In the evening, the horse team passed through a forest.
"Brother Wei Chen, Brother Shaohou, let's rest here for the night. If we're lucky, we might catch some game. The game on the Witch Clan Continent is quite precious," Dugu said, looking at Wei Chen to seek his opinion.
Unknowingly, Wei Chen had become the backbone of the group. Even the proud Dugu held a certain respect for him.
Perhaps it was the lingering aura of the Demon God that surrounded Wei Chen; others might not notice it, but Dugu could see it clearly.
Wei Chen replied, "Food on the Witch Clan Continent is really expensive. I suppose hunting game won't be easy either."
"Yes, even a mountain rabbit contains considerable Witch Power. If there were any around, they would have been hunted long ago. It all depends on luck," Dugu said with a smile.
Wei Chen suggested, "Then let's rest for the night and set off tomorrow. After all, there's nothing urgent."
Dugu immediately ordered to set up camp. Although the guards he brought along were not particularly loyal—merely guards from the Yang Residence—after Dugu had single-handedly taken down a few assassins, those guards had become quite obedient. They thought that following such a master would give them hope for their future status in the Yang Family.
These guards had little standing in the Yang Residence and were often treated as expendable. Assigned to protect Yang Liao, they felt they had no hope of turning their fortunes around. It would be a miracle if they could rise up while following someone as useless as Yang Liao.
However, in reality, Yang Liao was no longer the same Yang Liao. At this moment, Dugu Qiubai had already revealed impressive strength, which astonished those guards and gave them hope for a stable life in the Yang Residence.
The guards moved quickly, clearly eager to show their worth after seeing a glimmer of hope. They all wanted to impress their new master in hopes of reaping better rewards when Yang Liao became successful in the future.
No matter where one is or who one is with, people generally tend to flatter those in power. This isn't necessarily a flaw; it's merely an instinct to cling to the strong. Those without strength have no reason to expect others to respect them.
"Keep watch here and stay alert; those supplies have some value. Once we reach Right Holy City and sell them, each of you will receive rewards in Witch Stones," Dugu instructed seriously, pointing at the items brought from Mirror Lake Town.
The guards nodded eagerly, their faces full of flattery.
After giving his instructions, Dugu turned to Wei Chen and Shaohou and said, "Let's go deeper into the forest and see if we can make any discoveries. Interested?"
Wei Chen smiled and replied, "Sure."
For Wei Chen, nothing mattered at the moment; he was simply too relaxed.
The three of them strolled into the forest, slowly making their way up the mountainside.
"The Witch Clan Continent is truly peculiar. Everyone has such strong combat abilities and robust physical qualities, yet they can't fly. It's so backward!" Shaohuang God King said with a look of helplessness. If it were just him and Wei Chen, they could fly anywhere quickly, but with Dugu around, they had to walk at a painfully slow pace.
In the Witch Clan Continent, one needed to reach the Wizard Realm to be able to fly. Dugu was still quite far from that level.
Dugu shrugged helplessly and said, "The people here are generally physically strong because they automatically absorb Witch Power from a young age, which gives them some refinement. But since the Spatial Plane here is quite advanced, we can't fly until we reach the Wizard Realm. However, I can."
"You can?" Shaohuang God King asked in surprise.
Wei Chen looked at Dugu with great interest. "Did you borrow a body and bring over the energy from your past life? That can't be possible, right?"
Wei Chen thought that since it was the Demon God who captured Dugu's soul, Dugu's previous life must have been impressive. He must have been a significant figure who could easily fly. But after borrowing a body for rebirth, it was the soul that was reborn; his body was still that of a Witch Clan Yang Liao. How could he possibly bring over the energy he cultivated in his past life?
Dugu smiled proudly and said, "Just some minor tricks. I've been reborn for a few days now, and that's enough time for me to cultivate to the first level of Sword Dao and fly with my sword."
Wei Chen didn't quite grasp what that meant, but Shaohuang God King's expression changed.
He looked at Dugu as if he had seen a ghost and murmured, "Flying with a sword isn't difficult, but in just a few days? How is that possible?"
Dugu smiled mysteriously and said, "My level is beyond your imagination; my Sword Dao cultivation is much stronger than yours. You might not like to hear this, but soon enough, you'll understand that I, Sword Demon Dugu Qiubai, am not just a name."
Shaohuang God King pouted, not wanting to argue. He was confident in his own Sword Dao skills; perhaps he wasn't as strong as Dugu, but he wasn't far behind either.
"Since that's the case, let's fly and search."
With the powers of the Ancient World and Endless Divine Realm, Wei Chen and Shaohuang soared into the air while Dugu stood firmly on his treasured sword and flew up steadily.
"Dugu, I never doubted your Sword Dao skills; after all, that Fellow chose you for a reason. But Shaohuang's Sword Dao skills are no less impressive. I think you two could benefit from each other," Wei Chen said to ease the tension he sensed from Shaohuang. He had always known that Shaohuang God King was quite proud; being mocked by Dugu would surely make him uncomfortable. Now that they were all part of the same team, Wei Chen wanted to avoid any disharmony.
Hearing Wei Chen's words, Dugu had yet to respond when Shaohou, with a stern expression, said, "Once Dugu Brother regains his strength, I will seek his guidance. As for now, I have little interest."
The attitude of the Shaohuang God King was quite poor, rendering Wei Chen's attempts at mediation completely futile.
"These sword cultivators are all so arrogant. I hope they don't end up fighting," Wei Chen thought to himself. "Even if they do, it won't concern me. I just want to see whose sword is stronger—Shaohou's Wuwei Sword or Dugu's Dominant Sword."
Upon hearing Shaohou's provocation, Dugu smiled slightly and said, "Don't worry, Brother Shaohou. I won't disappoint you."
"I'll be waiting," Shaohou replied coldly.
The two sword masters were at an impasse, causing Wei Chen considerable frustration.
Wei Chen chose not to say more; any further words would be pointless. He decided to take things one step at a time.
The mountain was not very large. A moment later, the three had circled the entire range. They hadn't spotted any large Witch Beasts, nor even a wild rabbit or chicken.
"Dugu, is the Witch Clan Continent really this desolate? With such a large mountain, there should be some wild beasts around, right?" Wei Chen asked Dugu helplessly.
Dugu sighed and replied, "I can't explain this either; there simply aren't any. The soil of the Witch Clan Continent is half occupied by the Witch Clan and half by the Witch Beasts. In the territory of the Witch Beasts, there are plenty of wild monsters. However, those powerful Witch Beasts are very dangerous. With our current strength, if we entered their territory, we would meet a terrible fate. As for the Witch Clan's territory, there are very few Witch Beasts left; almost none can be seen on the streets as they have all been hunted down."
"Decades ago, to prevent the Witch Beasts from growing stronger in their territory, the strong members of the Witch Clan initiated a massacre to eliminate those beasts entirely. This was to stop them from absorbing the Witch Power from the world and gradually transforming into Witch Beasts. As a result of that massacre, almost all wild beasts scattered across the Witch Clan's territory were eradicated, making it difficult to find any traces of them now and causing meat prices in Right Holy City to soar."
"By the way, there are still many secret realms within the Witch Clan's territory. Some of these realms are naturally formed while others have been shaped by powerful Witch Beasts using their attributes. In those secret realms, there might still be a large number of wild beasts present. Almost every day, adventurers traverse the Witch Clan's territory in search of secret realms. Once discovered, they risk their lives to enter and hunt beasts to sell back in the great city for a substantial amount of Witch Stones."
"It’s a business fraught with risks and rewards; wild beasts hold high value while human lives sometimes seem less valuable. If one encounters an elderly and dying Witch Beast, that could lead to a fortune."
Dugu spoke at length about what he knew from his memories of Yang Liao's knowledge. In truth, Yang Liao had limited experiences; most of what he knew was merely theoretical.
Upon hearing Dugu's explanation, Wei Chen remarked lightly, "It's the same everywhere—it's survival of the fittest."
"Well, survival of the fittest is the natural order of things, something that cannot be changed," Dugu said calmly.
Wei Chen nodded lightly. Suddenly, he turned to Dugu and asked with a frown, "Dugu, do the Witch Clan and Witch Beasts on the Witch Clan Continent also face the day when they grow old and die? Even in our Spatial Planes, once one reaches a certain level of cultivation, they essentially achieve immortality."
Dugu explained, "It's the same on the Witch Clan Continent. Whether it's the Witch Clan or the Witch Beasts, there exists a cultivation threshold. Once you surpass that threshold, the risk of aging and dying disappears. If you can't surpass that threshold, then the lifespans of both the Witch Clan and Witch Beasts are quite similar. Different levels of cultivation correspond to different lifespans."
"So how long can ordinary people—those with average strength—live?" Wei Chen asked.
Shaohou thought for a moment and replied, "About ten thousand years, I suppose. After all, the population of the Witch Clan is so small that every new life requires an enormous cost."
"Cost?" Wei Chen asked in confusion, while Shaohou perked up with interest.
Dugu said, "It's very difficult for the Witch Clan to give birth. To put it simply, women find it hard to conceive, and men often have issues with fertility. The Witch Clan is so powerful; if they had high fertility as well, then the entire vast universe would belong to them, leaving no room for other humans."
Upon hearing this, both Wei Chen and Shaohou nodded in understanding.
"Generally speaking, members of the Witch Clan only give birth around three thousand years old. They cannot have offspring before that age. From three thousand to five thousand years is their reproductive period; if they miss that window, they can no longer have descendants."
"The Right Holy City’s Yang Family is considered a family with some influence. Currently, there are three generations actively involved in the family. Above these three generations are some skilled ancestors who have achieved success in their cultivation and gained longer lifespans."
As Dugu casually explained this, he suddenly noticed that Wei Chen's expression had grown serious.
