Living Funeral
“Ghost Marriage?” Gao Ling asked.
I looked at the ghostly procession ahead, the red sedan chair floating in the air, with no one carrying it. This must be what they call a ghostly wedding. Gao Qing said, “We’ve encountered a Ghost Marriage. If we block their path, it will break the joy, and we will definitely face retaliation.”
Damn it, how unlucky can this get?
It was already four in the morning. Choosing this time for a Ghost Marriage is practically asking for trouble, isn’t it?
At this hour, the Yin energy should be gradually weakening; logically, they shouldn’t have chosen this time. But they did—was there some unavoidable reason? I thought to myself as the Ghost Marriage procession drew closer.
I said, “Let’s hide for now.”
We were on a main road, with dense woods lining the side. I suggested we slip into the forest. They had no objections, so we quickly entered the trees. This was my first encounter with a Ghost Marriage, and honestly, I was quite curious.
Gao Qing then told us, “If you don’t want to attract trouble, it’s best to keep your eyes closed.”
As the red sedan chair floated nearer, we quickly shut our eyes—better safe than sorry.
Zhao Fan remarked, “This Snake Skin Gully is really Eerie. Ordinary people have no chance of survival here.”
Suddenly, I recalled what the old man had told me: that anyone with the surname Chen who entered here would die. But now it seemed that statement might be false because I felt that any living person entering here could meet their end. At least for me, I hadn’t become a special case.
Soon, a chilling sensation enveloped us; it was unmistakably the red sedan chair approaching.
I felt a wave of anxiety wash over me as Zhang Xun reminded me, "It's best not to open your eyes."
I understood the risks involved, so I wouldn’t be foolish enough to look. I kept my eyes tightly shut, but the chilling sensation only intensified. I initially thought it would pass quickly, yet for some reason, it lingered far longer than expected.
Panic began to creep into my mind. I wondered if the others were feeling the same way.
I stood still, not moving. Suddenly, it felt as though a hand had grasped mine and was pulling me forward. Something felt off, so I planted my feet firmly and refused to move ahead, but that hand held on tightly.
Curiosity bubbled within me; I wanted to break free, but it was much harder than I anticipated.
I called out for Zhang Xun, but no one responded. This was eerie! My curiosity peaked as I desperately wanted to see who was holding my hand. Damn it! Why wasn’t Zhang Xun answering? This didn’t feel right! I shouted for Gao Ling, but my voice seemed to vanish into thin air without a reply.
Had we already separated? Were they no longer with me? But I hadn’t moved an inch.
My desire to open my eyes grew stronger, yet recalling Gao Qing’s warning left me conflicted. I called out the names of all four of us, but no one answered.
Damn it! That hand still held onto me. Then a voice spoke softly, “The ones you were looking for have long been taken by me.”
“Is it Gao Ling? The skinny one in black? He’s already gone.”
The voice was gentle and soothing, sending shivers down my spine. “Zhang Xun has also left. The other woman abandoned you long ago; now you’re all alone here. Why not come with me?”
I protested, “That’s impossible! They wouldn’t leave me behind.”
She let out a melodious laugh that was enchanting yet unsettling. When I denied her words, she said, “If you don’t believe me, open your eyes and see for yourself if they are still here.”
At that moment, I really wanted to open my eyes. I called out "Gao Ling" one last time, but when there was no response, I finally opened my eyes. As soon as I did, I realized I was wrong, for the woman before me was none other than Cui Fang.
She was dressed in a stunning red bridal gown, looking several times more beautiful than before.
She said, "I've been waiting for you for a long time. Men with the surname Chen have a certain charm, and you are even more captivating than all the other Chens."
Our eyes met, and I felt as if I were entranced, unable to look away. I asked, "What do you want?"
In a seductive voice, she replied, "Of course, to marry you and then consummate our union."
Damn it, I had caught the eye of another ghost. But I sensed that Cui Fang definitely had ulterior motives. From the beginning, she probably wasn't human at all. Yet none of us had noticed in Snake Skin Gully—not even Zhang Xun or Gao Qing.
I turned to glance at Zhang Xun and the others; they were still standing there with their eyes closed, completely motionless. I called out to them, but there was no response.
Cui Fang smiled and said, "Stop calling them; even if you scream until your throat is raw, they won't hear you."
I looked at Cui Fang and asked, "Are you human or a ghost?"
With one hand gently gripping my chin, she replied, "I am neither human nor ghost."
I asked, "Then what are you?"
Cui Fang let out a tinkling laugh and said, "Guess."
Guess? Damn it! At such a critical moment, she wanted me to guess? The worst part was that I realized I couldn't move at all. It dawned on me how Guang had died so tragically—foaming at the mouth—he must have been drained of his essence by Cui Fang.
Then, she put on a tragic performance in front of me.
"Cui Fang said, 'Husband, come ride with me.'" She took my hand and led me forward. My body involuntarily followed her; of course, I didn't want to go! Damn it, I was quickly pulled toward the sedan chair.
I cursed under my breath. It was over; even though I had the Suppression of the Hundred Demons Diagram on me, it wouldn't help.
Once inside the sedan chair, it was lifted and carried forward. I sat there in the red chair, feeling anxious. I couldn't help but ask, "Where are you taking me?"
"To our wedding chamber, of course."
Damn it, I had a bad feeling about this. I thought to myself, why do all these unfortunate things happen to me? This is just ridiculous. The sedan chair continued moving, and I was curious why I couldn't move at all.
The chair floated forward until it finally stopped at a location. When it was set down, I stepped out and found myself surrounded by desolation, with many lonely tombs nearby.
These lonely tombs were exposed without any gravestones; the only two graves with stones had no mounds of earth.
I was puzzled about what was going on here.
Damn it, is this really the wedding chamber? This place looked more like a site for seeking death. My heart began to sink.
Cui Fang said, "I originally thought you would die in that house, but unexpectedly you all came out alive. Otherwise, I could have just gone to collect your soul. Now we have to go through this drama; Husband, our marriage truly has its ups and downs."
I looked at Cui Fang and said, "What the hell are you bringing me here for?"
At that moment, I wasn't holding back anymore; clearly, she had no good intentions.
"Cui Fang" smiled and said, "Husband, don't be angry. We'll soon enjoy the sweet after the bitter."
I increasingly felt that she was becoming twisted, and I didn't want to speak anymore. She held my hand and walked ahead, saying, "Husband, let's go see how our new home looks."
I numbly followed her. Right now, aside from my mouth and consciousness, I had no control over this body.
She led me to a grave pit and said, "Husband, this is our new home. Do you like it? Soon we will consummate our marriage here."
I looked at the grave pit, where there was an open coffin.
Damn it, my palms were sweating coldly as I thought about what to do now. I felt a wave of panic rising within me.
I asked her, "Why do you always choose someone with the surname Chen?"
She suddenly let out a cold laugh and replied, "That's because every good thing belongs to those with the surname Chen."
Damn it, I was starting to believe the old man's words; anyone with the surname Chen who came here would die. She took my hand and began to walk toward the coffin. As one of my feet stepped inside, she slowly pressed me down into the coffin. Once I lay flat inside, an overwhelming sense of terror surged through me.
