Chapter 148: Before Dawn (Part Two)
Ming Junwei and the others were stunned; it was Jia Changfa. Jia Changfa was also taken aback, raising his hands, his body covered in soot, staring blankly at Ming Junwei and the others lying beneath the mound.
"Fellow Villager?" the man in black called out twice.
"Uh? Hey!" Jia Changfa was momentarily flustered, glancing up and down, his lips trembling.
Ming Junwei stared intently at him, raising a finger to his lips. He wasn't sure if Jia Changfa would heed his silent request; if it were him, he certainly wouldn't…
"Don't be afraid, Fellow Villager. We are from the Government Relief Team. Have you been bitten?" The man in black took a few steps forward, causing fine sand to slip from the edge of the mound and fall onto the faces of those below.
Jin Bo and Chao Yifan were closest to the edge of the mound, holding their breath and wide-eyed as they watched Jia Changfa. Jin Bo nudged Chao Yifan with his fingertip, pointed to his head, and made a slashing motion across his throat. Chao Yifan understood and cautiously shifted his position, but Luci held his hand down, frowning slightly and shaking her head gently.
"No, no bites," Jia Changfa swallowed hard, his gaze darting around.
"Don't be nervous. Follow me; we are here to rescue the Survivors," the man in black said without advancing further, shaking his flashlight to signal Jia Changfa to come over.
Jia Changfa stood frozen in place, glancing at the terrified crowd beneath the mound before calling out to the turning man in black: "Leader! I report!"
"Damn!" Chao Yifan cursed under his breath and suddenly lunged up the mound, grabbing hold of the man's legs. Before the man could react with a shout, Jin Bo leaped up and swung his knife, slicing through the man's throat just as he pulled the trigger. The two acted simultaneously with perfect timing; the rifle fired wildly as bullets tore through the air near Luci's feet.
They flipped the body of the man in black over, and Jia Changfa screamed in shock, turning to flee. Jin Bo threw out his long knife; a flash of cold light shot through the air and pierced into Jia Changfa's back. The blade continued through him! Jia Changfa let out a muffled groan and collapsed onto the sand without moving.
Luci was stunned, trembling as she pulled her legs back, nervously checking her toes. Seeing that nothing was missing, she finally let out a long sigh of relief.
Ming Junwei and the others could only click their tongues in astonishment; they gave a thumbs-up to Chao Yifan and Jin Bo, unsure if it was praise or mockery.
Song Yao lifted the rifle of the man in black and slung it over his shoulder, preparing to search him for more supplies. Just then, he heard shouting from above. Peeking out, he saw five or six searching figures in black realizing something was off, and they all charged toward him.
"Run!" Song Yao decisively pulled the trigger and shouted a warning to the others. Xiaomi and Xiao Wei quickly climbed up the sand ridge to cover him, firing off their last few bullets at the approaching men in black.
The enemy took a hit from the first wave of gunfire from Song Yao and his companions, with two of them going down. But as they retaliated with concentrated fire, Xiaomi and Xiao Wei suddenly found themselves out of ammo.
"Let's go!" As Song Yao dove to the ground, the spot where they had just been lying was riddled with bullets.
The brief skirmish had alerted those by the truck. The men in black pulled out their walkie-talkies and called for reinforcements. A truck on the road opened up, and dozens of men in black poured out, splitting into three groups as they rushed toward them. Gunfire erupted continuously, forcing everyone to retreat toward Rooftop and Xiao Tian Village. The flames there were already uncontrollable, and faint cries could still be heard. The zombies wandering down from Rooftop collided once again with the group.
This crisis was far more dangerous than before; these newly appeared men in black were evidently a greater threat than the zombies. Gunshots rang out from all directions, drawing the aimless zombies toward the sound. Jin Bo, Chao Yifan, and Zeng Yadong drew their knives to clear a path for those behind them. In a flash of cold steel, the encroaching flaming zombies were hacked apart, blood splattering everywhere. An Zheng and several other weaker fighters managed to climb up the soft sand ridge with help. Wheat stumbled as he sank into the ground, a zombie lunging at him. Luci stepped forward to shove the zombie away while Zeng Yadong quickly took position, throwing his Miao Knife to pin down the zombie that had tackled Luci.
The men in black pursued relentlessly; their leader realized what was happening and sent another batch of men holding searchlights after them. The incessant gunfire tore through the night, and dawn's light began to break on the horizon.
Chao Yifan's knife handle was slick with sweat, and a painful wound in his palm slowed his movements significantly. Looking around, he saw they were surrounded by both men in black and zombies closing in on all sides.
The running continued; Song Yao had run out of bullets. Jin Bo and his companions fought desperately against the zombies before them, hoping they could return to Cave Dwelling before being completely encircled—at least there they could catch their breath for a moment. Flames soared high into the sky from Rooftop, turning that part of the sky a fiery red.
Bang!
Another gunshot rang out.
Luci felt a chill at her waist; her steps faltered as she rolled down the sand dune.
"Sister Qianqian!" Wheat cried out in anguish, breaking free from Xiaomi's grasp as he rushed downhill to save Luci. Xiaomi threw himself onto Wheat to hold him back just as another bullet whizzed through the air, striking Xiaomi squarely in the temple. He fell sideways to the ground, shielding Wheat beneath him as crimson mixed with white brain matter spread slowly across the damp sand like an ink wash painting.
"Run!" Ming Junwei's eyes widened with rage as he picked up Wheat and threw her to Cao Liang. A Zombie staggered and lunged at him, knocking Ming Junwei down, both he and the corpse rolling down the sand dune.
Bang!
Cao Liang fell in response.
Bang!
Zeng Yadong's Miao Knife slipped from his grip.
Bang!
Song Yao collapsed, unconscious.
Bang!
...
Dozens of men in black surrounded them, their rifles sweeping the area, clearing out the nearby Zombies and trapping the remaining few who were either standing or fallen.
Chao Yifan, Jin Bo, An Zheng, Su Lan, Wheat, and Xiao Wei—the ones still able to stand—gasped heavily, gripping their blood-soaked weapons while holding onto each other and the children, remaining silent.
