Xiaoxiao tightened her grip on the coffee cup, her knuckles turning slightly white from the pressure.
Lin Feng gently took hold of Xiaoxiao's hand, feeling its coldness. A hint of concern flickered in his eyes. "Xiaoxiao, you must remember that our ultimate goal is to protect you and the child. Don't let hatred consume you."
Xiaoxiao lifted her gaze to meet Lin Feng's deep eyes, the chill in her own gradually melting away, replaced by a faint sadness. "I know. I just... can't forget the past, can't forgive them."
"Let the past be the past. You have to believe that the future will be better," Lin Feng said softly, patting the back of Xiaoxiao's hand in comfort.
Xiaoxiao nodded, taking a deep breath to suppress her emotions. "I will. Let's get back to business. Have you looked at the contents of the USB drive?"
Lin Feng plugged the USB drive into his tablet and quickly browsed through the files. "I've already seen it. These documents record evidence of illegal transactions and money laundering by the the Ye Cheng Family over the years. It's enough to ruin them."
In a dim corner of the café, Xiaoxiao and Lin Feng spoke in hushed tones, their plan advancing step by step, like an invisible net slowly tightening around their target.
Meanwhile, in Ye Cheng's office, he had also wrapped up his day’s work.
"Aileen, your performance today was outstanding." Ye Cheng closed the file in his hands and looked up at Xiaoxiao, who stood across from his desk, admiration evident in his eyes.
Xiaoxiao nodded slightly, her tone still calm. "Thank you for the compliment, President. It's what I should do."
Ye Cheng stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing out at the night scene below while feeling a sense of restlessness within him. Xiaoxiao's presence had stirred ripples in his previously tranquil life.
Her gaze and demeanor felt familiar to him, yet he couldn't recall where he had seen them before.
"You..." Ye Cheng turned around, looking at Xiaoxiao, hesitating to speak.
Xiaoxiao raised her head, calmly gazing at Ye Cheng. "President, do you have any further instructions?"
As Ye Cheng met Xiaoxiao's cold gaze, the familiar feeling in his heart intensified, yet he could not explain where it came from.
"Nothing else. It's getting late; you should leave work early," Ye Cheng finally refrained from saying what was on his mind. He didn't even know what he wanted to say; he just didn't want her to leave his sight.
"Alright, President. You should also get some rest," Xiaoxiao replied with a slight nod before turning to leave the office.
Ye Cheng watched Xiaoxiao's departing figure, his expression complex and hard to read. He walked over to his desk, picked up his phone, and dialed a number.
"Help me look up someone. The new assistant at the company, named Erin."
"I need all her information, as detailed as possible," Ye Cheng said in a low tone, laced with a hint of urgency.
A respectful voice came from the other end of the line. "Yes, Young Master Ye Cheng. I will arrange it right away."
Ye Cheng hung up the phone and walked over to the liquor cabinet, pouring himself a glass of whiskey. He downed it in one gulp, but the fiery liquid could not extinguish the restlessness in his heart.
He moved to the floor-to-ceiling window, overlooking the city's nightscape, yet his thoughts drifted far away.
After Xiaoxiao left Ye Cheng's office, she headed straight back to her desk and opened her computer to organize today's work.
She appeared calm, but her mind was racing with thoughts of the conversation she had just had with Ye Cheng and the way he looked at her.
In his gaze, there was curiosity, a hint of inquiry, and perhaps… nostalgia?
Xiaoxiao couldn't help but let out a self-deprecating smile. How could he possibly feel nostalgic about her? Between them, there was only hatred, devoid of any warmth.
