Living Funeral
The corpse was unmistakably Axiang, and it had already begun to show signs of decomposition.
Having been dead for at least an hour, this would leave Wu the Fatty pale with fright, while the bride remained surprisingly calm, cursing, "This is bad luck! I just got married and now I have to deal with this mess. You gentlemen, Uncle, is this how you handle Axiang's situation?"
Wu the Fatty remained silent, too afraid to speak.
At that moment, the villagers began to murmur among themselves, mostly blaming Axiang.
Just a while ago, she had asked me to return to the city. How could she suddenly be dead? I didn't know how Wu the Fatty had gotten involved with Axiang, but it was clear now that he was a scoundrel.
Damn it, how could such a jerk manage to attract two women? Truly blind!
The bride wasn't any better; she was as venomous as they come, perfectly fitting the saying about a woman's heart being the most poisonous.
She continued speaking, "I ask you gentlemen, Uncle, to help me get rid of her. As for what happens next, that's up to you."
I couldn't believe it—wasn't anyone going to call the police? The lack of legal awareness among these people was terrifying. Were they even human?
Zhang Xun's expression changed slightly, but he said nothing.
Soon enough, someone stepped forward to carry away the body without hesitation. I tried to tell them to put it down, but my words fell on deaf ears.
I called the police to report a hanging, but they told me that suicides were not under their jurisdiction...
I was speechless. What kind of situation was this? After hanging up, Gao Ling said, "The mountains are high and the emperor is far away; let's go." This was indeed beyond our control. If it escalated further, it wouldn't concern us at all.
This truly felt like a tragedy.
I really didn't want to stay in this cursed place any longer, so I turned to Gao Ling and said, "Let's leave now."
"Gao Ling said, 'Alright, I can't stay here any longer either.'
'Damn it,' I cursed under my breath and then got into Gao Ling's car. The three of us left the place, and in the car, I turned to Zhang Xun and Gao Ling and said, 'There's something I need to tell you.'
'What is it?' Gao Ling asked.
I replied, 'The bridesmaid came to see me about half an hour ago.'
'What?'
At that moment, it was just past two in the morning, which meant Axiang had come to see me around one o'clock, and her time of death was likely around ten.
Zhang Xun asked, 'What did she want from you?'
I told Zhang Xun, 'She returned my clothes and wanted to go home with me. Of course, not to my home, but to her own.'
Gao Ling exclaimed, 'That Wu the Fatty is such a scumbag! How did I not see it before?'
Wu the Fatty was definitely no good; he was simply a jerk.
'Damn it,' I thought. I shouldn't have come here. The people here are ten times more disgusting than Old Witch; they make my heart ache ten times more.
I took a deep breath.
Gao Ling was talking to me while driving.
Zhang Xun suddenly broke the silence and said, 'Chen Fei, if that dead woman asks for your help, you must not agree.'
'Why not?'
Zhang Xun replied, 'Helping a ghost will definitely bring trouble.'
As Zhang Xun and I were talking, Gao Ling suddenly slammed on the brakes. Neither Zhang Xun nor I were prepared for it and both lurched forward. My head spun from the sudden movement, and I turned to Gao Ling and said, 'What are you doing? How are you driving?'"
Gao Ling said, "Oh no, I think I hit someone." With that, she opened the car door and got out.
Hearing this, I immediately became alert and hurriedly got out of the car as well. Zhang Xun followed me, but when we reached the front of the car, we found no one there.
I asked Gao Ling, "Where is the person?"
Gao Ling replied, "No, really! I actually hit someone; that's why I slammed on the brakes."
But there was no one around now. Could it be a ghost? A chill ran down my spine; this place felt eerie and strange.
Zhang Xun was also looking around but didn’t say a word.
I looked thoroughly but still didn’t find anything. After standing up, I said to Gao Ling, "Maybe you drank too much and are seeing things." Gao Ling insisted, "I really saw it with my own eyes!"
I thought she must have been drunk. I told her that since no one was hurt, we should just leave; it was quite chilly outside.
Gao Ling still looked confused. I said to her, "You're not happy that no one was hurt?"
As I opened the car door to get back in, Zhang Xun suddenly called out to me. I turned to look at him; his face was dark and grim. I suddenly felt something was off about Zhang Xun's expression. Before I could react, he lunged at me.
Seeing Zhang Xun's fierce grin made me uneasy, and soon we were grappling with each other.
I threw a punch at him and said, "Do you think I'm afraid of you?"
I kept attacking while cursing, "You think you can sneak attack me? Not a chance!" I charged at Zhang Xun like a madman. At that moment, I heard Gao Ling shout, "Fei, what are you doing?"
Zhang Xun didn’t hold back either; he delivered a swift chop to my neck, and then everything went black.
When I woke up again, I found myself back in the car. We had already reached the city. As I opened my eyes, I felt a pain in my neck and asked, "What happened to me?"
I glanced at Zhang Xun; he pulled out a piece of red paper for me. The paper looked similar to ordinary talisman paper.
However, this red paper had my birth date and time written on it.
"Someone has placed this on your back, affecting your mind," Zhang Xun said.
I asked, "Who?"
"If I'm not mistaken, it should be the Old Witch. This time, the Old Witch is targeting you."
Damn, the Old Witch is really persistent! She actually came here. Gao Ling said, "Fei, do you realize how fierce you were just now? How wrong?"
I didn't know.
Gao Ling handed me her phone and said, "I didn't have time to record a video, so I took a picture for you."
I took the phone and saw myself in the photo, looking monstrous, while Zhang Xun appeared calm. I had some recollection of that moment, but I distinctly remembered Zhang Xun looking fierce; how did it turn into me?
It seemed I had truly fallen for the Old Witch's trick; she was indeed relentless.
At that moment, I said to Gao Ling, "The one you bumped into was probably the Old Witch."
Zhang Xun nodded and said, "It should be her. However, it's impossible to kill her by collision."
The Old Witch is too eerie. I couldn't help but take a sharp breath. I asked Zhang Xun if there was any way to resolve this. Zhang Xun shook his head and replied that the Old Witch is elusive; without finding her in person, it's hard to solve this issue.
I nodded, understanding. I felt uneasy but had no choice. By the time we reached the city center, it was almost four in the morning. Gao Ling parked the car, and I wanted to buy a pack of cigarettes.
Zhang Xun and Gao Ling went upstairs first. The Old Witch had just plotted against me; she probably wouldn't show up again so soon. This incident nearly turned me and Zhang Xun into enemies. Frustrated, I went to a convenience store that opened at four and bought a pack of soft white sand cigarettes. As I walked back, after just a few steps, I saw someone—it was Axiang.
"Axiang called out to me," and I froze for a moment. Axiang really followed me here. Having seen many ghosts before, I wasn't particularly scared upon seeing her.
Axiang said to me, "Can you do me a favor?" After she spoke, I recalled Zhang Xun's warning not to help Axiang. Although this matter was indeed cruel for her...
After thinking for a moment, I replied to Axiang, "I'm sorry, but I really can't help you."
"Why?" Axiang asked.
I fell silent for a moment and said, "After all, we are on different paths—humans and ghosts, separated by the realms of life and death. The living cannot assist the dead."
Axiang stared at me, and to my surprise, there was a hint of spring in her eyes. I knew she had died a tragic and unjust death, but I still had to heed Zhang Xun's words.
Not long after I spoke, Axiang suddenly laughed and said to me, "Who says I'm dead? I’m not dead at all."
I replied to Axiang, "Don't deceive yourself. I saw your corpse with my own eyes; there’s no way that could be false."
Axiang suddenly put on a serious face and said, "If you don't believe me, come touch my body."
I thought to myself: …maybe not!
Axiang continued, "What are you thinking? I want you to check if my body has any warmth. Dead people don’t have warmth, right? If I were truly dead, I wouldn’t have any. But I do now; come feel for yourself."
I looked at Axiang with suspicion but decided to approach her with a mindset of curiosity. She grabbed my hand and placed it on her own. I initially intended to pull away, but when I touched her skin—oh! It seemed warm.
Axiang then took my hand and placed it on her forehead. Wow, her forehead felt warm too.
It is known that dead bodies and spirits absolutely do not have warmth; that is something that cannot be faked. Yet here was Axiang, radiating heat. Could it be that Axiang really isn’t dead?
