Qianqian heard voices outside the window and quietly closed Dai Wei's door. As she stepped out, she saw a group of people gathering in the courtyard.
"What’s going on?" Cao Zheng, having also heard the commotion, followed her out. The late-night mountain camp was filled with a tense atmosphere.
"Xiao Meng and the others are back," Qixi said, pinching him lightly to signal him to keep quiet. She pointed to a tall beauty standing out among the crowd and added, "They just returned not long ago, and it seems something happened."
"What is he getting involved in now?" Cao Zheng shook his head, sighing. Yang Xiaomeng was talking to the leader of the group, and judging by his expression, it looked like they were on the same side.
"You should go listen in. Xiao Meng is still our friend; we need to look out for him," Qianqian said softly. Although she was quite far away, she could see the helplessness on Yang Xiaomeng's face; clearly, he was reluctant to be mixed up with these thugs.
Cao Zheng pretended he didn’t want to get involved, but his feet betrayed him as he hesitated for a moment before steeling himself to approach.
"Xiao Meng, what’s going on?" Cao Zheng deliberately avoided looking at the man named Wu Wentao, who gave off an uncomfortable vibe. In contrast, the young man with many questions seemed easier to talk to.
Yang Xiaomeng seemed to see a savior in him and hurriedly ran to his side, pushing Cao Zheng into the center of the crowd like a star surrounded by planets. Without waiting for Cao Zheng to ask anything, he introduced him proudly: "Dun dun dun! Let me introduce you all! Coach Cao, our club's senior team leader—capable of anything from climbing mountains to sailing seas! A nationally certified senior outdoor coach and climbing instructor, a guest lecturer at an officially designated outdoor training center. With ten years of experience, he excels at jet skiing, operating excavators, and paragliding. He once attempted a trek across the Lob Nor but didn’t succeed. In short, he is undoubtedly the right choice—both in image and ability—far surpassing me!"
"Excuse me?" Cao Zheng was taken aback.
Wu Wentao looked at Song Yao, who then exchanged glances with Song Jiu. They all turned their gazes toward Cao Zheng with intense eyes.
The situation regarding the graduate students and Yuan An could no longer be concealed. Based on their earlier speculations on the road, it was highly likely they had encountered forces from the Gobi Desert again. Regardless of whether their assumptions were correct or not, they needed to prepare thoroughly for an advance into the Industrial Park. Only a few people knew about RCA's situation; while others might not understand what kind of organization it was, recalling the actions of the blonde woman before made it clear that no extensive mobilization was needed—people already had a clear standard in mind.
Wu Wentao had been away from the organization for too long and couldn’t guess specific details about that park. Based on previous experimental sites' specifications, he could only provide rough reference suggestions. He believed that given their current team's combat capability, it would be inappropriate to confront them head-on. They had limited firearms available while Kenny's men were well-armed—especially for those conducting experimental research in that area where armed security forces were definitely beyond their current capacity to contend with.
The hypothetical enemy was strong; their team was vastly outmatched. Since they couldn’t confront them directly, they had to find ways to engage in guerrilla tactics. Thus, the importance of having guides became self-evident.
Yang Xiaomeng had been to the Industrial Park before; although it was half a year ago, for outdoor enthusiasts who spent most of their time traversing rainforests and mountains, environmental memory wouldn’t differ much. Moreover, given that there were no reconstruction plans for cities after the disaster, buildings from half a year ago would have mostly turned into ruins without any new skyscrapers rising up to obstruct their view.
Guiding was one aspect; if necessary, they would also need to provide support in other areas—such as extraction.
Song Jiu and Jin Bo counted heads and included Chef Jia and Pockmarked Girl in their tally. Currently, only seventeen people from their entire team were fit for frontline action, and their skill levels varied greatly compared to RCA's Field Duty mercenaries—the gap between them was glaringly obvious. They had no choice; two missing individuals were comrades—alive or dead; they needed answers regardless of conditions. So Song Jiu came up with a clever idea.
He had Yang Xiaomeng sketch a rough topographical map of the Industrial Park based on memory, and compared it with the city map that Luci had found. From this, he circled several buildings in the Industrial Zone that seemed to be the most likely candidates, then marked the roads connecting several Industrial Zones, assigning teams accordingly. Song Jiu's idea was simple yet risky; their primary goal was to find people, and before confirming their targets, they had to find a way to avoid direct contact with them.
Thus, High Mobility became the primary principle, making armed forces seem somewhat optional.
The Garrison was only a ten-minute drive from the mountain tunnel, and the fuel tank had enough oil to create a disposable tank squad. At this moment, they did not need to look for larger vehicles; as long as they could move, that was sufficient. Song Jiu divided more than a dozen people into six groups, which meant they would need five vehicles for transportation. Once the six groups were assembled, they rushed to the urban area as quickly as possible and then dispersed outside the opponent's sphere of influence, proceeding in batches along the marked routes with the aim of storming into the park within the same time frame.
There were three suspicious buildings circled: two were conventional Industrial Zones—Life Sciences Research Institute and IT Industrial Park—whose area and construction plans met the requirements for research facilities. The third was two office buildings that used to be a branch base of a Domestic Pharmaceutical Company, complete with small processing factories and relatively well-equipped facilities. The three locations formed a triangular shape; the Pharmaceutical Factory branch was near Life Sciences Park, while IT Industrial Park was relatively farther away but accessible via two different routes.
Song Jiu's plan was straightforward: after the six groups reached the park, they could quickly traverse using vehicle speed while searching for these three locations. Meanwhile, other team members could observe the park's environment. If they attracted attention from the other side, other groups could provide support as quickly as possible. The risk was also evident; effective real-time communication between teams was impossible, making coordination challenging. In many cases, they would have to rely on mutual understanding and luck.
Six groups would target three locations; upon arrival, they would quickly advance. If there were no findings, they would retreat; if they stumbled upon something useful, they would signal—speed was key.
Surprisingly, Wu Wentao did not refute Song Jiu's plan. These two often argued during their journey; it seemed their working styles were entirely opposite—either one denied the other or vice versa—rarely reaching an agreement on any issue. This time, however, Song Yao intended for Wu Wentao to come up with ideas; knowing oneself and one's enemy ensures victory in every battle. As a former colleague, Wu Wentao's experience should be richer than theirs. Yet he offered no constructive suggestions and instead praised Song Jiu's plan before readily agreeing.
Luci remained skeptical, wondering if he felt that facing off against their former boss had little chance of success and thus decided to throw caution to the wind.
As if sensing their doubts, Wu Wentao rubbed his stiff face and sighed, "Besides Song Jiu's method, there are actually two other options."
Everyone's eyes lit up as they awaited his elaboration.
Wu Wentao chuckled self-deprecatingly and said, "First, gather over fifty armed personnel without making any plans—just swagger in. If anyone gets in your way, kill them; if corpses block your path, clear them out. Second, give me a T90 main battle tank; you all wait outside until you hear a few loud booms before coming in to find people."
The group stared at him in disbelief as dozens of sanitary balls flew out simultaneously.
"So," Wu Wentao shrugged helplessly and said, "let's go with what Song Jiu suggested: surprise tactics, High Mobility—both offensive and defensive. In this situation, it's indeed a good method. If you must heed my advice, then just one point: eliminate everyone except our own people whenever you have the chance."
"I don't understand," Wu Wentao scanned everyone's expressions and patiently explained: "If that area is an experimental zone, besides Armed Personnel, you will encounter many Internal Staff who seem harmless. I mean everyone—including those internal staff."
"Is it necessary?" Luci frowned slightly. The reason they managed to escape from the underground base years ago was largely due to Summer Rain's assistance. Without her help, it remained uncertain whether they could have escaped safely.
"Yes." Wu Wentao said with utmost certainty, repeatedly emphasizing, "Regardless of gender, as long as they appear within your line of sight and you have the opportunity to kill them. If you can't do that, then don't talk about saving anyone; just find a crooked tree and hang yourself from the southeast branch." Noticing some people still hesitating, Wu Wentao sighed and added, "Let me put it this way: Armed Personnel might kill you during the crossfire, while those internal researchers will make your life worse than death in the laboratory. Do you understand?"
"I understand." Song Yao and Luci replied in unison, without hesitation.
Wu Wentao's words struck a chord with them; while others might not grasp the gravity of the situation, they certainly did. Even in death, they absolutely did not want to wake up in a strange place filled with the smell of disinfectant.
The main combat team had finished their discussion, but Cao Zheng, who had been betrayed by Yang Xiaomeng, was still confused. It seemed like none of this had anything to do with him. Just as he was about to feel relieved, a chill ran down his back. He looked up to find that everyone's gaze was fixed on him.
"What... what do you want?"
"I need your help." Song Jiu cut straight to the point. "Only you have been to the Industrial Zone; I need you to be our guide."
"Impossible." Cao Zheng was suddenly alarmed and immediately rejected the invitation. What kind of joke was this? Did he think they were close? From their tone, it was clear these people were planning to kill or be killed; only a fool would wade into such murky waters.
Song Jiu sighed and turned his gaze toward Yang Xiaomeng. "How about this: as an exchange, if you help us, once we succeed, I'll give you the Antibody Vaccine for the Infected Virus. What do you think? This deal isn't a loss."
