Before entering the tunnel, the sky was still ablaze with fiery hues, but after emerging from it, darkness enveloped the surroundings completely.
Luo Yu and Luci were the first to leave the tunnel. After confirming that the tunnel's exit was temporarily safe, they paused to catch their breath while waiting for the rest of the group. Luci unscrewed her water bottle and handed it to a few people to quench their thirst. Glancing around in the dim moonlight, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness; only five people had managed to escape alongside them, all of whom were Young Ladies. Among them were two Roundabout natives, while the other three seemed unfamiliar, likely brought by Wu Wentao.
Yuan An was still shaken, recalling the intense gunfire moments ago. "Won't shooting attract more Zombies?" she exclaimed in surprise.
"It doesn't matter anymore," Luci replied, casting a glance at the others who were still trembling with fear. "We can’t save everyone."
"Ah, you mean..." Yuan An paused, then quickly realized what Luci was implying. Her gaze softened as she secretly looked at the five girls who had followed them out, swallowing the latter part of her sentence.
Jiao Ziqian furrowed her brow; the vigorous running had taken a toll on her. The healing of her injuries was painfully slow—though they weren't life-threatening, wounds were still wounds and would hurt regardless.
"Don't worry, Jiu Jiu is behind us; she’ll be fine," Luo Yu said, sensing Jiao Ziqian's concern. She smiled gently and added in a low voice, "With just those few people, there shouldn't be any problems."
"Mm." Jiao Ziqian nodded but still wore a serious expression.
Luo Yu sighed helplessly, feeling an unusual sensation rise within her. Watching Jiao Ziqian and Ying Dou Dou holding hands along the way was indeed a pleasant sight, but inevitably, Jiao Ziqian could no longer be as fearless as before. Perhaps this was what Wu Wentao had always criticized—the entanglements that came with emotions. For those like them who lived on the edge, feelings had no place in their dictionary; once someone or something tied them down, it meant doom. As they had seen earlier, one misstep could lead to disaster for all of them.
Song Yao fell silent and released her grip on her brother's ear with a resigned sigh. She understood that this was an emergency situation; however, Wu Wentao's actions and Song Jiu's decisions at that moment seemed too synchronized. Even if it hadn't been pre-discussed, there must have been some unspoken agreement between them. Logically speaking, abandoning burdens was correct, but on a personal level, Song Yao wished Song Jiu wouldn't be so cold-hearted. In contrast, Ming Junwei's ruthlessness was only directed at enemies; he had always been particularly tolerant towards Roundabout tribes. It was hard to say who was right or wrong; for Song Yao, she clearly preferred Ming Junwei's way of handling things.
"Forget it." Song Yao shook her head with a bitter smile. Song Jiu wasn't Ming Junwei nor Ginger River; circumstances were different, and she couldn't expect too much. Seeing Song Jiu's concerned gaze made her reluctant to say more; she squeezed his hand and said softly, "You're right; I trust you."
Two hours later, ahead of them, Wu Wentao finally found a suitable resting spot. He waved his hand from a distance and pointed to a sunken area beside the road where they could stop.
"Let’s take a break here; we need to keep moving while it's still dark," Wu Wentao stated firmly without giving anyone a chance to relax. "This place isn't suitable for overnight stays."
The group fell silent but figured resting was better than continuing on without pause. They cleared away some scattered weeds and made a flat area to sit down with their bedding spread out beneath them.
"It's not a solution to keep rushing," Song Jiu said, looking at the exhausted group. He felt a bit troubled; although the sky was dim, it was still not even ten o'clock. They had only rested for an hour at the color steel house when they left the city, and since then, they had hardly stopped. After exerting themselves in the tunnel just now, they were indeed struggling to keep going.
"You decide," Wu Wentao replied without arguing, shrugging his shoulders as he sat down on the roadside barrier. He tapped on the plaster traffic police statue beside him and said, "There's still two hundred kilometers to the nearest town. Do you really think we can sleep for a night and make it there before nightfall tomorrow?"
"We need to get into the city," Song Jiu frowned and took the map from Fang Fei. Using the light from his lighter, he glanced at their position and asked in confusion, "What do you mean by a prefecture-level city?"
"With so few people around, one big truck can cover it all," Wu Wentao waved his hand dismissively, accepting the cigarette Song Jiu offered. He smacked his lips and added, "We’re in a hurry; the faster we go, the better."
"What are you worried about?" Song Jiu lit his cigarette and took a puff, feeling increasingly uneasy. Wu Wentao had been quiet throughout their journey, but whenever he spoke, he provided compelling reasons that were hard to refuse. Some of Song Jiu's suggestions were accepted while others were rejected for various reasons. Yet Wu Wentao never pressed further; it always seemed like he was casually mentioning things. However, Song Jiu felt that Wu Wentao was concerned about something specific; every suggestion revolved around getting into the city quickly.
"Sigh, what can I say to you all?" Wu Wentao sighed heavily, falling silent for a moment before asking, "Do you think if they want to pursue us, we can escape?"
"Her?" Song Jiu was even more baffled. He acknowledged that the Foreign Horse was formidable, but there had to be limits. The Roundabout had already been blown up; how could she possibly know where the remaining group was headed?
Wu Wentao pointed to his head with a disappointed expression and said, "That girl named Yinuo has been captured by her. Once Kenny finds out about Antibody, we will soon be targeted."
"That’s unlikely. Didn’t you say that the Blonde Woman captures people for her own preferences?" Song Jiu frowned as he recalled this and hesitated before saying, "Besides, Yinuo doesn’t know our current situation; the Blonde Woman has no idea about you and Antibody either."
"You can't hide fire with paper." Wu Wentao's deep-seated fear of Kenny could not be erased. Even though what Song Jiu said made sense, he still couldn't let it go and sighed, "You don't understand them."
Song Jiu chose not to argue further on this matter; he roughly understood Wu Wentao's point. Everything was uncertain now, and discussing it would be a complete waste of time. The two fell silent for a while until Song Jiu cleared his throat and asked, "Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure," Wu Wentao glanced at him and nodded hesitantly.
"Why did you leave your original boss?" Song Jiu had been curious about this for a long time, especially since he heard that the Blonde Woman used to be his partner. It puzzled him why Wu Wentao would turn against her.
Wu Wentao's expression froze; it seemed he hadn't expected such a sudden question from him. His face turned somewhat strange.
"Forget it if you don't want to say anything," Song Jiu said as he stood up and waved his hand. "I was just asking out of curiosity."
"Actually, it's nothing much, just hard to explain," Wu Wentao replied with a bitter smile, sighing as he jumped off the railing. He patted Song Jiu on the back and added, "Let's talk about it later, after we get to the island."
Song Jiu shrugged, having only been curious in the first place. Since it was inconvenient to discuss, he let it go.
"Make sure to rest up," Wu Wentao said, his worries easing a bit after their casual chat. He glanced at his watch and generously declared, "Let's take another half hour before we head out."
"Hey, what's that?"
Before Wu Wentao could finish his sentence, the young man on lookout suddenly exclaimed in surprise, pointing towards the road they had come from. "Quick, look!"
Song Jiu and the others' expressions changed instantly. They thought to themselves, could it be true? Was the Blonde Woman really that powerful? Luo Yu and Song Yao quickly got up to join him. The group hid behind the barrier and looked in the direction the young man was pointing.
On the desolate National Highway shrouded in deep night, a beam of bright searchlights shot out from afar, racing towards them along the undulating road.
