Chapter Seventy-Two: The Struggle of a Cornered Beast 0

To Pan Luo, Chao Yifan's reckless charge was clearly a path to self-destruction. Zombies surged in like a tide, overwhelming him in the blink of an eye. 0

The display cases in the store were arranged in a concave shape, and the Zombies that burst through the glass door lunged directly at the Cash Register. Behind the Cash Register, Chao Yifan let out a furious roar and leaped over the counter wielding a Stainless Steel Hanging Blade! 0

The simple quenched and polished Magic Greatsword sliced through the air, sending a head with hair as wild as weeds soaring into the sky. A thick stream of blood gushed from the severed neck, and the headless corpse stumbled forward for a few steps before crashing heavily onto the Tile Floor. 0

A small Girl, half-hanging from the windowsill, shifted from despair to shock as she watched Chao Yifan unleash a spray of Blood Mist with that massive sword that seemed ready to shatter at any moment! 0

In the midst of battle, Chao Yifan was oblivious to how others perceived him. Personally, he found the thrill of beheading an enemy far more exhilarating than gunfire! For a brief moment, he forgot his perilous situation; his great sword whirled like a windmill, cutting through flesh and unleashing chaos. 0

However, this heroic scene of taking down enemies among thousands did not last long. After toppling nearly ten corpses in front of him, his aching arms began to remind him that he had to face the harsh reality before him. 0

Chao Yifan had not completely lost his sanity. He feigned a strike and rolled over a Glass Display Case, then raised his hand to topple a Glass Display Stand, tripping several crazed Zombies rushing toward him. In the midst of his frantic movements, he glanced around and saw that most Zombies had already poured in through the open store door. Only a few remained outside against the Tempered Glass Walls. In front of him stood several display cases lined up in a row; they were not very tall. Although Zombies would not actively climb, they saw no obstacles in their way. Those behind pushed forward desperately, causing the Zombies leaning against the display cases to topple onto the counter, struggling to rise and continue clawing at the living. 0

Some Zombies also noticed Pan Luo half-hanging from the windowsill. They broke away from the crowded mass, raising their decaying arms high and drooling foul-smelling saliva as they roared in an attempt to reach the small Girl above. Pan Luo leaned forward slightly, steadying herself on the window frame as she drew her pistol, intending to lighten Chao Yifan's burden. 0

As she turned to draw her gun, Pan Luo suddenly realized that she had lost track of the column that had fallen earlier. The empty Public Security Compound was eerily silent, starkly contrasting with the noisy crowd inside Cordyceps Shop. 0

"Yi Fan! The entrance!" Seeing Chao Yifan cornered and about to be overwhelmed, Pan Luo steeled herself and fired a shot at the Tempered Glass Wall. 0

Bang! 0

Gunfire erupted suddenly, leaving a bullet hole in the transparent glass wall. The area around the hole exploded into a web of cracks, yet the glass remained intact. 0

Chao Yifan pierced a Zombie's skull with his sword, kicked the creature aside, and swung his blade fiercely! A barely noticeable crisp sound was drowned out by the Zombies' chaotic roars as the one-meter-long stainless steel blade flew up abruptly, spinning like a windmill before falling into the Horde. 0

Chao Yifan's powerful downward slash failed to connect, instead shattering his great sword. He had swung too hard and nearly stumbled into the Horde of Zombies. Startled, Chao Tianwang cursed under his breath, discarded the sword hilt, and drew his pistol, shooting several blood-splattered heads. Pan Luo's high-altitude fire support relentlessly assisted Chao Yifan, as several shots hit the glass wall, finally turning the tempered glass into a fine powder. 0

But at this moment, Chao Yifan had been cornered by the Horde, with nothing but intricately carved wooden screens on either side for cover. Chao Tianwang knew their time was running out; he reached for two screens and dragged them over, retreating into the corner while using the wooden screens as a barrier in front of him. 0

When faced with imminent death, the instinct to survive often sparks unexpected brilliance. Whether intentional or not, it can create a glimmer of hope. 0

The wooden screens were not large; they were originally meant for decoration in the shop—half solid wood and half intricately carved. With a swift tug, Chao Yifan positioned one screen in front of him just as a Zombie lunged forward, pressing it tightly between the two walls and leaving a triangular space for Chao Yifan to catch his breath. 0

Panting heavily, Chao Yifan slowly lowered the pistol he had pressed against his temple. Through the carved openings, he gazed at the crazed and grotesque faces of the Zombies behind him. Observing his precarious situation in that corner made him unexpectedly chuckle softly. 0

While he was barely hanging on here, Pan Luo at the window watched helplessly as Zombies flooded into the entire Cordyceps Shop. 0

The little girl’s face turned pale as she stared blankly at the mass of Zombies. She hoarsely called out, “Yi Fan? Are you still alive?” 0

In that corner, Chao Yifan felt a surge of relief and shouted back, “You all run! Get help! I can hold them off—” Before he could finish speaking, he noticed the carved openings beginning to bend under pressure as cracks appeared before his eyes. 0

“I can hold them off for a bit! Hurry back!” Chao Yifan's face was drenched in sweat as he watched the cracks on the wood become more pronounced, his heart racing up and down with anxiety. 0

If he had been submerged in that sea of Zombies earlier, perhaps he could have faced death calmly. But now that there was a glimmer of hope, it would not be so easy to force him to submit to death again. 0

Chao Yifan leaned against the wall, recovering his strength. He knocked on the lower wooden part of the screen, which sounded quite solid; it should be sturdy enough. Fortunately, the Zombies were all pushing forward in a frenzy, pressing tightly against the outside of the screen, distributing their weight fairly evenly. 0

Bald Kid searched his body and tore open a piece of hawthorn candy, tossing it into his mouth. The sweet and sour burst on his tongue finally calmed his racing heart. 0

Pan Luo, perched on the windowsill, heard Chao Yifan's response and was filled with excitement. She shouted back, her hands gripping the edge of the window as she dangled in mid-air. The skylight was quite high, and Pan Luo hung down so that her feet were still over a meter above the ground. 0

The little Girl aimed for a landing spot and let go, executing a practiced roll upon hitting the ground. Ignoring the dust on her clothes, she quickly ran into the center of the Courtyard. 0

"Zhuzi Brother?!" The empty Courtyard echoed with Pan Luo's slightly childish voice, but there was no sign of Zhuzi anywhere. 0

Underneath the basketball hoop lay a folded ladder, and on the other side stood a row of blue-roofed houses. The surfaces of the buildings were tiled, and a dark red wooden door bore the name of an office. Pan Luo glanced at the main entrance; the green iron gate was tightly shut and secured with a bolt, indicating that Zhuzi had not gone out. 0

The little Girl was anxious. She peered into each room of the relay station next to the iron gate until she finally spotted Zhuzi crouched inside through a window at the corner leading to the Armory. 0
