Living Funeral
Just as I was about to answer the phone, I heard a woman sobbing. I hadn't even pressed the answer button yet.
A suffocating sensation surged in my chest.
I saw a pair of pale, withered hands gripping my neck, and the feeling washed over me like a tide. Damn it, I couldn't help but curse inwardly.
But cursing was useless; I was still being held tightly.
I had already recognized who was choking me—it was that female ghost from before.
I never expected her to come after me so quickly. I had just managed to get her corpse out and was preparing to deal with it again.
This ghost had come seeking revenge.
I was knocked to the ground, struggling, but I couldn't break free.
Gao Ling had the audacity to ask me what was wrong?
At that moment, I couldn't even speak; the sensation was unbearable. I could guarantee that my veins were bulging and my face looked terrible.
I was done for, done for. It seemed like this time I wouldn't survive. The key point was that the ghost was still pitifully sobbing while choking me.
I was on the verge of passing out, and Gao Ling stood by, clueless.
I thought to myself, with teammates like this, dying wouldn’t be surprising. Gradually, I lost even the strength to struggle.
But just then, Gao Ling sprang into action. I saw him holding a yellow talisman in his hand as he shouted, “Exorcism Talisman.” After saying that, he pressed it against my forehead.
In an instant, a faint yellow light flashed before my eyes, and the female ghost let out a shriek before being thrown back.
Gao Ling exclaimed, "There really is a ghost! I was just testing if this talisman works!"
I couldn't even be bothered to call this guy an idiot. Lying on the ground, I gasped for breath, struggling to recover. At that moment, my phone had stopped ringing.
Gao Ling helped me up, and I tore the yellow talisman from my forehead and handed it to her.
Gao Ling then asked me, "Where is the ghost?"
I was speechless...
Could it be that Gao Ling still hadn't seen the ghost? It was right in front of us! At that moment, blood was still trickling from her forehead, making her look even more terrifying.
I carried Urn on my back, and my breath gradually returned to normal.
I asked, "Why are you doing this?"
The female ghost bitterly replied, "Anyway, I can't live anymore. If I'm going to die, I might as well take someone down with me."
This ghost was filled with resentment. Damn it, she was dead and still wanted to drag me down with her. I couldn't help but swallow hard, feeling a chill run down my spine and a sense of dread creeping into my heart.
I knew this ghost must resent me for not helping her, but I was barely holding on myself; how could I assist her?
We locked eyes.
I wondered if this talisman could really suppress the ghost. If it couldn't, and she latched onto me, my life would be miserable too. Things were already complicated enough.
I thought for a moment and said, "Alright then, I agree to help you."
After I spoke, the female ghost seemed somewhat incredulous. "Are you really willing to help me?"
I nodded. In my heart, I thought, if I don't help you, what will happen? If you let me go and stop haunting me, then I'd be a fool for helping you.
Gao Ling didn't interject at this point; the agreement was reached just like that.
Gao Ling asked me, "So the ghost won't kill you anymore?"
I nodded in affirmation.
Gao Ling put away the talisman and said, "I didn't expect this broken talisman to actually work." I ignored Gao Ling and continued to ask the female ghost, "How do you want me to help you?"
By now, it was almost dawn. The female ghost couldn't linger any longer; she came to find me at night and then vanished without a trace.
After seeing her disappear, I exhaled a breath of frustration. Damn it, she nearly choked me to death out of nowhere.
My heart, which had been hanging in the air, finally settled down. I lit a cigarette for myself and handed one to Gao Ling. At that moment, I had no desire to talk.
I picked up the photo and the disc from the ground; this disc and photo must have been left behind by that shadowy figure earlier.
Now that three corpses had been burned beyond recognition, it was clear that someone had destroyed the evidence.
Could it be Zhang Xun? After stealing the Corpse Oil, Zhang Xun might have burned the bodies to prevent us from discovering anything. But what was Zhang Xun afraid of?
And this photo... 198 years...
In this strange black and white photo, there was actually a picture of several of us together... I couldn't make sense of it; this number must have some special meaning.
But I still didn't know what it was. I glanced at my phone and saw a missed call from Zhang Xun.
When I called back, it said the phone was turned off.
I shoved my phone into my pocket, not wanting to think about it anymore. Gao Ling and I began our descent down the mountain. After tonight's events, I felt even more uncertain.
I had almost lost my life...
The female ghost's body was still in the mortuary, so we couldn't leave just yet. We had no choice but to tidy up and spend the night at the mortuary.
However, Gao Ling said it wasn't safe to stay there.
After thinking for a moment, I agreed. The sun had just risen, and seeing the light made me feel a bit more at ease.
Since we couldn't stay here, we decided to head to town instead, making sure not to stray too far from this place.
Gao Ling agreed, and we arrived in town, finding a hotel where we used to eat often and rented two rooms. The prices in town weren't high; the two rooms cost only sixty yuan.
The boss recognized me and said, "Haven't seen you two around for hot pot lately."
I paused for a moment before replying, "The mortuary has been closed for a break."
After I spoke, the boss looked at me in surprise. But what he said next left me stunned: "But last night, Fat Zhang said the mortuary has been really busy lately!"
Upon hearing this, I immediately asked, "What do you mean?"
Perhaps my reaction was too intense, as the Boss seemed startled by me and paused for a moment. I calmed myself and asked, "Did Fat Zhang come here for dinner last night?"
The Boss replied, "Don't you know? Haven't you two been together recently?"
At that moment, a huge wave of shock surged within me. Could it be that Fat Zhang was really not dead? How could that be possible? I was certain that Fat Zhang was dead.
However...
My expression began to darken.
The Boss asked, "Are you okay?"
I was momentarily lost in thought and didn't respond, so Gao Ling spoke up for me. "Boss, he's fine. Can we get some breakfast?" After saying this, Gao Ling gave my shoulder a reassuring pat.
I snapped back to reality, and Gao Ling said to me, "You’re not in shock, are you?"
I shook my head to indicate I was fine, but inside I kept questioning how this could be possible!
Gao Ling pulled me inside to sit down. Although it was summer, the morning air was still cool, so the fan wasn't turned on.
Yet suddenly, I felt a chill wash over me...
My mind replayed the scene from that night when the body was burned, recalling every detail vividly, including the first sight of Fat Zhang's corpse.
He had wrapped himself in a blanket, his face pale and his deathly appearance haunting.
I glanced at the photo again and paused for a moment before asking the Boss, "Can I use your computer?"
The boss hesitated for a moment and said, "There are private contents inside..."
I replied, "...I already know what the private content is. This boss is quite young; many towns already have broadband now."
I assured the boss that I wouldn't look at the private content, just a CD. I waved a CD in front of him.
The boss mischievously asked, "What kind of CD is it?"
I casually mentioned it was related to a driver's license. The boss didn't hold back and quickly told me that the computer was in the room.
Gao Ling and I headed to the room while the boss continued preparing breakfast.
I inserted the CD into the computer's main unit, and it was quickly read. I clicked play.
I asked Gao Ling to close the door. Initially, I thought this CD would have visuals, but it started without any images—only a sound emerged, resembling a saw cutting through wood... The noise was quite unpleasant...
Gao Ling remarked, "What is this sound? There's not even a shadow of a person."
I remained silent, listening intently as time ticked away. Finally, I heard an incredibly familiar voice... This voice sent chills down my spine, and a wave of coldness crept up my back... A thread of terror began to spread in this white space...
