It had been discovered; this was now an undeniable fact. My gaze fell upon Gu Chen, whose face was serious, and I felt a wave of apology rising within me, ready to express my regret. However, Gu Chen waved his hand, signaling me to remain silent. Looking around at the others, Jin Zhongyun glared at me with apparent anger, while Xiao Juan's eyes widened in disbelief. Mingyue merely furrowed her brows slightly, glanced at me, and then returned to her indifferent demeanor.
I took a deep breath, lowering my head slightly as a silent apology for my earlier outburst. But the moment I saw Mu Yan's ghost appear, I couldn't contain my excitement. After searching for so long and even causing He Si to suffer severe injuries because of this matter, we had finally uncovered the Mu Family connection and revealed Mu Yan's physical form. How could I not be thrilled? Yet, after that excitement came the realization of the consequences I would have to face—consequences that were clearly beyond my ability to bear. Everyone understood this, especially Gu Chen, who had no intention of letting me confront these repercussions alone. After signaling us to remain quiet, he stepped forward and erased the character in his palm before stepping outside the circle drawn in Vermilion.
He fully exposed himself to Mingyue's grandfather and the mysterious shadow. In that instant, I felt the chill that had just enveloped us shift its focus entirely onto Gu Chen. I understood that both Mingyue's grandfather and the mysterious shadow were now fixated on him.
"Long time no see, heh heh..." Mingyue's grandfather smiled a half-smile as Gu Chen stepped into view. "Mu Emperor, Dark Night, I never expected that I, Gu Chen, would have the fortune of witnessing both Demon Emperors gathered here at once. Truly worth the trip!" Gu Chen seemed unfazed by his smile and coldly scrutinized them in return before saying lightly.
Mu Emperor and Dark Night! Both Mingyue's grandfather and the mysterious shadow before me were Demon Emperors? My heart raced with this revelation. I had suspected as much when the mysterious shadow referred to Mingyue's grandfather as Mu Emperor earlier. Now hearing Gu Chen confirm it only solidified my certainty. Two Demon Emperors appeared right before my eyes! The presence of just one Mysterious Ghost King had already left Mao Shiba and Zhou Zhen helpless; now there were two Demon Emperors. How dangerous could this situation be? The thought was almost too terrifying to contemplate.
My gaze shifted back to Gu Chen, and my concern for him deepened alongside my guilt. If it weren't for my startled shout earlier, perhaps he wouldn't have had to face such terrifying foes. But it was too late for remorse now; I couldn't help him in any way. All I could do was reassure myself that perhaps they weren't as fearsome as they seemed. Moreover, judging by Gu Chen's earlier words, it was clear he knew these two Demon Emperors—at least they had crossed paths before or were aware of each other's reputations.
"Gu Chen, what are you doing here?" The mysterious shadow let out a cold snort, seemingly surprised by Gu Chen's appearance. Only Mingyue's grandfather appeared unfazed by it all, still wearing that enigmatic smile. Clearly, it wasn't just Gu Chen who recognized them; these two Demon Emperors also knew him.
Gu Chen simply smiled at the mysterious shadow before turning his attention back to Mingyue's grandfather—the old man hunched over as if half-buried in the ground—and said coolly: "Mu Emperor, Mu Family; that's quite surprising."
Gu Chen's words carried weight. Mingyue's grandfather responded with a somewhat forced smile: "I am indeed surnamed Mu and have some connection to this Mu Family; that's undeniable. So borrowing this young one's body isn't such a big deal!" He referred to Mingyue's grandfather’s physical form—the old man with white hair who truly was her grandfather. It was obvious now that this speaker was indeed Mu Emperor.
Mingyue looked at him with her brows slightly relaxed; perhaps she hadn't anticipated that her grandfather would be possessed by a Demon Emperor who seemed connected to her family lineage. This must have been why she remained vigilant around her grandfather.
Gu Chen remained silent but turned his gaze toward Mu Yan’s ghost, which had floated behind the mysterious shadow with an expression of daze.
"Are you also interested in her?" The mysterious shadow asked with a slight coldness in his voice as he noticed Gu Chen’s gaze.
Gu Chen did not respond immediately; instead, it was Mu Emperor inhabiting Mingyue’s grandfather who spoke first with a chuckle: "Dark Night, perhaps you are unaware!"
"Unaware of what?" asked the Demon Emperor known as Dark Night suspiciously.
Mu Emperor pointed at Gu Chen with an incredulous expression: "This kid actually took that old fellow named Gu as his master! Of course his master would come to snatch a wife and child for his disciple!"
"What?" The voice from within the shadow sounded astonished; clearly Mu Emperor’s words shocked Dark Night into disbelief as his icy gaze fell back on Gu Chen: "Is that true?"
"Indeed," Gu Chen nodded lightly with an indifferent expression.
"So your purpose here is also for this young girl?" Dark Night’s tone turned increasingly sinister.
"Yes, hand her over to me," Gu Chen replied calmly once more.
"Both?" At this moment, both Dark Night and Mu Emperor spoke simultaneously; the temperature around us dropped sharply as tension filled the air.
"Both." After a brief silence, Gu Chen’s tone became exceptionally firm.
Standing within the circle drawn in Vermilion, my heart raced as if it might leap from my chest at any moment. Upon hearing Gu Chen’s response, I felt a wave of relief wash over me—but soon after came renewed worry because it was evident that these two Demon Emperors were also after Mu Yan’s body and soul. Now that Gu Chen wanted her too, it felt like an unwelcome complication had arisen—another player in this dangerous game—and he was a living person at that. The worst-case scenario loomed in my mind: what if these two Demon Emperors joined forces against Gu Chen?
Just as this worry began to take root in my heart, reality swiftly caught up with us. No sooner had Gu Chen spoken than two chilling snorts echoed through the air—both Demon Emperors were clearly enraged by his declaration.
