Chapter Ninety: Samurai Spirit, Aiming to Cease Hostilities (Part One)
Luci dressed An Zheng, while Tabby Cat stealthily approached the corpse, sniffing at the severed neck before jumping back in disgust.
Cao Liang leaned against the car, panting heavily. His back was torn and ragged from glass shards, with several pieces embedded in his flesh.
Luci's face turned pale; the bloody scene had knocked Fatty Three unconscious and startled her as well. She fought to suppress the nausea churning in her stomach, unwilling to look at the body again. The mingled stench of blood and gasoline around the car was overwhelming.
"I killed someone," An Zheng murmured, still unconscious, his head resting on a cushion he had pulled from the car. Luci was splattered with blood from her struggle with Liang Bao; bits of flesh had splashed onto her. She shook herself off quickly, not daring to think about what those strands of meat might be.
Cao Liang sighed and pushed himself up against the car. "You were protecting everyone."
"What about Wheat?" Luci's body trembled slightly; whether it was from exhaustion after the fight or the sudden chill of the night air, her voice quivered with unshed tears.
"I'll go find the child." They had overheard Liang Bao and his group talking behind the earthen wall; Wheat had been taken back, and Liang Bao considered him a nuisance, ordering someone to dispose of him far away. It had been half a day without any sign of that person returning, so he must have gone quite a distance.
"I'll go; your leg isn't fit for this." Luci insisted, not wanting to stay near the corpse any longer. She immediately stood up and blocked Cao Liang's path.
Cao Liang was about to argue when Yellow Dog suddenly barked at Hemp Grass Field. They turned to see a young man standing in the grass, staring blankly at the corpse beside the wheel, seemingly still in shock.
"No need to search anymore," Cao Liang said as he picked up a blood-soaked shard of glass from the ground and limped toward the young man.
Toothless Kid's legs gave way, and he collapsed onto the ground, his eyes wide and unblinking.
"Where's the child?" Cao Liang scanned their surroundings; all he could see were swaying weeds in the wind. The sound of the breeze grew softer, drowning out any other noise.
"Threw him by the roadside," Toothless Kid replied without looking at Cao Liang, his gaze fixed on a pool of dark red on the ground. He struggled to comprehend it all. This man before him was tall and imposing, but Liang Bao was no less formidable. How could this man—who was also a cripple—have managed to take down Liang Bao? Even Jin Bo couldn't withstand Liang Bao's punches; how did this cripple manage to do what he did?
Cao Liang didn’t provide an answer. He grabbed Toothless Kid by his collar and dragged him back to where they had parked.
An Zheng slowly regained consciousness. Luci held him close, whispering something softly. The female doctor looked pale, still not fully recovered from the violent impact.
Cao Liang used a dog leash to bind Toothless Kid’s hands behind his back, turning his face away from An Zheng. He felt that An Zheng’s humiliation stemmed from his own failure to act in time. After unleashing his rage through murder, An Zheng returned to his former gentle self. Though he appeared strong and imposing on the outside, inside he was incredibly soft-hearted. Cao Liang thought it best for Luci to handle things; he couldn’t just walk over and say something like, "Dr. An, I'm sorry; if I had acted more decisively, you wouldn't have been assaulted."
"I'll go find the child. You all wait for me here." Cao Liang pulled a short dagger from behind Toothless Kid, thinking to himself that this kid was truly scared out of his wits, to surrender so readily.
"Wait." An Zheng sat up with difficulty, seemingly pulling at his wound, his expression momentarily pained. He whispered, "I’ll go too."
"Sister An, you... you need to take it easy first." Luci hesitated, unsure how to express her concern, and could only offer vague reassurances.
"Let’s go together. Find a vehicle; we need to leave." An Zheng insisted, struggling to stand. The world spun around him, and he nearly collapsed again.
"But they haven't come out yet." Luci was anxious; An Zheng's condition did not look good.
"They must be in trouble." An Zheng glanced at the corpses on the ground, his brow twitching slightly.
Cao Liang stepped forward to support An Zheng and echoed, "They said before they left that if anything went wrong, we must retreat first; otherwise, we’d all be caught. There’s a group of them, and there might be more."
Although Luci was worried about Wheat, she realized this wasn’t just about Wheat alone. She agreed with their decision and helped An Zheng as they made their way into the Artemisia Bush.
Toothless Kid remained silent, allowing Cao Liang to push him along as he stumbled ahead to lead the way.
"Sister An, how are you? Let me carry you," Luci offered softly when she noticed An Zheng struggling to walk. It was clear she was seriously injured but couldn’t say it outright.
An Zheng gently shook his head, took a breath, and replied calmly, "I’m fine." Then he added quietly, "Thank you."
In the Underground Bunker, the group of young people returning for support unexpectedly encountered Old Timer carrying Zheng Qiutong.
"Jin Zhong!" Old Timer breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing familiar faces. He waved his hand for the short-haired youth not to worry about him and scanned the area with confusion. "Why are there only a few of you?"
"Dachun and Liang Bao are behind us." Jin Zhong's face was filled with urgency. They had discovered Bao Cheng's corpse after coming down from the tunnel and had barely taken a few steps when they heard gunfire echoing from deep within the passageway, causing everyone to panic.
"Hurry back and help out; be careful—the zombies have been released." Old Timer took a couple of swigs from a water bottle handed to him. Zheng Qiutong had stopped crying but bore tear stains on her face, her expression one of despair.
"What are you doing, Uncle Pao?"
"Nantang Township, call those big-headed soldiers." The Old Timer handed the water bottle to Qiu Tong and instructed Jin Zhong and the others, "Little Gold and the others are holding the front. Besides the Zombies, there's also a group that went into the cave. If you run into Face, don't hold back."
"I understand," Jin Zhong said as he pulled a set of keys from his pocket and handed them to the Old Timer. "The car is parked in the mining area. Be careful on your way."
"Got it." The Old Timer pocketed the keys and ran out with Zheng Qiutong.
"I told you there was a car outside; it turns out someone has found the cave," Jin Zhong remarked. His face showed signs of age, with a stubbly jawline that had turned blue from shaving. His facial features were strong, with thick eyebrows and large eyes that gave him an air of heroism. However, his nose seemed to have been broken before, marked by a deep scar that made him look particularly odd.
"Jin Zhong, the ammunition is in the Bright Treasure Car, and we didn't take the Dynamite either," a miniature version of Dick Cowboy reminded him.
"You go get it; we'll head over first," Jin Zhong tossed the keys to him. "Isn't the Dynamite in the storage room?"
"Liang Bao took it when he left." The small Dick Cowboy was a skinny guy with messy shoulder-length hair, wearing an ill-fitting t-shirt and ripped leather pants, topped off with a pair of high-top boots—he looked like a rock-and-roll youth.
"Leave a crack in the car window; don't suffocate that Girl," Jin Zhong called out from a distance. In their haste to return, they had thrown all their supplies back in the car and only grabbed their weapons before rushing down into the cave.
When they arrived at Tunnel No. 4, a major retreat was underway. Chang Laowai was directing men and women chaotically retreating down the passageway. At first glance, it looked like an entire family was moving out—some carried large bags, others balanced pots and pans, while some dragged boxes and blankets along. There were even those trying to sneak into Golden Treasure Cave to steal gold.
Zheng Er had clearly instructed that the retreat needed to be swift; no belongings were necessary since he had no intention of abandoning the Air Raid Shelter—he just wanted to clear space for Jin Bo and his crew to fight fiercely. Unfortunately, these families lacked the execution he had imagined; as soon as Chang Laowai shouted "retreat," the entire living area descended into chaos.
Zheng Er had only one daughter. Although he often had women brought back to warm his bed, none stayed long by his side. Those women either sought death out of humiliation or resigned themselves to their fate, mingling with others here for food and safety. The younger girls were somewhat sensible; they quickly grabbed self-defense tools and retreated with Uncle Two's escorts. However, those middle-aged and older individuals...
