Wu Wentao was on his way to the Pharmaceutical Factory, and although he could hear the continuous gunfire behind him, he had no time to pay attention to it. For someone as seasoned as him, with allies drawing fire, his priority was to reach his destination as quickly as possible. If he let his emotions take over and jumped into the fray, it would undoubtedly disrupt the entire plan.
The two young women followed his instructions without hesitation—one focused on navigating with the map while the other concentrated on driving, completely tuning out the sounds of gunfire.
Chef Jia and Luci shared the same mindset. They managed to steer clear of the chaos at Ximen, worried but not rushing to provide assistance. This was largely thanks to Song Jiu's earlier advice. Ironically, despite Song Jiu's repeated warnings not to let anything interrupt their progress, he was the first to encounter resistance. The disparity in power was evident, and they were now closely pursued while others anxiously listened to the gunfire but continued along their predetermined route without deviation.
Family ties proved reliable; if not for Song Yao's sudden arrival, he and Luo Yu would likely have already faced dire consequences.
The three abandoned their vehicle and rushed into a large courtyard. The electric gate was tightly shut, barely able to withstand the approach of a Jinbei Car. In the courtyard stood two low buildings side by side, with a sealed revolving door leading into a dimly lit interior.
"Let's hide for now. I think Us has drawn all the fire towards them," Song Jiu said, feeling frustrated with nowhere to vent his grievances. It was bad enough that they were fleeing in disarray; they had also lost a young man—truly a mission gone awry.
Three Jinbei vehicles crashed through the electric gate. Not daring to delay any longer, Song Jiu and his companions fired a few shots in a show of bravado before tearing down the sealed door and rushing into the dark hall. The marble floor was covered in a thick layer of dust that kicked up into their faces as they ran, making it hard to breathe. Song Yao led the way, scanning the dimly lit corners of the hall for an emergency exit. Without time to check anything else, they hurried forward and used their empty magazines to jam the door shut behind them.
"Let’s keep our word; no venting frustrations," they said as they restrained three individuals from the building, applying duct tape over their mouths and binding their hands before stuffing them into a Golden Cup Van. Throughout this process, there was no conversation; they started the vehicle and turned back.
Seated in the back row, the three exchanged glances. It seemed that the gunmen had little interest in them; after capturing them, their vigilance relaxed. They returned to where they had previously exchanged fire after assessing damages and casualties before setting off again along a route that Song Jiu had mapped out.
Song Yao's eyes lit up; this road appeared to lead directly to the Pharmaceutical Factory.
The Industrial Park returned to calm as those who stirred up trouble were apprehended while other fugitives continued fighting their own battles.
Wu Wentao and Jin Bo had been getting along peacefully, unable to encounter any Zombies, let alone armed thugs. Listening to the sound of gunfire in the background, these two groups had already searched the Life Sciences Park and the IT Industrial Park, finding nothing, and were now heading towards the Pharmaceutical Factory.
In contrast to Song Jiu, who was facing tough opponents, Jiao Ziqian's luck was off the charts.
Jiao Ziqian instructed Fang Fei to drive over, eager for a direct confrontation. However, the opposing team chose to retreat without engaging. Before Chang'an Benben could get within shooting range, the enemy's Golden Cup Van quickly backed away, moving faster than if it had approached head-on. It reversed a considerable distance before turning sharply and speeding away, completely ignoring the advancing Chang'an Benben.
"Should we chase them?" Ying Dou Dou asked in disbelief. She had imagined various scenarios before arriving—intense battles and dangerous pursuits—but what unfolded was utterly unexpected. They finally encountered a group of enemies, only for them to flee.
"Forget about chasing; let's focus on our mission," Fang Fei said, fearing that Jiao Ziqian might get overly excited. She decisively changed direction and checked the map for the nearest location, heading towards the Life Sciences Park. This was the downside of poor communication; they had wasted some time. Upon reaching the Life Sciences Park, they discovered tire tracks and a broken electric gate. Jiao Ziqian and Ying Dou Dou got out to explore but found nothing, just like Wu Wentao had reported.
"Where to next? IT Industrial Park or Pharmaceutical Factory?" Jiao Ziqian casually asked before suddenly murmuring, "It seems like the gunfire has stopped."
"They must have increased their distance," Ying Dou Dou replied, having been attentive to the sounds around them. They had wasted some time on their way back; the gunfire had faded several minutes ago. They all remembered Song Jiu's warning and assumed that the squad encountering enemy fire had moved out of shooting range, completely unaware that one of their leaders had already surrendered.
"Let's go to the Pharmaceutical Factory; Sister Jia's location is closer to it," Fang Fei said as she closed the map, identified their direction, and released the handbrake.
As several teams redirected their Cabin vehicles towards their final destination, a black Nissan was already parked along the Tree-Lined Path behind the Pharmaceutical Factory.
Luci rolled down the car window and gazed at the white building behind the dense treetops, a flicker of discovery gleaming in her eyes. The man and woman in the car with her sighed in relief; they never expected that despite taking a longer route, they would be the first to find the Experimental Site. From an exterior perspective, this sizable Pharmaceutical Factory seemed no different from other buildings. However, compared to those lifeless structures, the faint glimmers of light here stood out distinctly.
"Frosted glass," Oil Paint Youth said as he stared at a window for a long time before speculating, "It looks like there's light coming from inside."
"Yeah, it's hard to notice unless you look closely, but it's quite obvious at night," Luci smiled slightly as she handed over their only Rifle to the young man. "You two wait here; I'll go take a look inside."
The girl in the back seat was momentarily stunned.
"Well, the gunfire has stopped. The others should be arriving soon. You two stay here to meet them while I check the perimeter. We'll regroup here shortly." Luci's confident demeanor left no room for argument, and her reasoning made sense. The two nodded without further protest, reminding her to be careful. They quietly drove the small car out from under the trees and into a nearby alley, which provided a clear view of the wide road in front of the Pharmaceutical Factory.
Taking advantage of the night, Luci ran towards the two-meter-high wall, glancing around before rolling up her sleeves and climbing up along the street trees. Her agile movements were in stark contrast to her delicate appearance.
The two remaining in the car only saw the tree canopy sway slightly before a figure swiftly dropped down and vanished from sight.
