Chapter 0: Cloud Emperor Liu Haitao
The newcomer was quite distinctive, with a body shape where his waist was larger than his torso, weighing at least three hundred pounds. Dressed in a golden-yellow Tang suit, he exuded an air of a wealthy and boisterous tycoon.
His round face was drenched in sweat, and as he rushed forward, the ground seemed to shake beneath him. While running, he waved his hands energetically and shouted enthusiastically, "Cloud Emperor! Cloud Emperor!"
Seeing the approaching figure, Lin Nan couldn't help but complain with a look of exasperation, "Did he not check the calendar before stepping out? Can't we encounter a normal person for once?"
"Cloud! Cloud! Hu! Hu! Hu!"
The newcomer reached Lian Yun and blocked the path of Lian Yun and the others, panting heavily and unable to straighten his back.
"Hu! Hu! Hu! What are you huffing about? Are you riding a horse or something?" Lin Nan retorted irritably.
"Isn't this Boss Liu? Oh, Chen Dong understands now!" Sun Chendong remarked cryptically without further explanation, wearing a mysterious expression.
"Lin Nan, don't be rude!"
"Boss Liu, take a moment to catch your breath first!"
To be a Boss in the Capital Ghost Market meant one either had formidable strength or strong backing. Observing Sun Chendong's demeanor made it clear that the newcomer meant no harm.
Thus, Lin Feiyu reprimanded Lin Nan while Lian Yun gently advised him.
After quite some time, Boss Liu finally caught his breath. He swallowed hard to moisten his parched throat before saying, "I am Liu Haitao. It's an honor to meet you, Lord Cloud Emperor!"
Only someone of considerable background or influence would address Lian Yun in such a manner; it was likely that only those from Cloud Emperor City would do so.
As he observed Sun Chendong's demeanor, he felt even more certain.
"I can't accept that. Just call me Lian Yun, Senior."
"No, no, no. Lord Cloud Emperor is the savior of my Liu Haitao's family. As the lord of Cloud Emperor City, I cannot address you by your name directly."
"With you saying that, how can I dare to accept? This is the capital, and I am not the lord of Cloud Emperor City. If Boss Liu doesn't mind, just call me Young Master Yun."
After some hesitation, Liu Haitao finally nodded in agreement. Suddenly, he grabbed Lian Yun's arm and began to pull him forward while exclaiming, "Young Master Yun has come to look for Ghost Slaves, right? Come, come, come! Let's go to my Cloud Emperor Palace. Take whatever you like; I won't take a single thing. If I do, then I'm not human!"
"If only everyone were like Boss Liu, grateful and willing to repay kindness, how could humanity ever fear the Demon Clan?" Lin Nan remarked suddenly with deep feeling.
He might have recalled the fluctuating aura he sensed when he took Lian Yun to Cloud Emperor City.
However, on both sides of the street, countless Spirits in transparent boxes seemed to understand Lin Nan's lip movements. In their madness and weariness, the Spirits suddenly returned to normal for a moment before their expressions turned wild again, filled with mockery.
In response to this, Lin Nan's eyes flashed with a cold indifference that was surprisingly ruthless, yet he said nothing more.
Unable to refuse Liu Haitao's hospitality, Lian Yun and Lin Feiyu were dragged along as they advanced for quite a distance under Liu Haitao's lead.
They finally stopped at one of the most bustling areas of the Ghost Market and arrived in front of a lavish store that resembled a palace.
Above the store hung a plaque inscribed with "Cloud Emperor Palace."
"Wow! Brother, is this your palace?" Lin Nan exclaimed in awe.
However, Liu Haitao nodded and said, "If the Cloud Emperor Young Master Yun wishes for it, this palace would not mind gifting it!"
Such generosity truly left Lian Yun at a loss.
After shaking his head, Lian Yun looked at a transparent box in front of the door.
The box was about three meters tall, and inside it was a Spirit that stood over two and a half meters tall. Its physique was extremely robust, yet its head was oddly proportioned, appearing disproportionately small compared to its body, creating a triangular shape between its shoulders and head. However, this 'head' did not exude the usual Resentment aura of Spirits; instead, it had a somewhat honest and simple demeanor, even appearing somewhat dull-witted.
"This ghost is called Sword Mountain, the Useless Ghost. There's no need to look at it; Young Master Yun should come with me into the hall to take a look."
"Useless Ghost? Why does Boss Liu price it at ten thousand gold?"
In chaotic times, gold was king, and paper currency was not in circulation.
Currently, it was indeed a chaotic era, with cities uncertain of when they might be destroyed by the Demon Clan, and the alliance was on shaky ground. Although there were real paper notes produced by the alliance today, some important transactions were still settled in gold.
However, this was not heavy physical gold but rather transactions made via card; after all, if the alliance were to fall apart, where would humanity find a chance to survive?
If it weren't for Liu Boss's earlier words, Lin Nan might have thought that Liu Boss was unwilling to part with such a precious Ghost Slave; right now, he was merely curious.
Upon hearing the question, Liu Haitao suddenly became somewhat indignant and said, "This ghost is indeed useless. At first, I thought it was a rare Ghost Slave because of its immense strength and spent twenty thousand gold to purchase it. However, I never expected that after selling it several times, buyers returned it. It’s so dull that it cannot follow commands and cannot merge with other Spirits to form a Ghost Battle Body."
"I've already lowered the price several times, yet no one is willing to buy!"
"Can you really return something after selling it?" Lin Nan asked incredulously.
“Liu Boss is truly a man of integrity!” Sun Chendong exclaimed.
Liu Haitao felt a bit embarrassed but also a sense of pride as he replied, “This is the foundation of how I, Old Liu, conduct myself! This Sword Mountain was originally rated as a C-Class in the Demon King Realm, but it was downgraded to its current B-Class status after being returned a few times.”
With this, Lian Yun and the others understood.
Someone had purchased Sword Mountain, signed a contract, and now that Sword Mountain was deemed useless, they had terminated the contract by damaging Sword Mountain's Ghost Body.
However, Liu Haitao likely refunded the full amount, which is why Sun Chendong praised Liu Haitao's reputation.
“Liu Boss, could you let me speak with him?”
“Yun~ Young Master Yun, this Sword Mountain is truly a Useless Ghost; it's better not to look at it. I have some even more precious Ghost Slaves in my shop~~”
“Liu Boss, do you think my brother is looking for Ghost Slaves to transform them into a Ghost Battle Body?” Lin Nan suddenly asked.
Lin Feiyu secretly gave a thumbs up!
“Isn’t that so?” Sun Chendong questioned, his face filled with regret and disappointment.
However, Liu Haitao seemed initially confused but then nodded regretfully before activating some functions of the transparent box.
“Are you willing to follow me?” Lian Yun asked directly.
“Do you have food?” The voice of Sword Mountain was deep and resonant.
"Wow, so you're a foodie!" Lin Nan said, looking speechless.
Lian Yun couldn't help but chuckle, then asked, "Well, let's see how much you can eat each day!"
"I get full after eating fifty buns!"
Lian Yun, Lin Feiyu, Lin Nan, and Sun Chendong all turned to look at Liu Haitao with disbelief.
The four of them held high status and had extensive knowledge, yet they had never heard of a Spirit needing to eat.
Coughing awkwardly, Liu Haitao said, "It's probably about the weight of a Third-Order Ghost."
Oh~~ The four nodded in understanding.
Lian Yun turned back with a slight smile and said, "I can't guarantee that you'll have enough to eat every day, but whenever any of my other Ghost Friends have food, you won't miss out on your share. How does that sound?"
Sword Mountain seemed momentarily confused; perhaps it was due to something missing from its Ghost Body or its intelligence being somewhat lacking. It couldn't quite grasp Lian Yun's words or calculate how much food there would be each day, leaving it in a daze for a moment.
