Living Funeral
Perhaps the video recorded on this CD is too old, which is why it sounds fragmented and somewhat harsh.
The images are also in black and white.
But soon, someone called out a name: Zhang Xun...
The voice calling the name was incredibly familiar, causing Gao Ling to cast a surprised glance at me.
Because this voice sounded just like mine.
This voice was actually calling out Zhang Xun...
My breathing gradually became heavier as I exchanged a glance with Gao Ling. Gao Ling then asked, "Fei, where did you shoot this video? What did you use? The quality is terrible."
Gao Ling hadn’t quite grasped the situation yet; he still thought we had filmed this.
However, I didn’t explain to Gao Ling because I had no idea how to clarify this. How the hell do you explain something like this? But I could guarantee that I had never been to that place.
Yet now, it certainly seemed suspicious.
The progress bar of the video continued moving forward. It was filmed at night, with dim lighting that relied mostly on a flashlight for illumination.
At that moment, I heard someone shout Brother Chen, asking what we should do now.
But just after that sentence fell, a strange scream echoed, followed by someone shouting to retreat quickly...
I felt an inexplicable tension rising within me as I focused on the video. The sounds within it suddenly became overwhelmingly chaotic.
Just at that critical moment, the video progress bar came to an end.
My heart sank along with the progress bar, and I was left in a daze, my mind in disarray, unable to sort through the information.
I was in a state of confusion when Gao Ling called out to me, "Fei, what do you think this is?"
At that moment, the video froze on its final frame, revealing a red object resembling a badge. However, due to the blurriness of the image, I could only make out its general shape.
I stared at it for a while but couldn't figure out what it was.
Did Zhang Xun and Fatty Zhang know each other before? Did I know them too? This didn't make any sense! I was several years older than Fatty.
But then again, several years isn't exactly scientific... If that photo was indeed taken in 198 years ago, the people in it should have looked like they were in their teens or twenties at the time, which would mean they should be at least in their forties or fifties now.
Yet neither Fatty Zhang nor Zhang Xun seemed to be that age!
Could it be that someone was trying to confuse me, deliberately creating this to mislead me? With today's Photoshop technology, making something like this isn't difficult at all!
I fell into deep thought...
Suddenly, Gao Ling said, "Why do I feel a chill running down my back?"
I didn't know how to respond to Gao Ling. Outside, Boss was calling us for breakfast. I shut down the computer and took out the disc.
But something still felt off!
Gao Ling might have really been hungry; as soon as she heard breakfast was ready, she scampered off eagerly.
After putting my things away, I went outside and thanked Boss before asking him, "Did Fatty Zhang really come here last night?"
I handed a cigarette to the Boss, who accepted it without hesitation and said, "He really came. Can I mistake Zhang Fatty? I've known him longer than I've known you! Chen, can I mistake you?"
I felt that the Boss wasn't lying; he had no reason to deceive me.
I replied with a grunt and said to the Boss, "If Zhang Fatty comes, just call me and let me know. I don't have his number saved, and I need to find him for something."
The Boss responded, "Isn't he at the funeral home?"
I said, "He seems to have left again yesterday." I casually brushed it off with that comment, and fortunately, the Boss didn't press further.
After breakfast with Gao Ling, we went back to the room to sleep.
Since I hadn't slept well the night before, I closed my eyes and fell asleep almost immediately. I lost track of time, but after a while, I felt a cold hand touch my forehead.
Before long, I woke up in a panic. When I opened my eyes, I saw a corpse without eyes and blood flowing from its brow standing by my bed. I was nearly scared to death…
I couldn't catch my breath, my whole body tensed up, and beads of sweat formed on my forehead.
It was already dark, but I could clearly see the ghostly figure of the woman. My breathing became rapid.
Just then, she suddenly raised her hand as if to reach for me.
At that moment, my urn was still resting on me…
I dodged slightly, almost causing the urn to fall to the ground. I quickly pressed it down.
"What do you want?" I asked.
As soon as I spoke, the female ghost suddenly smiled. But her smile only made me feel even more terrified; it sent chills down my spine.
Her hand was raised, yet to fall...
I waited for her response. After a light laugh, she said, "Touching your forehead feels really nice..."
I was left speechless.
Damn it, she nearly scared me to death. She continued, "If I wanted to harm you, you would have been dead long ago."
That was true. Just moments ago, I had been lost in a dream; it wouldn't have been difficult for a ghost to take action against me.
After calming my emotions, I pulled the lamp closer.
In the light, the terrifying aura of the ghost diminished somewhat. However, she still looked quite eerie, like countless ants gnawing at my flesh from behind...
It was uncomfortable, but I had to stabilize my emotions.
I asked, "Could you let me know in advance the next time you come?"
The ghost replied, "Aren't I here to find you?" She tilted her head slightly. If she were an ordinary girl, that gesture might have seemed cute.
But with her tilting her head like that, I almost thought it would fall off.
After she spoke, I was utterly speechless. I had no choice but to continue our conversation from last night and asked, "How can I help you?"
Suddenly, her expression turned sorrowful as she said, "My name is Li Si. Actually, I was strangled to death by my boyfriend."
I was taken aback by her words.
This ghost had actually been killed by her boyfriend. I immediately asked, "Is your boyfriend a ghost too?"
"That's not it," Li Si shook her head. "My boyfriend was possessed by a ghost, and that's why he strangled me to death."
This time, I didn't interrupt Li Si; I let her continue. She spoke of how she and her boyfriend had always been in love. After graduating from college, they moved in together. One night, her usually gentle boyfriend suddenly became violent. When she asked him what was wrong, he suddenly grabbed her by the throat. She remembered his eyes were blood-red. After he killed her, her boyfriend vanished without a trace. However, after becoming a ghost herself, she realized that it wasn't her boyfriend who had killed her; it was the ghost that had done it.
After Li Si finished speaking, I understood everything.
No wonder Li Si didn't even know who her murderer was; she could only sense a lingering presence.
But the information Li Si provided left me at a loss for how to find the murderer. The clues were too abstract to investigate, unless I could find her boyfriend.
A person couldn't just be possessed out of nowhere; he must have come into contact with something unclean beforehand, which led to this outcome.
As I pondered this, the female ghost suddenly said to me, "I have a feeling that the next person to die will be you."
Her sudden declaration sent chills down my spine, especially coming from a ghost. I retorted, "Can you please not curse me?"
Li Si replied, "I'm not cursing you. I think we share something in common. He needs that commonality between us, which is why he killed me. And perhaps the next one will be you. Who knows who he's possessing now? He could be in my boyfriend or maybe even someone close to you—like Gao Ling..."
As soon as Li Si finished speaking, I felt a cold sweat break out all over me; my back felt icy...
