Chapter 256: Hearing Your Voice 0

At this moment, the advance team had already rounded the corner of the staircase. They just needed to push forward to reach the safety door on the lower level. Song Yao's thought was to retreat into the floor for a moment; otherwise, if they kept fighting like this, they would eventually be done for. However, the Field Personnel misunderstood Song Yao's intention. He was completely in awe because this short-haired girl was far more courageous than he was! Hearing Song Yao's order, the Field Personnel stood up and pointed toward the lower staircase, shouting at the top of his lungs, "Blow it up!!" 0

The shout was powerful enough, though it couldn't drown out the roaring tide of Zombies. Nevertheless, the entire desperate squad heard it clearly. Including Jiang He, Jones, and Brother Feng, as soon as they heard the Field Personnel's furious roar, they glanced in the direction of the sound. In that instant, several dark figures shot out from their peripheral vision. Looking closer, more than a dozen black objects flew toward the end of the lower staircase. Many collided with the wall and bounced back down to the lower stairs. 0

Everyone was stunned. Seeing a wave of grenades flying out together caused the frontline fighters to slow down for a moment. Before anyone could regain their senses, another thunderous explosion erupted. More than a dozen grenades detonated simultaneously, engulfing the entire staircase in flames and shockwaves in an instant, sweeping through the horde of Zombies like a tidal wave. At that moment when the air pressure surged, Jiang He felt a strong shake once again. He only had time to glance at Song Yao among the crowd before being thrown away by the rolling shockwave. 0

Everything spun around him as the smell of sulfur mixed with smoke filled his nostrils. Then came a rush of cold wind, and the scene before him shifted from dim to bright. Jiang He knew that tragedy was repeating itself; another explosion had rocked the staircase... and unfortunately for him, he had been pushed out by the shockwave. He also realized that they hadn't fought their way down to a floor where they could jump to safety, which meant he would be falling from a height of a hundred meters into a sea of waiting Zombies below. 0

A jumble of chaotic thoughts raced through his mind for just a moment because reality demanded that his body keep pace with his thoughts. The instant he felt the cold wind brush against him, his vision cleared up as well. Jiang He narrowly escaped disaster once again; he did not fall directly from high above. However, in reality, it was hardly different from falling; it was just a matter of time. 0

Jiang He wasn't sure how the last explosion had happened, but this time he saw clearly that it was caused by those RCA Field Operations personnel. He still didn't know that those Field Personnel were following Song Yao's orders. In any case, more than ten grenades exploded simultaneously, shredding many Zombies in the stairwell and demolishing it once again while blowing out half of an outer wall. 0

Fortunately, this time the explosion point wasn't at the edge of the outer wall, so it didn't shatter and collapse. The entire outer wall detached from the building; rebar mixed within it and metal frames were pulled away from the surface like buttons popping off. With a series of clattering sounds, countless fixed expansion screws were torn loose as if swatted away by a giant fly extending out from the building at an angle. And there hung Jiang He along with three other lucky Field Personnel, suspended between bending rebar as they gently swayed high above. 0

The dizziness brought on by the explosion lasted for a while. Jiang He lay face down on the rebar mesh, his eyes took quite some time to focus before he caught sight of something that nearly made him faint. 0

High! Too high!! Fear of heights!!! 0

Jiang He's legs turned to jelly at that moment; beneath him was only a layer of rebar mesh. The glass layer on the metal frame above had shattered, leaving only square frames connecting at both ends with no protective barrier whatsoever. Through the rebar mesh, Jiang He saw a snow-white ground... and countless Zombies below. The "fly swatter" continued to sway; half of the heavy wall at its end could collapse at any moment and snap this stretched rebar mesh and outer frame over ten meters long—both Jiang He and the other three were in imminent danger. 0

The first to stand up was a mustached Field Personnel who had evidently experienced a brief scare after recovering from dizziness due to the explosion. However, fortune favored them in adversity; fear faded away as he gathered his courage and stood upright. Jiang He and the other two followed suit but didn’t dare fully stand; they crawled or sat instead. They all moved cautiously because even their slightest movements could cause the rebar mesh to collapse. The four survivors looked up nervously at where part of the outer wall had fallen away; there was an opening where smoke billowed outwards. They had descended over ten meters on this rebar frame but couldn’t see what was happening at that opening or how many floors had collapsed in the stairwell or where everyone else had fallen to. 0

Jiang He stared blankly for a long time, gradually coming to his senses as his eyes fixated on the massive gash in the outer wall, hoping to hear that familiar call once more. Yet, no one heard his silent plea; the area shrouded in thick smoke remained eerily silent, perhaps there were sounds, but they were drowned out by the howling wind. 0

Above him, there was no movement, but below, things were stirring again. 0

It was gunfire. 0

Jiang He’s mind went completely blank as he continued to stare, witnessing flashes of fire flickering in the snow and the surging horde moving like a tide. The location of the firelight was swallowed by the horde. The three Field Personnel stood there without a word, seemingly frozen in shock, staring blankly at the ground, utterly motionless. 0

“Yao Yao?” Jiang He called softly, the biting wind and snow mercilessly filling his mouth. His voice was faint, unsure of who he was asking—perhaps just himself. The gunfire moments ago defied logic; how could a living person survive a fall from a hundred meters high through the breach in the wall? Only he and Song Yao, as Experiment Subjects who had taken drugs, might have tougher lives. Suspended in mid-air, could the shooter be… Yao Yao? 0

“Impossible.” Jiang He quickly dismissed that thought, feeling himself on the brink of losing control as he struggled to rein himself in. One of the Field Personnel nearby noticed his distress and assumed he was scared by their current predicament, offering reassurance: “Brother, don’t panic. Just relax.” 0

“No, it can’t be.” Jiang He ignored the Field Personnel's kindness, desperately searching for other explanations to prove his judgment wrong. 0

“Maybe… maybe there were too many zombies below, and those who fell really didn’t die, so they fired? Yes, that must be it.” Jiang He muttered to himself as he pushed himself up with his arms. Since it wasn’t Song Yao down there, she must still be upstairs; he needed to find her. 0

Jiang He stood up, his legs trembling beneath him. The three Field Personnel glanced at him with tense expressions. 0

From a distance, one with a handlebar mustache waved his hand and shouted, “Don’t move! Stay steady!” 0

Jiang He lifted his leg but didn’t move; it wasn’t obedience but rather an inability to muster strength. Even if he had energy in his legs, returning to the building seemed unrealistic. The exposed rebar and outer framework of the collapsed wall stretched over ten meters; one end clung tightly to the outer wall while the other dangled from the shattered structure. The rebar formed a precarious Rainbow Bridge; even standing still made it sway dangerously, let alone trying to walk back along it. The three Field Personnel had undoubtedly tried before but found no solution and were left stranded to reconsider their options. 0
