Living Funeral
The sudden remark from Zhang Xun truly startled us.
At that moment, Gao Ling and I had not yet turned around. My mind raced as I tried to figure out how to respond to Zhang Xun. I couldn't just say we were leaving because we thought he was problematic.
According to Gao Ling, it would be a simple matter for Zhang Xun to deal with the two of us, and that was indeed true. The night was pitch black, and I felt an overwhelming sense of tension.
If Zhang Xun was really as Gao Ling suggested, we would be in serious trouble.
But then Gao Ling said to me, "Fei, you run ahead. Keep going straight; there's an open door up ahead. Hide inside for a while."
After Gao Ling finished speaking, I was stunned for a few seconds. Had Gao Ling been planning this all along? Or had he already suspected that Zhang Xun wasn't a good person?
But that didn't make sense; Gao Ling had previously admired Zhang Xun. I glanced at Gao Ling, about to speak, when Zhang Xun kicked him hard.
Gao Ling leaned forward but managed not to fall. Zhang Xun quickly struck again, but this time Gao Ling caught his foot with his hand and pulled back, landing a punch on Zhang Xun's shoulder.
Gao Ling shouted at me, "Fei, listen to me! You need to run!"
Once Zhang Xun steadied himself, he said to me, "Chen Fei, have you forgotten what I told you?" His voice remained calm.
I thought for a moment about what Zhang Xun had said to me before.
A phrase quickly surfaced in my mind: trust no one. But clearly, this was about Gao Ling!
Yet something felt off about Gao Ling. I knew his capabilities; how could he possibly go toe-to-toe with Zhang Xun?
Gao Ling insisted, "Fei, you don't need to worry about me. Just go! I can't hold him off for long."
Zhang Xun snorted coldly, "You're about to die, and you're still pretending." After saying this, he drew his wooden sword and smeared it with his own blood.
With his eyes closed, Zhang Xun quickly recited an incantation, finally uttering a single word: "Break." As the word fell, Zhang Xun thrust his sword forward. Gao Ling tried to dodge but failed to escape; the sword pierced directly into Gao Ling's shoulder, eliciting a pained scream.
White smoke began to rise, and something felt off—definitely off. There was something wrong with Gao Ling, and at that moment, I started to sense the danger.
I said to Gao Ling, "You're not Gao Ling, are you?"
Gao Ling replied, "Fei, what nonsense are you talking? This is Zhang Xun trying to harm us. Can't you see? Fei, hurry up!" There was a bitter tone in Gao Ling's voice.
I hesitated for a moment.
Zhang Xun's stance clearly indicated he intended to kill Gao Ling. If the person in front of me truly was Gao Ling, then I couldn't just stand by and watch him die.
So I said to Gao Ling, "If we're leaving, let's leave together."
But Gao Ling shouted back, "Fei, you should go! There's a house ahead that Zhang Xun wouldn't dare enter."
As soon as he said that, I realized he wasn't Gao Ling. I suddenly asked him, "How do you know there's a house ahead that Zhang Xun wouldn't dare enter?"
Gao Ling glared at me and said, "I..."
Before he could finish his sentence, he quickly approached me. I stepped back and declared, "You're not Gao Ling." He continued to close the distance while saying, "Fei, if you don't listen to me, you'll regret it."
White smoke was still rising from Gao Ling's shoulder, which only strengthened my belief that something was wrong.
I told him not to come any closer, but Gao Ling kept advancing. Zhang Xun followed closely behind. At that moment, Gao Ling gave me an unsettling feeling. Damn it! I no longer hesitated and turned to run.
But Gao Ling was chasing me from behind, calling my name.
It seemed there was indeed a problem. I no longer hesitated; I bit my finger until it bled and mentally visualized how to write the word "Decree." Then I slowed my pace. When Gao Ling got closer, I quickly wrote the two characters for "Decree," and a faint red light flickered in the air.
When Gao Ling touched it, he was immediately thrown backward, letting out a scream as he exclaimed, "Fei, how can you do this to me?"
I looked down at the fallen Gao Ling and said, "At this point, why are you still pretending? You’re not really Gao Ling."
Gao Ling lay motionless on the ground. Taking advantage of this moment, I pulled out my phone and called Gao Ling. The call connected quickly, and a voice answered on the other end.
"Is this Gao Ling? Where are you right now?" I asked.
"It's the middle of the night; where else would I be? Of course, I'm sleeping!" After hearing this, my anxious heart finally settled.
Just as I was about to put my phone back in my pocket, the imposter Gao Ling suddenly lunged at me. Caught off guard, I fell to the ground.
The fake Gao Ling desperately shouted at me, "Why don’t you believe me? Why won’t you trust me?"
As he spoke, he grabbed my neck with both hands. His act was so convincing that it made Zhang Xun's analysis seem credible. However, one thing was clear: if there were a chance to escape, Gao Ling would definitely run away with me—perhaps even faster than I could.
The possibility of Gao Ling sacrificing himself to save me seemed slim.
The imposter continued to choke me while demanding to know why. Damn it! You should give me a chance to explain!
I was on the verge of suffocation when Zhang Xun stepped forward, grasped a wooden sword, and plunged it directly into Gao Ling's head.
The fake Gao Ling let out a cry of pain that gradually transformed into a swirl of white smoke. The hands that had been choking me finally vanished.
Only one piece of clothing finally landed on me.
I took a deep breath of fresh air as Zhang Xun reached out a hand to me. I grabbed Zhang Xun's hand and stood up.
The clothing fell to the ground.
I asked Zhang Xun, "What on earth is going on?"
Zhang Xun replied, "Someone is plotting against you."
"But how did it turn into Gao Ling's appearance?"
Zhang Xun said, "Perhaps someone tampered with Gao Ling."
After Zhang Xun spoke, I became worried about Gao Ling and said to Zhang Xun, "Let's hurry back and check on her." Zhang Xun agreed. On the way, I tried calling Gao Ling, but the call didn't go through. My anxiety increased; I hoped nothing had happened to her!
Feeling anxious, I quickened my pace. When we arrived, I found Gao Ling sitting on the bed.
When Gao Ling saw me, she asked, "Where have you two been?"
Before I could respond, Zhang Xun said, "Turn around quickly."
At that moment, Gao Ling's face was pale as if she had put on a deathly makeup, yet she seemed unaware of the situation. I urged her, "Just listen to him!"
Gao Ling quickly turned around. After taking a glance, Zhang Xun instructed, "Take off your clothes."
Gao Ling stammered, "Why should I take off my clothes?"
"Zhang Xun said, 'If you don't want to die, hurry up and take it off.' Seeing Gao Ling hesitating, I urged him, 'Damn it, move faster. There are no women here, so what are you shy about?'
Gao Ling replied, 'I have a scar on my back.'
I was taken aback.
Noticing my urgency, Gao Ling finally moved a bit quicker and stripped off his clothes. Once he was undressed, I saw a scar on his back that looked like a centipede, about ten centimeters long.
Hmm, how come I didn't notice this when we were bathing in the river last time?
But there was no time to dwell on that now. Zhang Xun stepped closer to examine Gao Ling's back and then asked him, 'Are you afraid of pain?'
Gao Ling responded, 'What do you mean?'
I was puzzled by Zhang Xun's question as well and asked him, 'Did you discover something?'
Zhang Xun motioned for me to come over and pointed to a spot on Gao Ling's back. He pressed down on the skin of Gao Ling's back, making it appear even tighter. At that moment, Zhang Xun asked me, 'Can you see it clearly?'
My expression changed as I asked Zhang Xun, 'What is that?'
Hearing our conversation, Gao Ling seemed anxious and asked, 'What are you two talking about? Is there something growing on my back? That scar has its reasons.'"
