I rubbed my sore shoulders and reached out to hail a taxi. The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror and asked in a thick local accent, "Where to, miss?"
"West City Night Market, Li's Pancake Stand," I replied, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
The taxi sped along, the neon lights outside flashing and shimmering, casting a mesmerizing glow over the city's night. As I watched the scenery rush by, my thoughts drifted back to the surgery from a few days ago...
When I arrived at the Jianbing stand, the vendor was preparing to close up. "Salt Prince, you finally made it back! I thought you weren't coming today!" he exclaimed as he approached me, a hint of complaint in his tone. He was slender, dressed in a simple T-shirt, with an honest smile on his face. The streetlight illuminated him, casting a long shadow on the ground.
I took over the stall and reignited the grill, skillfully pouring the batter onto the hot iron plate. "There was an emergency at the hospital," I explained with a smile, my hands never stopping as a round Jianbing base quickly took shape.
The employees sent by Gu Yuanshan had long since dispersed, leaving only a few scattered customers. I deftly prepared Jianbing Guozi, sprinkling it with scallions and cilantro, brushing on sauce, then wrapping it with Crispy Cake and ham sausage. My movements were smooth and fluid. Before long, a long line formed in front of the stall, and the air was filled with an enticing aroma.
Bai Qianchen arrived late; she wore a light beige dress that made her look particularly pure and charming. "Gongqiu, I'm sorry I'm late," she said as she approached me with an apologetic smile. She gently tucked her hair behind her ear, her eyes showing a hint of fatigue.
I handed her a Jianbing Guozi loaded with double ham sausage and an egg. "Here you go," I said without charging her, winking playfully.
Bai Qianchen happily accepted the Jianbing Guozi. "Thank you!" she said, taking small bites and revealing a satisfied smile. The bustling sounds of the night market seemed to fade away as she immersed herself in the enjoyment of the food.
Manager Li passed by the Jianbing stand; today he was dressed in a sharp suit that made him look particularly energetic. "Salt Prince, your skills are still amazing!" he greeted me warmly and handed me a business card.
"Manager Li," I replied with a smile as I took the card from him. "How's business?" I asked while continuing to prepare Jianbing, my gaze focused on the sizzling batter.
"Thanks to you, business is booming! I wanted to invite you again to be the head chef at my upscale restaurant—this time with double pay!" Manager Li rubbed his hands together earnestly, his eyes filled with anticipation.
I shook my head, politely declining his invitation. "Manager Li, thank you for your kindness, but I prefer being here, free and easy." I handed the freshly made Jianbing to a customer and collected the payment. The night market was bustling with crowds, the sounds of various vendors calling out filling the air.
Suddenly, a call came in from the HR lady. "Xie Gongqiu, report to the newly established Metaverse department at the company tomorrow." Her tone was straightforward, without any unnecessary embellishments.
I hung up the phone, filled with confusion and curiosity. The Metaverse department? What is this new thing? I furrowed my brow and put my phone back in my pocket. The line at my stall was getting longer, so I quickened my pace.
At that moment, a mutt ran up to me, holding a wallet in its mouth and wagging its tail. Its fur was a mix of yellow and black, looking a bit dirty, but its eyes were clear and bright. I recognized it as the stray Dog Da Huang that had been stopped by security outside the amusement park.
I bent down to take the wallet from it and opened it to find an ID belonging to Gu Yuanshan and a family photo. In the picture, Gu Yuanshan was still a child, nestled in the arms of a gentle woman, his face beaming with happiness.
I patted Da Huang's head. "Thank you, Da Huang." I pulled out a ten-dollar bill from the wallet and bought a sausage for it. Da Huang happily took the sausage and ran off, disappearing into the crowd of the night market.
Holding the wallet, I walked over to a parked Maybach and tapped on the window.
The window slowly rolled down, revealing Gu Yuanshan's chiseled face. "Is there something?" he asked coldly, with a hint of confusion in his eyes.
I handed him the wallet. "Your wallet; stray Dog Da Huang found it." My tone was calm, my gaze clear, with no intention of seeking praise.
Gu Yuanshan took the wallet and looked at me intently for a moment before saying nothing. He started the car and slowly drove away. The glow of the taillights gradually faded into the night.
I turned back to my Jianbing stall and continued to busy myself.
Bai Qianchen pointed at the distant Maybach and said softly, "It seems he didn't say thank you." She took a bite of the Jianbing Guozi, her brows slightly furrowing as if she was deep in thought.
