The the Fu Family prepared a Welcome Banquet for us, filling the table with an abundance of dishes. During the meal, relatives from the the Fu Family exchanged words, praising me endlessly.
"This child, Jiayi, is truly understanding and filial. I heard from Grandma Zhen Ting that when she was in the hospital, Jiayi took great care of her!" An aunt dressed in a royal blue qipao enthusiastically complimented me, even serving me a helping of food.
I smiled shyly and accepted the dish, softly saying, "Auntie, you flatter me. Taking care of Grandma is what I should do."
"Exactly," another aunt in a purple silk blouse chimed in. "There aren't many kind and filial girls like Jiayi these days. Zhen Ting, you are truly fortunate!"
Fu Zhenting smiled and nodded, looking at me with affection as he held my hand, gently stroking the back of it. I felt my cheeks warm up, and my heart raced a little faster.
"Now that Jiayi is back, we should discuss the wedding plans," Father Fu said seriously as he set down his chopsticks and looked at us.
My heart skipped a beat as I instinctively glanced at Fu Zhenting. He calmly replied, "Dad, we were just thinking the same."
"Great! Wonderful!" Mother Fu clapped her hands joyfully. "I've been looking forward to this day! Jiayi, if you have any thoughts, please share them; we will do our best to accommodate you!"
I lowered my head shyly and said softly, "I... I will follow your arrangements."
After the meal, Fu Zhenting suggested taking me to the mall to buy some wedding supplies. I happily agreed.
Hand in hand, we walked down the street under the warm afternoon sun. I quietly leaned my head on his shoulder, feeling the warmth radiating from him.
" Jiayi!" A sharp voice broke the tranquility.
I lifted my head and saw Chen Jianjian standing not far away, accompanied by a well-dressed man. My heart sank, a bad premonition washing over me.
"Well, if it isn't Lin Jiayi! What's this? Have you hooked up with a rich guy?" Chen Jianjian said sarcastically, sizing me up with disdain in her eyes.
"Jianjian," the man beside her tugged at her sleeve, signaling her to watch her words.
Chen Jianjian shrugged off his hand and continued pointing at me, "Look at you, what kind of cheap clothes are you wearing? How dare you be with Zhen Ting? Aren't you afraid of embarrassing him?"
I bit my lip, my hand instinctively tightening around Fu Zhenting's.
Fu Zhenting stepped protectively in front of me, his gaze icy as he looked at Chen Jianjian. "Chen Jianjian, mind your words. My wife doesn't need your judgment."
Chen Jianjian laughed contemptuously. "Wife? You? Fu Zhenting, what are you pretending for? Don't think I don't know you're bankrupt!" She linked her arm with the man beside her, speaking haughtily, "Look at my boyfriend—young and accomplished, with a fortune over a hundred million! What do you have to compare?"
A smirk curled at the corner of Fu Zhenting's mouth as he replied calmly, "Chen Jianjian, it seems you have misunderstood my situation." He paused, his sharp gaze sweeping over Chen Jianjian and her boyfriend. "When have I ever gone bankrupt?"
The expression on Chen Jianjian's boyfriend changed instantly; he scrutinized Fu Zhenting closely, shock and fear filling his eyes.
"Mr. Fu?! You are... from Fu Group..." he stammered, his voice trembling as beads of sweat formed on his forehead.
Chen Jianjian looked bewildered at her boyfriend, not understanding why he suddenly became so anxious.
Ignoring Chen Jianjian's boyfriend, Fu Zhenting took my hand and turned to leave.
Her boyfriend hurriedly caught up, nodding and bowing as he said, "Mr. Fu, I’m really sorry! I didn’t know it was you! I apologize for any offense caused earlier, please forgive me!"
Fu Zhenting glanced at him lightly without saying a word and continued to pull me forward.
We walked into a high-end tailored suit store, where a well-dressed salesperson immediately approached us, respectfully saying, "Mr. Fu, welcome."
The salesperson's attitude left Chen Jianjian even more shocked; she stared at Fu Zhenting in disbelief.
Ignoring Chen Jianjian, we headed straight to the suit section. Fu Zhenting selected a deep blue suit for himself and then took me next door to the women's clothing store to choose a wedding dress.
"What do you think of this one?" I asked, pointing at a pure white mermaid wedding dress, seeking Fu Zhenting's opinion.
Fu Zhenting looked at me, his eyes filled with tenderness and love. "It's beautiful, just like you."
I shyly lowered my head, but couldn’t help the smile that crept onto my lips.
"Let’s go with this one," I said softly. "Let’s set the wedding date for next month."
