Chapter 171: Racing Against Time 2
The first-level alarm swept through the entire complex like a tidal wave. From the ground units to the underground sections, whether it was armed personnel or internal research staff, everyone felt their hearts leap into their throats the moment the alarm sounded. For them, a first-level alarm was akin to a death knell; after all, this base was not ordinary—if something went wrong, it would be a major disaster.
The piercing alarm rang for a full nine minutes, and everyone sprang into action from top to bottom. It seemed chaotic, but in reality, it was orderly.
Su Lan stood by the window, her eyelids twitching. She knew who the alarm was for; clearly, something had happened below, and Kenny had failed to locate An Zheng. Su Lan sighed deeply, her gaze drifting towards the container housing outside the high walls. Just moments ago, she had been imagining her companions' new lives, but unfortunately, things had not gone as hoped. This dim building offered no room for any beautiful thoughts.
Kenny had not forgotten about Su Lan waiting here; he had sent someone over a few minutes ago to inform her not to worry and to rest easy. Su Lan didn’t ask too many questions; she understood Kenny and his usual way of doing things. Since he hadn’t said much, pressing him for details would only waste her breath.
“Could you please make a trip to the container housing and bring Zeng Yadong over?” Su Lan saw him hesitate and explained, “Kenny knows; there’s no need to worry.”
“Alright, I’ll go now.” The Field Team member initially intended to refuse but realized that Su Lan's relationship with Kenny was special. Since it was just about bringing a girl in, it shouldn’t be a problem, so he agreed.
Once the team member ran off, Su Lan gently closed the door and leaned against the window in her coat, lost in thought. Outside the window, the alarm still echoed, accompanied by fierce winds that whipped up dust and debris.

In the stairwell, Song Yao and his group were undoubtedly the most unfortunate ones; they had just escaped one danger only to fall into another without a moment's respite.
Cao Liang’s group was small and had witnessed the horrific events unfold ahead of them, allowing them to slip away quickly. However, many people had followed Song Yao out; when there were too many people, chaos ensued—especially in such a life-or-death situation without any leadership. Because of this disorder, they couldn’t organize an orderly retreat; they simply rushed out when they saw the quarantine door open. But the stairwell was too small to accommodate dozens of people trying to squeeze in at once. As Song Yao climbed up just two steps, he found himself blocked by Cao Liang and his group. Not to mention those who hadn’t even made it into the stairwell yet—Jinx thought they could buy themselves some time by leaving through the quarantine door. Little did they know that a long line had formed in the stairwell, making it impossible for them to find refuge inside. To make matters worse, before they could assess the situation in White Tower’s stairwell, a horde of bloodthirsty zombies surged in behind them.
Thus, those wanting to escape couldn’t get out, while those trying to enter couldn’t get in. The narrow stairway descended into utter chaos—shouts and curses filled the air as they desperately declared their determination to ascend the stairs to anyone who would listen.
After learning the reasons behind Cao Liang and the others' retreat, Song Yao was in a state of panic. Despite several attempts to stop the chaos, it was futile, and the footsteps above grew closer. Their commotion was too loud to go unnoticed; the narrow staircase amplified every sound. The survivors who had not squeezed through the door were once again clashing with zombies, desperately trying to push into the stairwell. Cao Liang and his group struggled to hold their ground, doing their best to prevent the tide of people behind them from spilling out.
In a moment of desperation, Song Yao made a bold move. The short-haired girl, drenched in blood, checked her magazine and, to the astonishment of her companions, dashed up the stairs. Gunfire erupted almost immediately, drowning out the shouts of the crowd. Cao Liang and Luci panicked and followed without thinking. Just as they took a few steps, two submachine guns were thrown down from above with a loud crash, sparks flying as a figure tumbled down.
At the corner of the staircase, heads were crowded together. Cao Liang and Luci had no time to practice their aim; they gritted their teeth and fired at the corner. A burst of flames briefly illuminated the hallway. The field personnel leading the charge were unable to dodge in time and fell one by one. Before Cao Liang and Luci could advance to disarm them, the figure that had rolled down from the stairs seized an opportunity to pick up a gun and leaned against the corner, firing a volley of bullets up the staircase.
“Yao Yao?!” Luci felt a chill run down her back. The situation was dire; there was no time for questions. She urgently called out as she and Cao Liang rushed over to help the bullet-riddled Song Yao.
The field team members coming down from the safety passage had also been unlucky; after successfully eliminating one wave of prisoners, they were immediately counterattacked by another group. Knowing they couldn’t afford to miss this chance, Song Yao and her companions hurried up the staircase. To avoid ambushes at the exit, Cao Liang shot through the lock on a middle door and shouted before jumping inside. Bull Terrier and Huihui followed closely behind, while another man and woman quickly took advantage of the chaos to disarm a field team member before rushing in after them.
With those blocking their path gone, the pressure on those behind them eased significantly. They weren’t entirely clear on what was happening; however, some sharp-eyed individuals followed Bull Terrier into the passageway. Those still caught up in fighting zombies saw an opening and charged forward without hesitation, completely oblivious to the middle passage as they rushed toward the laboratory's secure door. Although zombies moved slowly, they remained steadfast in their predatory strategy, shambling after the survivors.

In stark contrast, Ming Junwei and his group appeared to be much luckier; they found An Zheng before Kenny did and successfully rescued him.
An Zheng was in poor condition when discovered, completely unconscious. Despite their calls through the glass wall, he showed no signs of response, appearing barely able to breathe.
