Living Funeral
After hearing that calm voice, I turned my head and glanced back. The command to stop held no hint of malice.
As I looked back, I was momentarily bewildered, unable to grasp the situation. Standing behind me was someone who looked exactly like me, still covered in blood. With a tone of skepticism, I asked, "Are you Chen Fei?"
This was clearly the Chen Fei from that time and space. Could he see me? It seemed that he truly could.
I asked, "Are you him?"
It felt strange to ask myself this question, but it had to be done.
After I spoke, Chen Fei replied, "Without him, I am you, and you are me."
I inquired, "How can you see me?"
Chen Fei said, "I've always been able to see you since you entered this coffin."
Looking at myself, I was starting to feel confused. "What is happening?"
Chen Fei didn’t answer my question but instead asked me, "You’ve remembered the past, haven’t you?" I nodded in response.
Chen Fei continued, "This life hasn’t been great. After sleeping for a hundred years, now that I’m awake, I should complete what was left unfinished back then."
I asked, "Is it your lifelong ambition?"
Talking to myself felt odd; it was as if two versions of Chen Fei were conversing. At that moment, I didn’t know what I wanted; my mood had grown heavy. What did it matter if I regained those memories?
The Chen Fei from back then hadn’t succeeded. Could I succeed now? Suddenly, I felt a wave of insecurity wash over me. Taking a deep breath, my heart began to race with unease. Chen Fei asked, "What are you thinking about right now?"
I said, "I don't want anything."
Chen Fei replied, "I know what you're thinking. You're just worried that your abilities aren't enough, right?" I looked at Chen Fei in surprise. He continued, "You don't need to be shocked that I can read your thoughts. It's because I am you, and you are me."
I asked, "But shouldn't you be dead by now?"
Chen Fei suddenly laughed and said, "We've already come out of the memories. Right now, you're just sleeping in that coffin. This is the last remnant of your soul, which is the Forty-Ninth Ghost Script."
"Is the Forty-Ninth Ghost Script a remnant of the soul? But Hu Qingming isn't; isn't the last Book of Ten Thousand Ghosts always golden?" I quickly voiced my inner doubts. After asking, Chen Fei responded, "Is everything I release true? Whether it's real or fake, only I can confirm it with my own words. But then again, sometimes I do lie."
I was left speechless.
I was completely bewildered. The Chen Fei from back then was indeed a cunning old fox, calculating everything—probably not much different from Li Guang.
Chen Fei seemed to know what I was thinking again. He said, "I'm still far behind that old guy. He can predict the future, while I cannot." I replied, "But hasn't it already come to this point?"
Chen Fei said, "Without immortality, you wouldn't even know if you could survive."
I paused for a few seconds and suddenly recalled what Li Guang had told me: that your junior brother could save you. Looking back now, it truly was astonishingly accurate.
In the end, it was Jiang Changsheng who saved me. That old man was indeed terrifying; however, Jiang Changsheng was also quite impressive for having left a backup plan as if he had known I would die.
Chen Fei smiled and said, "Don't think too much; what is meant to come will always come. You should return to your original self."
I said, "The original self," as the Forty-Ninth Ghost Script approached me. In an instant, we merged into one. A wave of intense pain surged through my heart, and soon after, I let out a heart-wrenching scream.
Damn it, it hurt so much. At that moment, I clearly felt the fusion of two souls as the last Book of Ten Thousand Ghosts entered my body.
I suddenly heard a series of "thud thud thud" sounds, as if someone was knocking on a door. Then I heard a voice asking me, "Fei, are you okay?" At that moment, I had no time to respond; the pain had completely overwhelmed me.
Damn it, it really hurts like hell.
"Ah..." I let out another cry the next second.
The knocking continued, and several voices rang out again, asking, "Fei, are you okay?"
"Chen Fei, are you alright?"
In the midst of the pain, I recognized the voices of Hu Qingming, Chen Fei, and Nian Chen.
I actually wanted to say that I was in trouble, but to avoid worrying them, I replied, "I'm fine." At that moment, I was completing the final step of my awakening. If I could merge this soul, I would almost be able to finish my final awakening.
Sweat poured down my forehead like a waterfall, as if thousands of silver needles were piercing into me simultaneously. I gasped for breath. Hold on, hold on. My lips were already bitten raw.
Time passed second by second as I felt the soul slowly merging together.
At the last moment, it felt like someone had gripped my throat, and just as I was about to suffocate, a wave of pleasure surged through me. The souls merged into one, and I became the most complete version of myself. My body was drenched in sweat as if I had just taken a shower. I breathed deeply, trying to fill my lungs with all the air possible.
I reached out and pushed against the coffin. "Open the coffin."
By now, I had gradually calmed down. The coffin lid was quickly lifted.
Hu Qingming asked, "Chen Fei, are you okay?"
I responded with a soft "yes," saying that I was fine. At that moment, I saw the light and realized that what was pouring out wasn't just sweat; it was blood. However, at this point, I had already become whole again and recalled everything from those years past.
Nian Chen's eyes seemed to glisten with unshed tears as I couldn't help but ask, "Feng Li, aren't you only five years old?"
Upon hearing my words, Nian Chen suddenly broke into a smile and said, "Chen Fei, you finally remembered!"
I responded with a hum, my emotions still quite complex. I glanced at Zhang Xun; they could all be the final sacrifices, having paid a heavy price for me.
Hu Qingming said, "Chen Fei, it's good that you're back."
I replied to Hu Qingming that it was time to find Changsheng. Hu Qingming added, "I believe Changsheng is already prepared."
I agreed, saying I believed so too.
Then I continued, "However, before we go, I need to visit one more place."
Nian Chen asked, "Where?"
At that moment, both Zhang Xun and Nian Chen seemed not to understand what Hu Qingming and I were discussing. Hu Qingming also inquired, "Where?"
I answered, "It's the Ninth Floor of this tower."
Zhang Xun remarked, "Weren't we not allowed to go there?"
I replied, "That was before; now it's fine." Climbing out of the coffin felt much more comfortable now. I called out for Xiao Tongwen several times but received no response.
Hu Qingming said, "It's been a hundred years; I wonder if he is still alive?"
I assured him, "He must still be alive; I gave him a way to survive back then." After my words, Hu Qingming looked at me and said, "Chen Fei, it seems you really have returned."
I said, "It's been a hundred years. It's time."
I called out several times to Xiao Tongwen without any response. Hu Qingming shouted for Xiao Fatty, but still no answer.
Nian Chen turned to me and said, "Fei, you remember now. Aren't you happy? Don't you have anything to ask me?"
Looking at how Feng Li had transformed into Nian Chen, I felt a wave of nostalgia. I asked Nian Chen, "Why did you change your name?"
Nian Chen suddenly asked, "Do you still not know the meaning of my name?"
I shook my head. Hu Qingming and Zhang Xun exchanged glances, their expressions suggesting they thought I was foolish. Hu Qingming said, "I've only known her for a short time, yet I already know what her new name means. You don't?"
I pondered for a moment and then realized that Nian Chen, pronounced as 'Nian Chen,' must mean 'missing Chen Fei.'
After a moment of thought, I replied, "I understand now."
Nian Chen said, "You finally got it."
Just as Nian Chen seemed about to say something else, I called out again for Xiao Tongwen. My shout interrupted Nian Chen's words, but at that moment, my call finally received a response.
