Living Funeral
I said to Zhao Fan, "Don't scare me."
Zhao Fan replied, "Just now, the corpse's eyes seemed to open for a moment." I glanced at Zhao Fan with suspicion. It wasn't that I didn't believe him; it was mainly because Gao Qing and Zhang Xun, standing under the light of the corpse, showed no reaction at all.
I continued, "Could it be that you saw it wrong?" After I said this, Zhao Fan was momentarily stunned. He looked again and then said, "Huh, could it really be that I made a mistake?" Zhao Fan began to doubt himself.
I didn't pay much attention to Zhao Fan because Cui Fang had climbed up a tree and was moving forward while holding onto a branch. Her actions looked quite dangerous.
She was calling out Guang's name and crying uncontrollably.
I shouted a few times, but Cui Fang wouldn't listen. Gao Ling said, "Fei, if she falls, she’ll definitely be crippled if not dead!"
I told Gao Ling not to be such a pessimist.
Cui Fang was being reckless! Damn it, it seemed like only one person could go up there to see if they could bring her down; she was acting like a madwoman!
Damn it, why drag us into this? At this moment, I felt particularly eerie; the key issue was how Guang's corpse ended up here.
As Cui Fang was about to get closer to Guang's corpse, I started climbing the tree too. However, just as I was about to ascend, Zhang Xun pressed down on my shoulder.
Zhang Xun shook his head at me and said, "This is all too eerie; don't act rashly or you might fall for something."
I replied, "People are dying; what more can we fall for?" Zhang Xun still shook his head.
Zhao Fan also chimed in, "Brother Fei, I think you should stay down. Look at that branch; it can barely support one person. There's already someone hanging from it above, and if another climbs up, that branch will be in terrible shape. It's probably at its limit now."
I glanced at the tree branch and found Zhao Fan's words to be reasonable. With a corpse hanging from the branch and another person climbing up, it could snap at any moment.
If I went up there, it would definitely break, and then there would be more than one person injured. I took a moment to calm myself down.
Gao Ling was calling from below, "Miss Cui Fang, come down! We can help you get the body down." Although Gao Ling shouted loudly, there was no response from the tree.
Cui Fang's hand was already reaching for the light of the corpse. I had already urged her enough; if something unexpected happened again, I wouldn’t be able to care about anything else.
I shone my flashlight upward, my gaze fixed tightly on the scene.
In this silent night, only the sound of the wind and Cui Fang's sobbing remained. Zhao Fan said, "Now it's all up to fate."
Indeed, it really was all up to fate now.
At that moment, the branch above began to sway, and I felt a cold sweat break out for Cui Fang.
But there was nothing I could do to persuade her. I held my breath as Cui Fang's hand finally touched the light. However, in the next instant, a sharp crack echoed through the air—the branch snapped. Cui Fang fell from the branch, and instinctively, I rushed forward to catch her, but I was still a moment too late. Cui Fang hit the ground without even letting out a scream, lying there motionless.
Time seemed to freeze at that moment. My breathing grew heavy; had I just witnessed someone die right in front of me?
A chill ran down my back.
Seconds ticked by painfully slowly until Gao Ling finally spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper. "Is she dead?"
The atmosphere turned eerie. At that moment, Zhang Xun moved, walking toward Cui Fang's body.
The body of Guang fell to the ground, and I moved closer. As I approached, I noticed that Cui Fang's hand was tightly gripping Guang's. Could it really be true love? Such thoughts raced through my mind.
Zhang Xun and I stood in a line, and when we were about a meter apart, Zhang Xun said, "He's dead."
"Is that it? Just like that?" My tone carried a hint of reluctance. A living person had just died, and it felt as if I were in a dream—a nightmare, to be precise.
I took a deep breath, feeling my body tremble slightly; it was genuinely frightening.
A living person had just died like this. Zhang Xun and I exchanged glances, unsure of what to do next.
Although we didn't know how to react, the corpse seemed to provide an answer. Cui Fang, who had been lying lifeless on the ground, suddenly began to twitch and move.
It looked incredibly eerie. Zhang Xun pulled me back a few steps, and then something unbelievable happened.
Cui Fang, who had been lying there, suddenly sprang up from the ground and called out Guang's name. To my astonishment, Guang also got up.
The two of them quickly took each other's hands and ran off. I was left dumbfounded—what was happening?
Gao Ling, Zhao Fan, and Gao Qing rushed over, but we couldn't catch up with them in time.
Wasn't he dead? How could he come back so quickly? This was too eerie. The five of us stood there watching the two corpses running ahead.
Gao Ling asked, "What on earth is going on?" Panic tinged her voice.
Zhang Xun muttered to himself, "Are they really dead?"
Cui Fang turned to glance at us, and I saw her eyes glowing with a strange red light. What the hell was going on? I was completely bewildered. Was Cui Fang dead or alive? How did she just run off like that?
"She's not dead," Gao Qing said.
"Then why did she take that corpse?" I asked.
"Was that corpse faked?" Gao Ling chimed in.
At that moment, I felt completely out of the loop. Damn it, after a while, I asked, "Should we chase her?" What kind of place was Snake Skin Gully? It was filled with all sorts of bizarre occurrences.
I couldn't help but glance behind me; thankfully, there was nothing unusual back there. Cui Fang quickly disappeared into the eerie night, holding the light's hand.
I pulled out my phone to check the time—it was almost three in the morning. We still hadn't found any trace of the coffin. Now, on top of everything else, this strange incident had occurred.
We were all likely shocked, so none of us could calm down. We stood there in a daze for a moment. I took out a cigarette, lit it, and took a drag. Damn it, this was really messed up. How could something like this happen?
After regaining my composure, Gao Ling cursed under his breath—not really to insult anyone but mainly to bolster his own courage and keep himself alert.
We continued walking forward. How were we supposed to find that coffin? Suddenly, I remembered that Cui Fang and I had seen a locked room around here. Maybe we could check it out.
Although I didn't know exactly where it was, finding a room would surely be easier than searching for a coffin.
I quickly shared my thoughts with everyone. Zhang Xun and Gao Qing had no objections, and naturally, Zhao Fan and Gao Ling didn't either.
Who knows? Once we got there, we might even get lucky and stumble upon the coffin.
I was particularly curious about the situation with Cui Fang and Guang. Damn it, these two had nothing to do with me before, but now they were somehow involved.
Gao Ling suddenly said, "Fei, do you think Cui Fang has been deceiving us all along?"
I replied to Gao Ling, "It's not impossible. I really didn't understand what just happened."
Zhao Fan added, "Then there must be something wrong with Cui Fang."
The way those two corpses fled so quickly had left us stunned. We followed the path ahead and soon discovered a house not far in front of us.
I thought to myself that Cui Fang hadn't lied about this; there really was a house ahead. And as we got closer, we found that the door was indeed locked.
At this point, Cui Fang and Guang had vanished without a trace, but the strange eyes left a deep impression on me.
The house was peculiar as well—there were no windows around, just a single door, which was locked.
Zhao Fan asked, "Brother Fei, should we go inside? If you want to enter, I can unlock this door."
It was pitch dark at night. I looked around; the ground here was relatively flat. I said, "Go ahead." As soon as I finished speaking, Zhao Fan got to work.
Just then, a series of knocking sounds echoed from the door.
