After listening to Wu Wentao's words, Song Yao and Luo Yu's expressions softened slightly, but at the same time, a deeper confusion surged in their hearts.
"I don't quite understand," Song Yao said, feeling a bit lost. What Wu Wentao was trying to express was unclear.
Wu Wentao also seemed dissatisfied with his previous explanation, but for a moment, he couldn't find more suitable words. He frowned and thought for a long time before quietly saying, "This isn't a small matter. Song Jiu's memory shouldn't be this poor, right?"
" Jiu Jiu has always had a good memory," Luo Yu chimed in, nodding. "And how could he possibly forget something like this?"
"So the problem lies here," Wu Wentao said with some helplessness, spreading his hands. "He claims he didn't drink. I observed him; he seemed clear-headed and didn't look like he was joking."
Song Yao vaguely sensed something was off. With Wu Wentao's personality, he wouldn't be so concerned unless it was genuinely important.
Wu Wentao sighed, extinguishing his cigarette. "For now, let's not show it. I feel like he himself doesn't realize anything is wrong. Let's first land on the island; keep an eye on him these next couple of days. The Establishment should have medical resources; we need to find a way to get him checked out."
Luo Yu frowned slightly. Combining Wu Wentao's description, she recalled some strange occurrences and hesitated before saying, "It seems that Jiu Jiu hasn't been in the Sleeper Cabin these past few nights."
"Really?" Wu Wentao and Song Yao's expressions changed slightly as they questioned, "Not there?"
"Yes, yesterday Natalia went to find Fang Fei and said she wanted to be with us because she was alone at night," Luo Yu shrugged, her gaze filled with confusion as she murmured, "We thought something had happened between her and Jiu Jiu. She said Jiu Jiu wasn't around at night and didn't know where he went. Last night, Xiao Meng and I went to the Sleeper Cabin to look for him, but we really didn't see anyone."
"I thought he was with you," Song Yao said nervously. Since their departure, everything had been calm; everyone had been quietly preparing for whatever might happen after landing on the island and hadn't paid much attention to Song Jiu.
"No, I could see him during the day," Wu Wentao frowned in thought before suddenly standing up. "Let's go check."
"Where to?"
"I just told him to go back and rest."
The three stood in front of Song Jiu's Sleeper Cabin, knocking for a while, but no one answered.
Luo Yu leaned close to the cabin door, holding his breath to listen, his expression gradually changing. "There's no sound inside."
"Step aside." Wu Wentao gestured for Luo Yu to move aside, then suddenly slammed into the door with a loud thud. The high-quality cabin door shook under the force. His expression was somewhat strange, a mix of amusement and confusion, as he occasionally shook his head lightly, raising his left hand slightly, a small square object spinning on his fingertip.
Wu Wentao paused, feeling greatly puzzled. It didn't make sense for Song Jiu to be sleepwalking; he had never heard of someone sleepwalking with their eyes open. Wu Wentao felt a bit flustered; he hadn't considered this possibility at all. From this angle, Song Jiu looked no different from before, except for that peculiar expression—half-smiling, half-serious—which was rather unsettling in the dead of night.
After some thought, Wu Wentao decided not to call out to him just yet; he wanted to see what Song Jiu was doing. Sitting on the deck, Song Jiu seemed oblivious to the nearby observer, as if all his attention was focused on his hands. He leaned slightly forward, tilting his head now and then, as if engaged in conversation with someone.
Suddenly, Wu Wentao froze, an absurd thought creeping into his mind. His gaze swept past Song Jiu and scanned the area around him; apart from the lifeboats and tied-up equipment, there was no one else around. Just as he was feeling confused, he caught sight of something unusual out of the corner of his eye and quickly turned back to look at Song Jiu. To his surprise, Song Jiu had stood up at some point, wearing an inexplicable expression and staring directly at him.
Even though Wu Wentao had faced countless dangers before, this scene startled him nonetheless. A chill ran down his spine as he instinctively prepared to raise his gun.
"What are you doing?" Song Jiu asked coldly from beside the lifeboat.
Wu Wentao snapped back to reality, disengaging the safety on his weapon as he frowned and approached cautiously. "What are you doing here? Didn't I tell you to rest?"
"Who told you to come?" Song Jiu took a step back, pulling his hand out of his pocket to reveal a handgun gripped tightly in his hand, safety off and ready.
Wu Wentao halted in his tracks, increasingly uncertain about the situation. Just moments ago, he had speculated that Song Jiu might want some time alone and mistakenly thought he was being watched; that would explain his odd mood. But now it seemed something was definitely off.
"I'm on night watch; have you forgotten?" Wu Wentao's gaze flicked to the gun in Song Jiu's hand. He felt unsure about Song Jiu's intentions and frowned deeply. "What’s wrong with you?"
Song Jiu remained silent, his expression shifting, his eyes growing increasingly fierce as he took a step forward, slowly approaching Wu Wentao.
Wu Wentao sensed something was off; his instincts told him that Song Jiu was in a highly unstable state and that they could no longer remain in a standoff. Realizing this, Wu Wentao quickly stepped back, discreetly disengaging the safety on his weapon while adjusting his stance, forcing a casual smile as he said, "Your sister is looking for you. You should go check on her."
Song Jiu did not stop, his eyes filled with malice, a cold smile spreading across his lips as he replied, "You know my sister?"
"Wu Wentao," he began, but before he could finish, Song Jiu suddenly lunged forward from less than two meters away.
Wu Wentao was taken aback and hurriedly dodged to the side while reaching out to grab Song Jiu's arm that held the gun. He pivoted swiftly, evading Song Jiu's grasp like a fish slipping through fingers, and swung his elbow hard into the back of Song Jiu's head. Despite Song Jiu's initial attack, the inherent difference in their abilities remained; even if his emotional state had changed, it did not enhance his actual capabilities. Considering his companion's safety, Wu Wentao held back from delivering a fatal blow. The elbow strike landed squarely, causing Song Jiu to stumble and fall to the ground.
Wu Wentao twisted his neck and cursed, "Are you trying to go crazy or what?"
Before he could finish his sentence, he was caught off guard when Song Jiu suddenly rolled over on the ground without hesitation and pulled the trigger.
"Bang!"
A flash of fire erupted as the gun went off.
Cold sweat broke out on Wu Wentao as pain shot through his abdomen; he realized that something was seriously wrong with Song Jiu. Without wasting another moment, he dashed forward and delivered a powerful kick to Song Jiu's chest. The force of the kick nearly sent him flying. Wu Wentao quickly followed up by seizing Song Jiu's wrist that held the gun, twisting it with all his strength until the firearm fell onto the deck and was kicked into the sea.
However, despite having his wrist restrained, Song Jiu refused to yield. With a roar of anger and risking a broken wrist, he swung his free hand with ferocious speed towards Wu Wentao's head. Wu Wentao was furious; this guy was truly insane. He ducked to avoid the wild attack while loosening his grip slightly on Song Jiu's wrist. Using that moment of leverage, he pushed Song Jiu toward the lifeboat and followed up with a strike from the butt of his gun aimed at the back of Song Jiu's neck. Yet, instead of being knocked out as intended, Song Jiu became even more agitated from the pain and lunged at Wu Wentao like a wild beast, locking onto his neck with a fierce grip and growling like an animal in an attempt to choke him.
"You've got to be kidding me," Wu Wentao thought in disbelief. Here he was, a full-fledged Zombie, and this kid thought he could strangle him without considering the hands gripping his throat. Ignoring everything else, Wu Wentao swung a powerful fist in an arc—a Black Tiger Heart Punch—directly into Song Jiu's abdomen. With a cry of pain, Song Jiu jolted back, loosening his grip.
Hearing commotion coming from the central staircase, Wu Wentao guessed that others in the cabin must have heard the gunfire. If anyone saw Song Jiu in this state, it would surely cause problems. Seizing the moment while Song Jiu was momentarily subdued, Wu Wentao leaped up and grabbed him by the collar to flip him over. Apologizing silently in his mind for what he was about to do, he unleashed a punch filled with wind pressure that struck true against the enraged Song Jiu.
Just after finishing everything, the Bright Searchlight beam chased after him, and the sounds of Exclamations came from the deck behind him, with Song Yao and Luo Yu's voices already reaching him.
Wu Wentao turned his back to the light beam, exhaling deeply as he reached down to touch his lower abdomen where Song Jiu had shot him. Fortunately, since it was a close-range shot, the bullet had exited from the side without remaining inside, saving him from having to perform surgery on himself. He tugged at his clothes to cover the bloodstains and bent down to carry Song Jiu, cursing, "Turn off the lights."
"Old Wu!" Song Yao was the first to rush over. Upon seeing the two in disarray, he asked anxiously, "What happened? Was there gunfire?"
"Come to my Sleeper Cabin later. You go calm everyone down; don't let them follow us." Wu Wentao didn't have time for a lengthy explanation and subtly pointed at his gunshot wound, letting out a frustrated sigh.
Song Yao was taken aback and wanted to ask more questions, but the noise of people behind them grew louder. Luo Yu quickly followed and arrived at their side. Upon seeing Song Jiu unconscious on Wu Wentao's shoulder, he was momentarily stunned.
"Quickly go." Wu Wentao signaled to Song Yao with his eyes. Taking advantage of the crowd not yet arriving, he carried Song Jiu from the stern around to the port side and hurried toward the central staircase.
Song Yao and Luo Yu's faces turned pale as they noticed the clear and glaring bloodstains in the corner of the deck.
At five in the morning, Song Yao dragged his exhausted body and knocked on Wu Wentao's door.
Luo Yu opened the door. He peeked through the crack to check for anyone around before quickly stepping aside to let Song Yao in.
Wu Wentao sat at the table smoking, fiddling with something in his hands. Song Jiu lay on his bed, breathing steadily as if he were sleeping soundly. Although Wu Wentao had taken a bullet from him, in reality, he was worse off; Wu Wentao had landed a heavy punch that left a cut on Song Jiu's left cheek. Luo Yu had given him simple stitches, and it had stopped bleeding.
"How is he?" Song Yao sighed heavily as he sat beside Song Jiu and held his brother's hand, which felt icy cold.
"He should be fine; just superficial wounds," Luo Yu replied, weariness evident in his eyes as he looked at the sleeping Song Jiu, feeling increasingly troubled.
"Is there any movement outside?" Wu Wentao raised an eyebrow, his abdomen wrapped in gauze that faintly showed signs of blood.
"No, I mean you two had a fight, got into a scuffle, but it's all good now." Song Yao shook her head helplessly. The incident had happened so suddenly that she couldn't come up with a better excuse. After all, there was blood on the deck and gunshots had been fired; ordinary explanations wouldn't suffice. Although it sounded a bit harsh, it was still somewhat credible. Originally, both Song Jiu and Wu Wentao had unstable personalities, and it wasn't a big deal for men to get into a fight, even if it involved gunfire. With Song Yao vouching for them, the others naturally had no objections.
Wu Wentao forced a smile and cursed, "I haven't been shot in years."
"Are you okay?" Even though she knew Wu Wentao was a Zombie, he was still her younger brother who had been injured first, so Song Yao felt the need to check on him.
"I'm fine." Wu Wentao smiled and took a couple of deep drags from his cigarette. "Just tie him up; otherwise, it’ll be trouble if he wakes up and causes a scene."
"What happened to Jiu Jiu?" Luo Yu's eyes were slightly red as he asked anxiously, "What went wrong?"
"I can't explain it either; he just went crazy all of a sudden." Wu Wentao grimaced and raised his arm to shake it. "And this—when I found him, he was playing with this thing."
Song Yao and Luo Yu turned to look. Wu Wentao held up a Mahjong tile between his fingers, the character "Fa" intricately carved on its surface.
