Living Funeral
I opened the text message and glanced at it. It read, "Chen Fei, the owner of those eyes is getting closer to you. You better be careful."
"Damn it," I thought, feeling a knot in my stomach. Just when I thought things were settling down, another wave of trouble hit!
"Gao Ling" asked me, "Fei, is your friend really okay?"
I shook my head, indicating I wasn't sure, then said, "He's fine; he just doesn't like dealing with strangers."
Gao Ling nodded and replied, "No wonder. Your brother is shy around new people. But that's not surprising! People with great abilities usually have strong personalities."
I agreed; Gao Ling's words made a lot of sense.
I stared at my phone screen, still focused on it, and then sent a message to "Fatty Zhang," asking who the owner of those eyes really was.
Fatty Zhang quickly replied, but all he sent back were two smiley face emojis.
I was at a loss for words. I soon shot him another message: "Aren't you supposed to tell me all your secrets? Why are you playing games with me now?"
This time it took five minutes for Fatty Zhang to respond. He said that everything should be taken step by step and that he'd give me what I wanted when the time was right. He also sent an image of a pair of eyes.
This Fatty Zhang...
I replied again, saying that I didn't have that much time to wait.
This time, Zhang was almost instant in his reply, saying, "You're right."
I quickly responded, "Then what are you waiting for? Hurry up and tell me everything you know." However, after sending that message, it felt like it had vanished into thin air. I waited until evening without receiving a reply, and I couldn't help but curse Zhang a few times, "Damn it, are you playing with me?"
That night, I was at Gao Ling's house waiting for Zhang Xun to arrive. I still hoped to uncover all these secrets.
The owner of those eyes belonging to Zhang was approaching me. Could it be that the mastermind behind everything was coming closer? Could the culprit be Brother Li?
At that moment, I couldn't help but feel suspicious. Gao Ling asked if I wanted to go out for dinner. I was afraid that Zhang Xun would come looking for me and find me gone, so I declined.
Gao Ling said, "Then I'll bring you something back."
Not long after Gao Ling left, around nine o'clock in the evening, there was a knock at the door. Peering through the peephole, I saw Zhang Xun standing outside. He looked much better than before; his condition had improved. I asked him, "Are you okay?"
Zhang shook his head to indicate he was fine and said, "Get your things ready; we need to leave now."
I asked, "Where are we going?"
Zhang replied, "To the place we visited in 198."
With that statement, he admitted that he had been alive in 198. I looked at Zhang Xun again and suddenly felt a sense of unfamiliarity.
It wasn't strange that he had lived through 198; what was strange was that after all these years, time seemed to have left no marks on his face.
I went inside and got my clothes and belongings ready.
After stepping out, I turned to Zhang Xun and said, "I'm ready. We can set off now."
To be honest, I was still a bit nervous. I had only met Zhang Xun a few times, and if we were to go out alone, it would be easy for him to overpower me given my skills.
Zhang Xun paused for a few seconds before saying, "Let's wait for your friend to join us."
I knew he meant Gao Ling, so I asked, "Why?"
Zhang Xun replied, "We need a means of transportation."
With that explanation from Zhang Xun, I had no objections. After all, Gao Ling had a car. Around ten o'clock, Gao Ling returned from outside.
I told Gao Ling that we needed to take care of something and asked if she wanted to come along.
Gao Ling seemed momentarily surprised but quickly responded, "Of course! I'm in!" Satisfied with her agreement, I said to her, "Pack your things; we’re getting ready to leave."
Once Gao Ling finished packing, we got into the car.
Gao Ling asked us, "Where are we going?"
Zhang Xun answered, "To Dragon Family Town Coffin Street."
"What’s that?" Gao Ling repeated the name after hearing it. Zhang Xun clearly didn't want to repeat himself, so I chimed in and said, "Dragon Family Town Coffin Street."
It seemed that Gao Ling had never heard of that place before. She entered the name into the car's navigation system and then remarked, "Wow, that's really far."
I told Gao Ling that this time, we might not make any money, and if you regret it now, it's not too late to back out.
Gao Ling remained calm and quickly replied, "Fei, you just don't understand. As the saying goes, where in life is there no opportunity?" Gao Ling's chatter was quite convincing.
Gao Ling drove us out at eleven o'clock at night, and we didn't stop for dinner until seven the next evening at Dragon Family Town Coffin Street.
As soon as we arrived, I felt a sense of eeriness. Zhang Xun began to survey the area, but there was a hint of confusion in his gaze.
There were streetlights in Dragon Family Town, and many shops were still open, yet for some reason, it gave off a gloomy and desolate vibe.
At that moment, a few children suddenly appeared on the street, running around with laughter and joy.
Gao Ling looked around and said, "This is Coffin Street!"
Zhang Xun shook his head but didn't say anything. Just then, I suddenly felt a sharp pain at the back of my head. I turned around to find a child had thrown a stone at me.
I called out to the brat, "Stop! What are you doing?"
The brat let out a mischievous laugh and ran away. I touched the back of my head; it wasn't anything serious, so I didn't chase after him.
Gao Ling said to me, "Fei, you have a face that looks like a bad person. Otherwise, why would that kid throw something at you?"
I couldn't be bothered to explain anything to Gao Ling.
But just then, Zhang Xun's expression suddenly changed. He turned to us and said, "Get out of the way! Don't stand in the street!"
Neither Gao Ling nor I reacted immediately; we were momentarily stunned until we heard the sound of a horn blowing.
Although the tune played by the horn was cheerful, it felt somewhat desolate when it echoed through the air.
Zhang Xun pulled us aside.
"It's a funeral procession," Zhang Xun said. "Remember not to look at the person carrying the Spirit Tablet."
After Zhang Xun spoke, we turned our backs. Generally, funerals are not held at night, but this one was taking place in the dark.
Gao Ling remarked, "Isn't this a bit ominous? We just stepped out and ran into a funeral procession." Zhang Xun urged us to remain silent.
At that moment, I noticed that the windows of the houses in the town, which had been open, were now all shut tight.
I wondered what was going on; it seemed that a nighttime funeral was indeed an eerie affair.
For some reason, my heart began to race, filled with an overwhelming sense of tension. The clear sound of the horn seemed to resonate within me, sparking my curiosity. I wanted to look but knew I shouldn’t.
It felt as if a cat were scratching at my heart, creating an unbearable itch. As the funeral procession drew closer, I suddenly heard sobbing—intermittent and sorrowful.
The sound grew nearer, but just then, chaos erupted as someone shouted, "We can't let them bury him like this!"
Then came the sounds of a scuffle, and everything descended into utter confusion.
Then I heard some faint sounds, and I had to stabilize the coffin to prevent it from falling.
"Someone died inexplicably, and you're just going to bury them like this? Do you think we have no family?"
Gao Ling asked, "What happened back there?"
Zhang Xun replied, "No matter what happened, you mustn't go look."
Like Gao Ling, I was very curious about what was happening behind us. We three turned our backs, and as some people were fighting, we got caught up in it. One person fell behind me and nearly knocked me over, but I managed to steady myself.
Then I heard someone behind me say, "Don't break Mother’s Spirit Tablet."
I didn't want to look back; I could already tell how chaotic it was. Gao Ling said that if we were going to hold a funeral, we should do it properly without fighting. Why were they brawling at this late hour?
I felt anxious and took out my phone to check the time; it was already past eight in the evening.
But just as I put my phone back in my pocket, a sudden cry of pain rang out. Someone rushed in front of me and without saying a word shoved something into my hands, saying, "Hold this for me." When I focused my eyes, I realized it was a Spirit Tablet.
