As soon as an Elder from the Lian Clan took a step, a flash of sword light descended upon his leg. The wound was cleanly cut, but the severed limb had turned to mush. The hair on his forehead and the tip of his nose had also been partially erased.
This was a vertical attack.
It could be merciless, yet Lian Yun had chosen to show restraint.
If Lian Yun truly wanted to kill, he could have waited until the Elder was within a hundred meters before striking.
However, Lian Yun attacked as soon as the Elder stepped forward. Although he severed a leg, he spared the Elder's life, simultaneously warning everyone from the Lian Clan that he did not wish to engage with any of them.
As he had stated before, he had severed ties with the Lian Family and had nothing to discuss with its members.
The only reason he came today was for Lian Shan personally, not for the Lian Family.
To be honest, Lian Yun sensed that Lian Shan had been living a life worse than death these past few years, and he felt a twinge of having wronged Lian Shan in the past.
Yet, the hatred and disdain from back then were too strong; even now, despite not harboring any hatred, he found it difficult to speak kindly to Lian Shan. After carefully preparing the tea, he softly said, "Drink tea!"
Lian Shan's demeanor and aura still exuded despair and confusion, but he instinctively picked up the teacup and took a sip.
After drinking, a glimmer of life slowly returned to his eyes—an expression of disbelief and astonishment.
Lian Yun did not look at him but continued pouring another cup of tea. He gazed into the distance, feeling a sense of loneliness wash over him. After a long pause, he asked, "Did my parents discuss anything with you back then?"
Lian Shan suddenly snapped awake, shaking his head vigorously. Yet, he cherished the teacup in his hands and took another careful sip. It felt as if this cup of tea was hard-earned and perhaps there would be no second chance in this lifetime.
However, Lian Yun felt no special sentiment; instead, he fixed his gaze on Lian Shan and said with a slightly darkened expression, "The Peerless Demon Master sent someone to deliver my parents' bodies to me. If I can find their souls in the Demon Realm within two and a half years, there is a chance to bring them back to life."
Lian Shan seemed struck by lightning; his whole body trembled. The precious teacup and tea fell from his hands, scalding liquid splattering on his legs without him noticing. His bony arms suddenly grasped Lian Yun's arm as he exclaimed, "What? What did you just say?"
Before the old man could receive an answer, tears streamed down his face.
Yet this 'intimate' contact made Lian Yun feel quite uncomfortable; he shuddered slightly and shook off the old man's hands. Then he spoke with indifference: "I have already severed ties with the Lian Clan; there is no possibility of returning. Thus, I have come today to ask you if you are willing to leave the Lian Clan and take care of my parents' remains."
The old man was taken aback, looking down at his seemingly powerless hands, and suddenly he smiled. It was a somewhat inexplicable smile, silent yet filled with an unexplainable sense of relief.
He had never truly lost his grandson, Lian Yun; he had merely made a wrong choice.
After that incident, if he had taken Lian Yun away from the Lian Family, then even if Lian Yun might have hated him, he would not have despised him so much. He might have even felt earlier that his grandfather had no choice in the matter.
If there hadn't been a willingness to understand Lian Shan's intentions, Lian Yun would not have spent three years giving Lian Shan one last chance.
However, back then, he had avoided Lian Yun and thought that even if Lian Yun turned out to be useless, he should ensure his life was filled with wealth and honor. Thus, he kept Lian Yun within the Lian Clan, which only increased Lian Yun's resentment towards him.
Perhaps knowing it was part of Lian An's scheme, he still wanted Lian Yun to serve as a subordinate to become the champion of the Alliance Tournament. This was because he was already old and worried that after his passing, Lian Yun would have no support.
One wrong step led to another, ultimately resulting in a complete rupture.
Yet despite this rupture, Lian Yun still returned to find him, which indicated that no matter how much Lian Yun had once hated and despised him, deep down in his heart, he had never truly severed ties with him.
His grandson could not bring himself to be estranged from him. The feeling of regaining something lost brought a childlike smile to the old man's face.
His wrinkled skin revealed an innocent smile that nearly melted Lian Yun's heart.
Just as Lian Shan had never lost Lian Yun, Lian Yun had also never lost this grandfather. There had simply been too much regret and too many misunderstandings in the past.
With a gentle sigh and a slight shake of his head, Lian Yun maintained his indifferent expression and said, "Then let's go. Is there anything you need to pack?"
Lian Shan continued to smile without speaking but shook his head in response.
At some point, it seemed that Lian Yun had become everything to him. Thus, the rift with Lian Yun made him feel as though he had truly lost everything. In his distress, his cultivation level plummeted from Monarch to Elementary King.
Now that he had regained what was lost, following Lian Yun meant having everything again; what else was there to pack?
Lian Yun nodded silently and took to the skies with Lian Shan before soaring away.
Without leaving any words behind, it wasn't long before Zhou Tong arrived at King Guang City with Lian Yun's intentions. Like an imperial decree, he announced that Lian Shan was leaving the Lian Family. If anyone from the Lian Family dared to act in the name of either Lian Yun or Lian Shan, then the entire Lian Clan would face the wrath of Cloud Emperor City.
The reason for such a decree was that the Lian Clan had arranged for a dozen High-Level Monarchs to imprison Lian Shan.
The Lian Clan only had Lian Shan as their sole Monarch, and thus the matter of his decline in power could not be known by anyone. Therefore, the Lian Family decided to confine Lian Shan, continuing to act under the name of the Monarch family.
Now that Lian Yun had taken Lian Shan away and announced it to the world, it was as if, although no direct action was taken, the Lian Family had been brought to their knees.
However, if the Lian Clan could act discreetly and with humility, they might avoid being exterminated. It could be said that Lian Yun had not completely destroyed the Lian Clan.
Afterward, Lian Yun took Lian Shan back to the Lin Family's mansion in the capital.
Initially, Lian Yun intended to seek Grandma's opinion on whether she would allow Lian Shan to look after the remains of his parents.
To his surprise, Grandma showed no sign of resentment towards Lian Shan. It was as if she already knew everything that had transpired. With a hint of indifference, she said, "You only made one mistake: you should not have let Yun'er be alone in the Lian Family for three years."
This essentially implied that Lian Shan's betrayal of Lian Yun's family was somehow justified, which clearly did not make sense. The only explanation was that Grandma might have known all along that Lin Beiyan was aware of the plot against their family.
It seemed that only Lian Yun had been kept in the dark all those years.
