I blinked, the brightness was blinding.
After a moment, I saw a woman glowing with light, her back turned to me.
I was taken aback and rubbed my eyes again, thinking I was hallucinating, but to my surprise, she was indeed a person.
"Who are you?" I stepped forward.
Hearing my voice, the woman turned around. When I saw her face, I was stunned; it was a beauty I had never encountered before. If an ordinary beauty could be likened to a piece of unadorned jade that was already captivating, then this woman before me was of the finest pure jade.
"Weren't you the one who called for me?" The woman looked at my puzzled expression and chuckled lightly. To be honest, that smile made me feel as if I were in a paradise—beautiful yet surreal.
I regarded her with suspicion, my confusion deepening. Suddenly, the woman walked toward me, and her smile put me on high alert.
Under normal circumstances, I would treat a beautiful woman politely, but given the bizarre situation and her sudden appearance, I felt compelled to be cautious. Who knew what kind of demon or monster she might be?
Seeing me take a few steps back, the woman laughed out loud. "Are you really that afraid of me? Then why did you call for me? Humans are truly strange."
Humans.
My heart skipped a beat. Could it be that this woman before me was truly a demon or monster?
"Who exactly are you? If you don't reveal your identity, I won't hold back," I said as I reached for a bronze sword from beside my bed.
This sword had been given to me by Uncle Tiger just a few days ago.
The woman glanced at the bronze sword in my hand and said without fear, "That sword can only deal with some evil spirits; it is utterly useless against me. And is this how you treat a deity? You should know that people from the Madness Realm hold me in great respect."
Her words left me stunned—she was a deity.
Seeing my astonished expression, the woman suddenly turned and walked toward the window. It took me a moment to react; just as I was about to speak to her, she spoke first. "We will meet again. At that time, we can exchange conditions."
With that, she vanished.
After some time passed, I finally came to my senses. Could it be that the woman just now was truly a deity?
The next morning, just as I was about to get out of bed, there was a knock at the door. Without a doubt, it must be that girl from earlier; she always woke up the earliest.
I quickly got dressed and opened the door for Nuo Lie, who was wearing a cloak and had a joyful expression on his face. "Brother Wang Niu, we can set off now!" he said.
I was taken aback and asked Nuo Lie where we were going.
Nuo Lie gave me a glare, lightly tapped my head, and mischievously said, "Brother Wang Niu, have you forgotten? Our Madness Realm's Ritual for the Celestial Deity is about to begin! All of us Citizens need to go to the palace for the Ritual. Before that, we all have to stop outside the Imperial City for a bowl of food; it’s a sign of respect for the Celestial Deity."
Only then did I understand, so I put on my cloak and followed Nuo Lie out of the room. Indeed, after putting on the cloak, I didn’t feel as hot as before.
Once we stepped outside, Noble Father had already prepared everything and was waiting for us in the carriage.
When Noble Father saw me, he smiled and handed me a large flatbread he had taken from the side, urging me to eat it while it was warm; otherwise, I would get hungry on the way.
I was momentarily stunned, and my eyes suddenly felt moist. After all this time, Nuo Lie and her Dad treated me like family.
I didn’t take it, but Noble Father grew anxious, jumping down from the carriage and insisting on stuffing the flatbread into my hands. Only after I accepted it did he happily return to his seat.
This made me feel quite guilty; holding the flatbread in my hands left me at a loss.
Nuo Lie cheerfully nudged me. "Brother Wang Niu, go ahead and eat! This is my Dad's specialty; it's really delicious! You don’t need to worry about us; we've already eaten. Look, this carriage is filled with food!"
Hearing this from Nuo Lie made me notice that indeed, the carriage was packed with food. I stopped being polite and took a big bite. It was surprisingly good—fragrant and soft—with a uniquely tender texture that melted in my mouth.
Afterward, Nuo Lie and I climbed into the carriage, and Noble Father began driving us down the road.
Once we left this area, I saw an endless desert stretching out before us. For some reason, I felt particularly thirsty.
"Nuo Lie, are we going to get lost in the desert? There are no signs around," I said worriedly.
Nuo Lie laughed sweetly. "We won’t get lost; there are still road signs in this desert. You just haven’t noticed them yet, Brother Wang Niu."
I paused for a moment and curiously asked where these signs were.
Just as Nuo Lie was about to tell me, Noble Father at the front suddenly turned his head back and scolded him. Nuo Lie pouted and lowered his head reluctantly. "Brother Wang Niu, I'm sorry; I can’t tell you because you’re not from our kingdom."
I greeted him and managed to understand the situation, but I couldn't help but feel curious about Noble Father's recent actions. I looked at Noble Father, and a strange feeling suddenly rose in my heart.
Throughout our journey, we encountered no one, which kept things from getting boring, as Noble Father would share some interesting stories that were quite engaging.
At that moment, the carriage came to a halt. Noble Father jumped down in a panic and shouted something strange at Noble Father.
Noble Father's face turned pale, and before I could react, my hand was grasped tightly by Noble Father.
“Brother Wang Niu, get off the carriage and kneel,” he said, pulling me down from the carriage and forcing me to kneel on the desert sand.
Just as I was about to ask what was happening, suddenly, the sky darkened as if something had blocked out the light.
“Brother Wang Niu, don’t speak. They are coming. Don’t look at them, or they will take you away,” Noble Father whispered urgently.
I froze for a moment. What were "they"?
Following Noble Father's instructions, I knelt down but didn’t lower my head. Instead, I glanced sideways and caught a whiff of an extremely unpleasant odor. Not only that, but I also felt a chilling wind circulating around us.
Could it be ghosts?
Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a piece of white cloth appearing in my line of sight. My curiosity piqued, I dared to look up slightly, only to find an empty garment.
Strangely enough, it looked as if someone were wearing it, yet there was no one inside.
“Caw caw caw.”
An ancient and hoarse voice pressed down from above me. Instantly, goosebumps covered my entire body; the sound emanated from the garment beside me.
What on earth was that?
Suddenly, I felt something pressing against my back, rubbing against me. Before long, I sensed a liquid dripping onto me.
It was sticky and uncomfortable. I desperately wanted to stand up and shake off whatever was on my back, but at that moment, Noble Father held my hand tightly as if signaling me to stay still.
I had no choice but to endure it, and fortunately, after a short while, those things disappeared.
Noble Father stood up first, quickly approaching us and helping both me and Bu Lie to our feet, asking if we were alright.
Just as I was about to say that I was fine, Alie suddenly shouted in terror, pointing at my back. "Dad, look at Brother Wang Niu! He has been chosen by the Evil Desert Spirit! What should we do? He can't come with us; otherwise, the gods will be angry!"
Evil Desert Spirit.
What is that? I looked at Bu Lie in confusion.
At that moment, Noble Father's gaze fell on me, and his expression became quite complicated.
The atmosphere grew strange; Bu Lie fell silent, and Noble Father's expression became even more peculiar.
Instinctively, I reached back to touch my spine and felt a sticky mass there. No matter how I tried, I couldn't get it off.
I frowned as Noble Father suddenly sat down in the carriage. Seeing this, Bu Lie also climbed in.
"Brother Wang Niu, I'm afraid you can't come with us. You have been cursed by the Evil Desert Spirit; this is a great taboo in the Madness Realm," Bu Lie said, his face showing a mix of difficulty and guilt.
