Chapter One Hundred Seventy-Three: Racing Against Time 4
“Field Team encountered a group of escapees in the secure passage, and a firefight broke out. Casualties are unknown…”
“A * has gone missing from the juvenile breeding area, and Security is currently investigating…”
“An escape occurred in the * breeding area, the head of the Flesh Fungus Warehouse is dead, and the whereabouts of the escapees are currently unknown…”
“The isolation door at the Testing Ground malfunctioned, and both Experiment Subjects and Zombies have escaped. There may be issues in the Control Room…”
“A large number of Zombies have appeared in the Laboratory, and the research team is organizing a retreat…”
“There has been an unidentified intrusion in the Feed Area, and An Zheng is missing…”
“…”
Every few minutes, a hurried Field Personnel would come to report. The large conference room was silent, with everyone's hearts racing, ears perked up to catch any sounds from the corridor. Black Behemoth watched as Kenny's face changed from red to white, then from white to green, realizing that things had escalated.
Kenny remained silent, his hands crossed over his abdomen, leaning back against the broad chair to rest. The group sat in tense silence, occasionally stealing glances at their boss who had just returned only to be met with chaos. The heads of the affected areas were particularly restless, sweating profusely despite it being late October. They had been eager to personally oversee the situation earlier, but Kenny had not permitted it, merely waving his hand lightly without speaking, leaving them in a state of indecision. The more unresponsive Kenny became, the more anxious the attendees felt; they all knew that there would be a brief calm before the storm, followed by tumultuous waves and thunderous roars.
After a long while, Kenny seemed to come to a realization or perhaps woke from a stupor. He straightened up and rubbed his fingers together. Beside him, Black Behemoth pulled out a cigar box from his pocket, cut open the seal, and handed it to Boss. Kenny frowned slightly, bit into a wooden cigar and took a puff before glancing at his watch. He spoke slowly, “An hour has passed; where are my people?”
“…” Both sides of the round table lowered their heads in unison, looking quite comical.
Kenny smirked slightly, suppressing his inner agitation. “An Zheng is missing, there are escapees, Zombies have invaded the laboratory, and there are malfunctions in the Control Room… Did you all hear that?”
Silence persisted.
“Can someone give me a reasonable explanation?”
“…”
"Very good." Kenny chuckled, turning to Black Behemoth and saying something. Black Man responded with a nod and hurriedly ran out of the conference room. The others shrank back, fearing they might be dragged out by Black Man.
"I'll give you one more hour... finish the handover. In one hour, I don't want to see any of you in this building, understood?" Kenny said in the gentlest tone, enunciating each word clearly, completely ignoring the incredulous gazes around him as he stood up and walked straight to the door.
"Kenny! You can't just fire us like this! I... my team was sent here by your teacher! We hold crucial data!" A man in his forties couldn't help but protest, "Besides, I'm responsible for the Laboratory work. What does all this have to do with my Laboratory?!"
Kenny stopped in his tracks and turned to look at the impassioned man. The people around the round table stared at him in shock, their eyes revealing a hint of sympathy.
"Transfer the data to the new team, then take your people and leave."
"You can't do this! I was sent here to assist you!"
Kenny raised an eyebrow, pulled a shiny silver handgun from his pocket, cocked it with a click, and fired without hesitation.
Bang!
A flash of fire erupted from the muzzle, and a bullet pierced through the man's forehead, spiraling through his skull and embedding itself in the wall behind him. Blood and brain matter splattered across the table.
Kenny ignored the chaos that ensued among the remaining people and strode over to the body on the floor. He reached down and yanked a key from around the dead man's neck, then lightly said, "I can." With that, he left the conference room without looking back, leaving behind a room full of stunned employees.
In the hallway, Caroline hurried after Black Behemoth and ran into Kenny as he was exiting.
"Caroline, take your team to the Laboratory and control the situation," Kenny assigned tasks directly, sending off the still-questioning Foreign Girl.
"Is it done?" Kenny asked.
"Yes, he took people to search layer by layer. As per your instructions, everyone except An Zheng has been eliminated," Black Behemoth replied with a shake of his head. He added, "Aso had someone bring that girl from outside in."
"Don't worry about her." Kenny continued walking without stopping, tucking his handgun away. "You go arrange for the handover. Bring the new team to see me in two hours. By the way, has Wen Tao returned?"
"Not yet, but it should be soon," the Black Man said, wiggling his carrot-like fingers. "Should we notify your teacher?"
"No need, let's leave it as is." Kenny's face showed a hint of impatience as he waved goodbye to the Black Behemoth and hurried away, disappearing into the private passage.

In the Medical Area of Four Stories.
The group led by Cao Liang had managed to escape from the stairwell and were now hiding in an operating room to catch their breath. They were somewhat lucky; not many Zombies had followed them. As they fought their way back, they didn't expend too much effort. The building was too complex for them, with no signs anywhere, and after fleeing for a while, they had no idea where they were. Fortunately, this floor seemed relatively quiet; the fighting in the stairwell hadn't alerted anyone else, allowing them a moment to rest.
Only a few followed Cao Liang's group; more people had headed up the stairs to the top floor, which was the Laboratory's emergency exit. Counting heads, besides Bull Terrier and Huihui, there was one man and one woman who joined later, along with seven others—five men and two women. These individuals had mostly witnessed Cao Liang's group's achievements; although they didn't say anything, their actions clearly indicated they were looking to them for guidance.
The operating room was spacious. After running down the corridor for a while, they stumbled upon it. Everyone felt somewhat numb; no one questioned why there was suddenly an operating room here, nor did anyone care about the strange items soaking in circular dishes under the sterilization lights.
Four men volunteered to guard the door of the operating room while the others rested behind the isolation door. They were all exhausted and injured from their escape and had no strength left to speak. The operating room, filled with the smell of disinfectant, fell into silence, broken only by uneven breathing and pairs of surprised, questioning eyes.
These gazes were directed at Song Yao. Not only did the Survivors look at her strangely, but even Cao Liang and Luci struggled to suppress their shock and doubt.
With so many people present, Cao Liang couldn't ask anything directly; he had to remain vigilant about any movements outside while also keeping an eye on those inside the operating room. Luci's eyes glistened with tears as she took some cotton and clean water from the sterilization cabinet and dampened it to wipe Song Yao's body. Song Yao didn't refuse; she held Luci's trembling hand gently and said softly, "It's okay."
As soon as she spoke, Luci's tears began to flow uncontrollably. She stifled her sobs while cleaning the blood off Song Yao's face, revealing her delicate features. Huihui had wanted to help but couldn't muster the courage; even Bull Terrier stood there in shock. The dim light in the operating room flickered softly.
