The first rain of spring arrived unexpectedly, shedding the breath of a former lover and transforming into a long-suffering woman alone in her chamber. It came with fierce winds and rumbling thunder, pouring down as if to vent its frustrations, continuing for three days without any sign of clearing. 0

Song Jiu pulled back the curtains and glanced at the leaden sky, helplessly lighting a candle. She had hoped to relax during the rainy weather with some bed rest, but the thick clouds remained heavy, blocking out the light completely. The entire city seemed to be covered by a curtain, shrouded in gray; it was clearly the time for morning sunshine, yet the sky appeared as if it were dusk. 0

Downstairs was empty, with hardly anyone around. This kind of weather made outdoor work impossible. A few people braved the rain to reinforce the greenhouse, while the canvas flapped as it settled into bed. 0

“Hmm,” Song Jiu peeked outside and saw no one in the corridor. 0

“I want to change rooms. Guli stole my blanket and I’m freezing,” Dream Fan curled up into a ball, only her little head visible as she looked pitifully at Song Jiu and complained, “Or give me a standard room so we can sleep separately.” 0

Song Jiu chuckled, pulling back the covers and climbing in beside her. “Didn’t you two sleep together by the river?” 0

“It wasn’t cold then,” Dream Fan said as she instinctively snuggled closer for warmth. “These past few days have been damp and chilly in here. I’ve added two more blankets, but when I woke up, I saw they were just piled on top of me.” 0

“Come sleep with me,” Song Jiu found her words amusing and closed the window. Taking a puff from her cigarette, she said, “I have a big bed here; there’s plenty of room for you to roll around.” 0

“No way! If someone sees us, they’ll think we’re in some kind of relationship,” Dream Fan pouted and rubbed her head against Song Jiu’s belly. “Where’s Luo Yu? I haven’t seen her these past couple of days.” 0

“She’s at KTV with Sister Jia,” Song Jiu yawned while stroking Dream Fan’s smooth back and laughed, “Why should we care what others think about our relationship?” 0

“You’re the wise and mighty Brother Jiu; you deserve a calm girl like Effie or a capable partner like Luo Yu.” Dream Fan’s drowsiness hadn’t faded yet; after a moment of resting her head, she began to doze off. 0

“Stop rambling and go to sleep,” Song Jiu said as she noticed Dream Fan succumbing to sleepiness. She tucked her in more snugly before putting on her clothes and leaving the room. 0

The hotel floors were dimly lit, with all the doors tightly closed as guests enjoyed the rare leisure of a rainy day. Outside, heavy rain poured down, splashing everywhere, while the drainage ditches on either side flowed steadily, with fine sand and gravel being washed away into small channels, the water swirling vigorously. Smoke rose from the restaurant, and Song Jiu caught a strange smell. Frowning, he sniffed around but couldn't find the source. Just then, his stomach growled, reminding him that there had been some issues with the food lately, prompting him to ask for help. "Ming Ge has already gone to the kitchen; come take a look with me. I don't really know much about farming either," he said after gesturing for a while. 0

"Alright, I'll go with you," Yinuo replied, his expression turning serious. The Vegetable Greenhouse wasn't large, but it was essential for Roundabout's livelihood; without this greenhouse, over a hundred people would struggle to find vegetables and fruits. They had encountered problems when they first started planting, but through trial and error and by exchanging various books on greenhouse cultivation, they had figured out a method that should work without any major issues. 0

Just as they were about to leave, a commotion erupted nearby. Turning around, they saw Luci supporting a middle-aged man who was taking medication; his face was flushed and he was gasping for breath. Luci looked a bit flustered while Doctor Yu hurried over. Both seemed unable to maintain control as the middle-aged man's eyes widened in panic; he was sweating profusely and appeared to be struggling to breathe as if his chest were filled with a blower. 0

"Get oxygen," Doctor Yu instructed urgently. A few young assistants rushed out of the room to find a respirator. 0

Song Jiu and Yinuo stood frozen for a moment, wanting to help but unsure how. The middle-aged man's reddened face quickly turned pale; his lips turned blue as he coughed violently while struggling to breathe. He coughed up pinkish frothy sputum and clutched Song Jiu's arm tightly, like a drowning person grasping at a lifeline, his bulging eyes fixed on them in desperation. Doctor Yu ordered them to help him sit up and let his legs dangle down, but the man's breathing became increasingly rapid—he exhaled more than he inhaled, his body stiffening. 0

"Doctor Yu, what’s wrong with him?" Luci asked helplessly as other patients in the ward began to panic and gathered around. 0

"Pulmonary Edema," Doctor Yu replied solemnly. Before he finished speaking, the middle-aged man's struggles ceased abruptly; the hand gripping Song Jiu's arm fell limp and hung by his side. 0

Song Jiu's face changed dramatically as he quickly checked for the man's breath. Doctor Yu sighed heavily and shook his head sadly as he stepped away from the crowd that had gathered around them. 0
