Living Funeral
At that moment, Gao Qing suddenly shouted, "Chen Fei, heart." As soon as she finished speaking, a wave of intense pain surged through my chest, and for a moment, I found it difficult to breathe.
I looked down and saw the witch's hand plunged into my abdomen. Then I heard her cold voice say, "I want you dead."
That hand almost reached out through my back. It hurt so much, damn it, it hurt. I could hear Gao Ling and Zhao Fan's voices in my ears.
But just then, I heard the witch's scream, and I saw her collapse, pulling her hand out of my belly. She fell to the ground, crying out in agony, and soon her body began to convulse while my vision gradually blurred.
Then I collapsed onto the ground as well.
Next, I heard Gao Ling shout, "Quick, get him to the hospital!"
"We're already in the hospital," Zhao Fan replied.
"Then what are we waiting for?"
I could no longer move; blood was pooling around me. I had no idea how long it had been when I opened my eyes. Above me was a white ceiling; glancing up confirmed it was a drop ceiling. The familiar, pungent smell of toxic disinfectant filled the air.
Then I heard someone say, "Fei, you finally woke up."
I groggily asked, "Am I dead?"
Gao Ling replied, "You almost died, but you didn't." She handed me a piece of red paper and continued, "Fei, this red paper is quite eerie! When it was placed on that witch's head, she started convulsing on the ground as if she had taken too many stimulants and eventually turned into a puddle of blood."
"No way?" I asked in astonishment.
Gao Ling said, "At first, I thought she was human; turns out she was an evil entity. Her body was strange—not just a simple human body. What exactly it was, I can't figure out; all I know is she turned into a puddle of blood when she died."
At that moment, sunlight streamed into the room, warming the hospital ward. Gao Ling continued, "Fei, that's not even the most explosive news."
I looked at Gao Ling in confusion. What could be more explosive? Gao Ling said, "Do you remember the woman who shared your hospital room back then?"
I hummed in acknowledgment, and Gao Ling asked, "Do you know what kind of person she is?"
"Damn it," I thought, lying on the hospital bed, wanting to curse Gao Ling. Why couldn't she just get to the point? Did she have to drag this out?
I was too lazy to respond to Gao Ling. When I fell silent, she continued on her own. "She's the director's daughter, lurking around this hospital. She has some skills, and honestly, she's a bit eerie, which is why everyone is afraid of her. She's been here for three years, doing all sorts of strange things, and during her time here, quite a few people have died. But she's not a bad person; she's here to exorcise spirits and dispel evil. If it weren't for her vouching for us this time, we wouldn't have received our payment." With that, Gao Ling pulled out a paper bag and opened it to reveal a stack of red bills inside.
I glanced at it and said, "Keep it safe." Gao Ling smiled and replied, "Sure."
At that moment, I wondered if that woman had no one managing her in this hospital; it turned out there was a connection after all! I paused for a moment before asking, "How long have I been unconscious in the hospital?"
Gao Ling replied, "Just one day! But seriously, your healing speed is like you've seen a ghost—remarkably fast."
I was at a loss for words. I said to Gao Ling, "Could you get me something to eat?"
At that moment, it was just me and Gao Ling in the ward; Zhao Fan and Gao Qing were nowhere to be seen.
"Sure," Gao Ling said. After she left, it wasn't long before Wang Yan walked in. After glancing at me, she said, "You really have a knack for hospitals; you get injured every few days while hospitalized. You're the strangest patient I've ever seen."
I could only smile bitterly at Wang Yan. I didn't want to be hospitalized either; I just had terrible luck.
I asked Wang Yan, "When can I be discharged?"
Wang Yan replied, "Not long now; you can leave in three days." Hearing this reassured me somewhat. Suddenly, Wang Yan changed the subject and said, "Did you know? The hospital hired a master this time to eliminate the ghosts here. Now the hospital should finally be safe from deaths."
From what Wang Yan said, it was clear she had no idea we were behind this. Of course, I didn't say anything.
I looked at Wang Yan and told her, "Stop thinking about ghosts; there can't be that many ghosts in the world!"
Wang Yan playfully stuck out her tongue at me. Honestly, I didn't want to think about such things either. But recently, reading this book had been quite unsettling; I couldn't help but wonder what was going on in the author's mind—especially with someone named Age writing such eerie content.
I remained silent, uninterested in the conversation. Wang Yan exchanged a few more words before someone outside called for her, prompting her to leave.
The atmosphere grew quiet after she departed. After finishing the meal Gao Ling had brought back, darkness soon enveloped the surroundings. Just as night fell, the woman in red appeared beside me, calling my name, Chen Lang. I responded with a nod.
I reassured her that I was fine while she gently traced circles on my forehead with her fingers.
"Chen Lang," the woman in red said, "my greatest wish is for you to never encounter any trouble or harm, and to live a peaceful life."
I sighed and replied, "Don't worry; we will both be safe."
As soon as I finished speaking, an elderly cough echoed through the air. The sound drew my attention away from the woman in red, and I turned to look behind me. However, upon seeing who it was, my expression changed.
The Taoist priest appeared to have aged ten years in an instant, his posture hunched over. But could a soul truly grow old? This question surged through my mind.
Yet it was undeniable that the priest looked significantly older. I asked, "Priest, what happened to you?"
He replied, "Chen Fei, do you remember when I asked you for a favor?"
I nodded; I recalled it well. As long as his request wasn't too outrageous, I would agree to help him. I waited for him to continue.
What worried me most was the possibility that he had lost his ashes. If he found out, would he kill me?
The priest said, "Chen Fei, I need you to go to Snake Skin Gully."
I inquired, "What do you need to go there for?"
He explained, "I need you to find me a body. I require a body; otherwise, I will die."
Hearing this made me think: weren't you already dead? However, I kept that thought to myself and told him firmly, "I can't do anything involving living people."
The Taoist said, "No need for a living person, just a corpse buried in Snake Skin Gully. You just need to help me find it."
I glanced at the Taoist with curiosity. "Is it that simple?"
The Taoist nodded, but warned that time couldn't be delayed; if it was too late, he might not be able to wait any longer.
I asked him, "How about three days?" After a moment of thought, the Taoist agreed. Once he finished speaking, he left, leaving only the woman in red and me together.
Suddenly, the woman in red said to me, "Chen Lang, are you really going to Snake Skin Gully?"
I replied with a nod, but I noticed a troubled expression on her face. I asked, "Is there a problem?"
She shook her head. "No, no. Chen Lang, you should rest for now. I have something to take care of."
I agreed, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. After they left, I took out the Suppression of the Hundred Demons Diagram again and looked at it closely. This piece of red paper had such significant power; what was it made from?
Was this red paper covered in blood? As I stared at it, I felt increasingly uneasy. Why would Zhang Xun give me something so important? Was it meant to save my life?
What did the pattern on this paper truly signify? I lifted the red paper up, and under the light, I quickly saw a woman's face appear on it.
I was startled when my phone rang. On the line was Zhang Xun, who had just come out from Coffin Street.
