Chapter 120: Interrogation 3
Standing at the back, Old Ma spoke up in time, "He's hurt pretty badly; he can't take much more."
"Oh?" The woman turned to glance at him, skepticism in her eyes. "He didn't look like someone who was injured just now."
"Take off his clothes and see," Old Ma seemed indifferent to her, not even bothering to look at her.
The bare-chested man complied, yanking Jiang He's shirt open to reveal the bandages soaked with sweat and blood.
Big Cap waved his hand, signaling the bare-chested man to step back. Clearing his throat, he said, "My surname is He; I am the highest authority here."
"Store manager?" Jiang He scoffed, a defiant expression on his face as he retorted, "I've seen plenty of people claiming to be in charge these past few months. What exactly are you responsible for?"
"Youth, a war of words is not a skill. You'd better think carefully before answering my next question. I'm getting old and not very patient. You should know what happens to those who are of no value," He Wei Guo rubbed his forehead, clearly displeased with Jiang He's attitude, and somewhat disappointed in Shaoshan as well. If Zhou Huai hadn't accidentally spotted Jiang He, this lead might have been lost.
Jiang He didn't respond immediately; he forced himself to stay calm. The current situation left no room for jokes. It was obvious that these people were not to be trifled with.
So far, Jiang He knew there were two groups looking for An Zheng: one was the armed thugs who stormed the Power Station, and the other was this group of inscrutable individuals before him. Judging by their attire, they looked like soldiers ready for a parade, but their demeanor was no different from that of armed thugs—if anything, they were even more intimidating. Previously, Jiang He had been trying to seek refuge with Garrison; now it seemed Bai Yudong might be the most ideal soldier they had encountered.
What made Jiang He hesitate even more was the foreigner sitting next to Old Man in a Big Hat. He was shackled and dressed in dark combat gear. Jiang He had seen this outfit twice before: once in videos from the Service Area and Gas Station, and once among the armed thugs at the Power Station. According to their analysis of those videos, these thugs were supposed to be enemies of the military; yet this foreigner didn’t seem like a prisoner at all—except for the handcuffs.
Jiang He's mind raced while Shaoshan and Old Ma felt increasingly anxious. They hadn't expected Jiang He to know An Zheng; had they known earlier, they could have resolved everything by visiting the place Jiang He mentioned. But then again, things rarely worked out so conveniently—they didn’t even know what An Zheng looked like.
After a long silence, He Wei Guo felt it was time to get straight to the point. He cleared his throat and asked bluntly, "Where is An Zheng?"
"I can tell you, but—"
"You have no room for negotiation; just answer me directly." He Wei Guo shook his finger, cutting off Jiang He's struggle.
Suppressing his anger, Jiang He scanned the crowd with a complex expression before shaking his head firmly.
He Wei Guo exchanged glances with the Crippled Woman beside him; she sighed softly and said, "Alright then, what do you want?"
"I want him dead." Jiang He fixed his gaze on He Wei Guo's eyes and squeezed out three words through clenched teeth.
Zhou Huai paused for a moment before bursting into a harsh laugh, blood spattering from his toothless mouth onto the ground.
Not only did Zhou Huai react unusually, but even He Wei Guo and Shaoshan showed obvious surprise. They had thought that Jiang He's bargaining would focus on self-preservation or benefits, but unexpectedly, this guy opened his mouth to demand a life. However, given his previous behavior, Shaoshan and the others understood; it seemed these two not only knew each other but also harbored deep grievances.
He Wei Guo pondered for a moment and said, "No problem, but I want to see An Zheng first." Old He agreed readily; Zhou Huai held no value for him. After extensive interrogation and investigation, they had confirmed that the data equipment had been destroyed by Zhou Huai. The purpose of the torture was merely to vent frustration and inquire about An Zheng's whereabouts, after all, the data equipment had come from An Zheng's hands. Now with Jiang He in the mix, who happened to know where An Zheng was, Zhou Huai had become expendable.
"How do I know you won't deceive me?" Jiang He glared at him, not bothering to hide his disgust and distrust.
"What else can you do?" He Wei Guo narrowed his eyes and whispered something to Shaoshan.
"Right now, let me kill him." Jiang He's clenched fists relaxed after he spoke those words, feeling a strange sensation wash over him. When did he start openly talking about taking a life?
"Bring An Zheng before me; you can deal with this person as you wish." He Wei Guo seemed a bit weary. Putting on his Big Cap, he stood up and instructed before leaving the room, "Ten minutes. Shaoshan, take him out in ten minutes. Don't let me down again."
The Crippled Woman silently tidied up some papers on the table, turned her wheelchair, and followed He Wei Guo out of the interrogation room.
Two soldiers entered from outside and carried the drowsy Foreigner out. It was then that Jiang He realized this Foreigner only had one leg.
With that, the interrogation room was left with Shaoshan, Old Ma, Jiang He, Zhou Huai, and two Bare-Chested Enforcers. The group exchanged glances in silence for a long time.
" Jiang He, you..." Shaoshan hesitated before sighing and moving a stool to sit across from Jiang He. He waved his hand for the two big men to step outside.
"Let me go; I'll kill him and take you to find An Zheng." Jiang He glanced at Zhou Huai, who shot him a sidelong glance without any awareness of being a lamb to slaughter.
"No way; you heard what He Wei Guo said—he means what he says." Shaoshan shook his head and gestured towards Zhou Huai, asking, "What grievances do you have with each other?"
"Too many." Jiang He casually replied. After thinking for a moment, he asked, "What do you need An Zheng for?"
"Confidential."
"Will she be killed?"
"...No."
"If I take you to find An Zheng, can everyone else go free?"
"Yes."
"Really?" Jiang He looked at him doubtfully, feeling it was somewhat unreliable.
"There’s no need to lie to you. The mission target is An Zheng; as for the others, they just shouldn’t interfere," Shaoshan said, scratching his head, feeling a bit surprised. "I never expected you to hide so deep."
"Do I have a place to argue?" Jiang He spat, shaking his tightly bound arms. "Can you loosen these? Didn’t that old man say ten minutes?"
Seeing that he wasn’t going to haggle any further, Shaoshan quickly untied him.
Jiang He rubbed his wrists and glared at Zhou Huai, whose face was so beaten it was unrecognizable, feeling a twinge of irritation in his teeth.
"Enjoy your last moments."
"You can’t kill me."
Zhou Huai spat out some blood, mumbling back with a grin.
The sky was darkening, rain threatening to fall, and the streets were bustling with hurried people.
Although this trip was officially labeled as a "search for someone," the number of accompanying personnel clearly suggested a massacre was on the agenda. After all, there were thirty armed soldiers in the truck behind them, not a neatly arranged honor guard.
The personnel in the front vehicle remained unchanged. Chen Zhao Zhou had been sent off somewhere, while Old Ma and Jiang He sat side by side in the back. One of them was puffing on a cigarette, the sparks flickering dimly in the cold atmosphere.
"Shaoshan,"
