Chapter One Hundred Sixty-Four: The Unknown
Things happened too quickly, so fast that neither Old Six nor Song Yao seemed to have time to scream before they vanished. Luci stood frozen, watching the two fall, while the man picked up the cylindrical object without even glancing at the handsome man pinned beneath Cao Liang. He turned and jumped into the hole, climbing down the ladder.
“Bastard! Come back!” The handsome man shouted angrily, and Cao Liang, filled with rage, swung a fist that sent blood and several teeth flying from the handsome man's mouth.
Luci scrambled to the edge of the hole, her hair lifted by the gusts of wind swirling around it. Below was a gray expanse; the man had already disappeared from sight. The Bull Terrier was undoubtedly the luckiest; he could see nothing and only heard the sounds of fighting and curses, unaware of what had transpired. Huihui hid behind him, trembling silently.
Cao Liang helped Luci to her feet, bitterness filling his mouth. The hole was at least twenty meters above ground, and he couldn’t bear to think about how Song Yao had fallen. He shot a resentful glance at the handsome man, clenched his fists, but ultimately couldn’t bring himself to throw him down as well.
“What do we do… what should we do…” Luci felt completely deflated, her body leaning against Cao Liang’s side, her eyes vacant and lost. Another companion had fallen; zombies swarmed below, and there was no way to retreat or advance—what could they do?
Cao Liang’s face was grim as he helped Luci sit in a corner far from the hole. He grabbed the handsome man by the collar and dragged him toward the edge. The handsome man struggled fiercely, kicking and fighting, but he couldn’t break free from Cao Liang’s iron grip.
“Get lost, before I decide to kill you,” Cao Liang trembled with rage. This gentle man couldn’t understand why this was happening. They had come this far without anyone being killed by zombies; they had escaped countless hordes but kept stumbling in front of living people.
The handsome man gasped for breath, wiping blood from his mouth as his gaze drifted toward Huihui in the corner. Huihui quickly averted her eyes, afraid to look at him.
“Why don’t you just kill me?” The handsome man laughed mockingly as he leaned against the wall unsteadily. Facing Cao Liang, who towered over him, he still clung to a glimmer of hope: “Big Guy, go ahead and kill me.”
“Enough! Just leave!” Huihui couldn’t help but tremble as she spoke: “Why are you doing this?”
“Whose side are you two on?” The handsome man shouted furiously, pointing at the blind Bull Terrier: “I’m trying to protect you! Do you think there’s any future following this blind fool? We’re in this together; why do you trust these outsiders over me?”
“Because they haven’t harmed anyone,” Bull Terrier said protectively as he shielded Huihui beside him, staring blankly toward the hole and murmuring: “We’re all trapped here; why should we turn on each other?”
"You worthless piece of trash, stop with the pretty words!" The handsome man spat disdainfully, staring at Cao Liang's expressionless face. He sneered, "People like you will die sooner or later! Don't think you're so impressive! Acting like a savior or a good person? Damn it—ahhh!"
His angry tirade was abruptly cut off as he suddenly let out a horrific scream, collapsing to the ground while clutching his leg. A few onlookers focused in and saw that both of his feet had been severed cleanly at the ankles, a thick stream of blood gushing from the neat stumps. Caught off guard by the attack, he howled in pain and anger, completely oblivious to the figure emerging from the entrance.
"Maybe you'll die, but not today."
The newcomer tossed a bloodied machete aside and jumped up onto the platform with both hands braced.
Cao Liang's mouth fell open, his pupils dilating as he stumbled back two steps. Luci and Huihui wore similar expressions, their mouths agape as if they could swallow the Himalayas. Only Bull Terrier remained lost in the depths of darkness, anxiously asking, "What happened? Who is it? Tell me!"

"Ding!"
The elevator reached the third underground level, and the warehouse door slowly opened. Summer Rain rushed in with three anxious-looking men, ignoring the curious gazes of passersby.
Jin Bo glanced around in surprise. "Why are there so many people here?"
"All the internal logistics are here; the laboratory above has even more," Summer Rain explained without looking back. Suddenly feeling amused, she wondered why she was following these panicked faces. With that thought, Summer Rain slowed her pace to walk instead. The three men behind her immediately went on high alert, thinking there was danger ahead. The young swordsman drew two knives without hesitation, glaring suspiciously at both sides, ready to stab anyone who looked wrong.
Noticing their change in demeanor, Summer Rain quickly urged them to relax. "You guys stay outside and wait for me."
"Why?" Xiao Wei raised an eyebrow. "Is there something in there we can't see?"
"Rules," Summer Rain shot him a glance before entering through a corridor on her right. A few steps later, she came upon a wooden door. Next to it was a plaque labeled Experiment Subject, and the door was slightly ajar.
“Shh.” Summer Rain gestured for silence, carefully pushed the door open, and slipped inside. The three of them silently positioned themselves on either side, putting on expressions as blank as corpses while glaring at the passing men and women.
“I mean, the people here are as blind as yours from Daliugou. Can’t even tell a stranger has slipped in?” Xiao Wei couldn’t help but make a snide remark upon seeing the way the clerical staff avoided them like the plague.
“Get lost, who would go digging underground for no reason?” Jin Bo tossed them a couple of sanitary balls and leaned closer to the door, whispering, “Brother Ming, should we go take a look inside?”
Ming Junwei felt a sharp pain in his wrist where his wound was; he had sweated quite a bit while running, and it seeped into the injury, making him wish he could just chop off his hand. Hearing Jin Bo’s question, he turned to glance at the slightly ajar wooden door. The light inside was dim, and there was a table near the entrance. Just as he was about to suggest they go in for a peek, the wooden door suddenly swung open, and Summer Rain emerged holding a stack of papers.
“Hmm?”
“Strange things.” Summer Rain brushed aside Jin Bo’s reaching hand and turned to say, “Let’s talk while we walk; I’ll take you to the Feed Area.”
Seeing her certainty, the three didn’t press further and continued to play their roles as cold-faced guards until they rushed into the Elevator and began questioning her eagerly.
“How many of you were captured?” Summer Rain interrupted their inquiries with a question of her own.
“Let me think.” Ming Junwei started counting on his fingers. There were the three of them, Wheat, An Zheng, and the little boy. As for Su Lan and Song Yao, he wasn’t sure if they had been captured too, but to avoid missing anyone, he included them all: “Eleven.”
“Then it’s possible your people have started moving too,” Summer Rain shrugged her shoulders and handed the papers to them, curious as she said, “They haven’t been destroyed, but there are a few missing.”
