides. Cunning and patient, he leaned against the wall, aiming his gun at the door, waiting for the right moment. 0

Moments later, a gunshot from the third floor shattered the silence. 0

A man who had chased up to the third floor collapsed to the ground, a tall, thin figure behind him holding a Glock 18, smoke curling from the barrel. 0

The man closed the door behind him, stripped the weapons and ammunition from the corpse, and then dragged the body outside. 0

They did not pursue He Yong; the third floor was empty, devoid of any sound. The two men checked each dorm room from left to right, and at the end of the right corridor, the man shot his temporary partner. 0

Peering out of the window, he glanced down. Zombies were continuously closing in; the open space in front of the dormitory was already crowded with them. The figures of Wu Wentao and others, who had previously lingered behind the Green Belt, were nowhere to be seen. After a moment of thought, he closed the door and quickly crouched down to run to the stairwell, turning up to the fourth floor. 0

The people in the first-floor corridor remained still. A man used a hand axe to secure the gate, freeing his companion who had been struggling with it. 0

Outside, zombies were clamoring; inside, there was silence. 0

Caroline's eyes flashed with confusion as she poked Wu Wentao with her finger and pointed upward. 0

Wu Wentao shrugged and indicated with a square device in his hand that their green dot had merged with a red one. 0

"What are we waiting for? Let's go," Caroline said impatiently. She was frustrated with Wu Wentao's passive approach. Clearly, their side had gained an advantage during the recent exchange of fire; rushing in with gunfire could resolve this issue. Why wait? However, she was merely coordinating with Wu Wentao and did not have direct authority to give orders. No matter how dissatisfied she felt, there was little she could do. 0

She wasn't alone in her impatience; Jiang He in the warehouse was also pacing anxiously as if his rear were on fire. 0

"Calm down, what's the rush?" Ming Junwei tapped his leg while sitting by the ventilation window, cigarette butts scattered at his feet. 0

"I can't sit still. If we can't go out, at least let us walk around," Jiang He shot him a glare and continued pacing. 0

Song Yao sat nearby, resting her chin on her hand, quietly observing the others with her beautiful eyes, lost in thought. 0

Chao Yifan sat cross-legged on the floor, bored out of his mind. He meticulously unloaded bullets from his handgun one by one, then reloaded them back into the magazine, spending over half an hour playing with five bullets. 0

Jiang He's antics went unnoticed as he paced around aimlessly. Eventually feeling bored himself, he sulkily sat down and grabbed some snacks to munch on. 0

The graduate student huddled in a corner, his gaze darting between the group while occasionally sneaking glances toward the partition. The father and son duo that Chao Yifan had thrown in there had been silent for a while—whether they were asleep or not was unclear. 0

Noticing Jiang He's frustration, Ming Junwei jumped down from the pipe and sat across from him. "What's wrong? Can't you be patient?" 0

Jiang He lit a cigarette and fell silent for a moment before saying, "I don't know what's wrong; I'm just anxious." 0

"There's nothing to be anxious about. Old Bai is right; the best thing we can do is wait here patiently. What good would it do to go out into the gunfire?" 0

"I'm not trying to get involved in that; I'm worried about Xiao Pan Luo and Sister An's son." Jiang He scratched his head and said seriously, "Two new groups have come in; you can see them from the water tower, right?" 0
