I glanced at him; his hands trembled as if in a spasm, his expression filled with anxiety.
Yes, the Bronze Coffin was about to be opened, and his secret might lie within the puzzle game that Fat Ma had mentioned.
As we leaned in closer again, the lid of the Bronze Coffin shifted half an inch, creating a small gap with the Coffin.
"It should be able to push open now," I said.
The Mud Man nodded.
"Then what are we waiting for?" Fat Ma said impatiently. With that, he pushed against the Coffin Lid, causing it to scrape against the Coffin with a loud noise.
Fat Ma rubbed his hands together, muttering, "I have to see who you really are."
However, Fat Ma's strength was clearly insufficient. Soon, the Mud Man and I joined in, and together we strained with all our might to push the Coffin Lid aside halfway.
Fat Ma and I were nearly exhausted, panting heavily. The Mud Man, however, stood firm in front of the Bronze Coffin, peering inside.
Fat Ma casually placed a hand on his shoulder and asked, "What’s inside?"
Since we hadn’t had a chance to look yet, the Mud Man moved mechanically but didn’t respond.
We didn’t wait for him to answer; we leaned in to look inside the coffin. Our reactions mirrored that of the Mud Man's earlier response.
We were all stunned into silence! None of us dared to make a sound.
It felt as if any unnecessary noise would awaken whatever lay within the coffin.
We exchanged glances, our faces pale and abnormal, slowly retreating…
At that moment, a strange scene unfolded; the previously sealed passageway door suddenly swung open.
Without any hesitation, the three of us dashed backward, not daring to look back again.
After we escaped the main burial chamber, the stone door closed behind us.
We were all drenched in cold sweat, a chill running down my spine.
"Let's go," I said, my voice tinged with panic.
Fat Ma cursed under his breath, "Damn." It was his way of responding to me. The Mud Man nodded, but none of us dared to mention what we had encountered inside the Bronze Coffin.
As we walked through the dark passageway, I asked Fat Ma for a cigarette. After lighting it, I took a deep drag and immediately broke into a fit of coughing.
"Old Sun, take it easy," Fat Ma advised.
I coughed again, unable to stop.
Fat Ma came closer and patted my back, but it was no use; I continued to cough until I suddenly felt a warmth in my throat. Covering my mouth with my hand, I realized blood was staining my palm.
Afterward, I felt slightly better. The Mud Man handed me some water; I rinsed my mouth and took a big gulp.
My spirits sank again.
When we left, we didn’t bother to discern the path and just continued downward. After passing through a chamber resembling an atrium and crossing another burial chamber, we arrived at the room where we had previously opened the coffin.
As we continued onward, we approached the location of the corridor.
When we reached the spot where the ten coffins had been, our steps faltered. All the coffins were open, but we didn’t linger; after all, it was over.
I sighed.
Just as we were nearing the corridor, the Mud Man signaled us to stop and went to check the situation. The previous encounter with the Corpse Worm had left a significant shadow over us; if it weren't for the Mud Man, we might not have made it out alive.
Without waiting for our response, the Mud Man dashed ahead.
Of course, Fat Ma and I couldn’t let him face danger alone, so we followed after him. Fat Ma had injured his foot, so he was moving a bit slower!
As I was about to exit the Passageway, the Mud Man returned, uttering a few words: “One person is dead.”
Fat Ma and I were stunned. One person dead?
I maneuvered around the Mud Man and headed toward the corridor.
There lay a corpse on the ground, already covered in Corpse Worms.
My flashlight beam was dim, barely illuminating the scene.
The Corpse Worms emitted a blood-curdling shriek that pierced through the darkness.
With a burst of Cold Fireworks from the Mud Man, blinding light flooded the entire space.
These creatures, accustomed to dark environments, were startled and began to fly chaotically around, their sounds growing more haunting as they searched desperately for shadowy corners.
It was at that moment that I clearly saw the body lying on the ground, utterly unrecognizable, yet I could still tell who it was.
Fat Ma wiped his eyes, trying to see more clearly.
I stood frozen in place, unsure of what I was thinking at that moment.
The Mud Man noticed my strange expression and pointed at the corpse, asking, "Is this your friend?"
I nodded slightly and replied, "Sort of."
Finally getting a clear look, Fat Ma exclaimed, "How could it be this kid!"
It was Li Jie; I recognized him by his clothes. But why he ended up here was no longer important—after all, he was dead.
Although we had not gotten along well before, all of that seemed trivial in the face of death.
My heart was filled with mixed emotions; a living person had just died like this.
After a while, Fat Ma said to me, "We should take him out and bury him."
I instinctively nodded.
As the light from the Cold Fireworks slowly dimmed and began to fade away, the cries of the Corpse Worm echoed around us.
The Mud Man somehow managed to find a torch; these dark creatures were most afraid of light.
As I approached the body, I saw it was already riddled with holes.
The face was shattered, the skin had turned black, completely devoid of any trace of its original features.
"Let me handle this heavy work," Fat Ma said to me.
As soon as Fat Ma finished speaking, Li Jie, who was lying on the ground, suddenly sat up straight, startled. His eyes were wide open, staring directly at us. I tried to calm myself and called out tentatively, but there was no response.
Fat Ma immediately recognized the situation. "It's Last Gasp," he said, and without a hint of disgust, he hoisted Li Jie's body onto his shoulder.
The Mud Man held a torch, keeping a vigilant watch over our surroundings, wary of the Corpse Worms taking advantage of the moment.
Especially when the scent of blood filled the air, the previously sharp and piercing sounds began to grow restless. The Mud Man urged me and Fat Ma to move quickly.
I nodded in agreement and climbed up along the columns of the corridor. We had come down from there before; our only exit was above.
Once I reached the top, Fat Ma handed me Li Jie's body.
At that moment, the Mud Man spoke up. "Not good," he said as we saw the Corpse Worms starting to emerge from the dark corners.
They lingered just out of reach of the torchlight, ready to attack at any moment.
The torch seemed like it wouldn't last much longer; it was a makeshift one created by the Mud Man.
Fat Ma found it difficult to climb up. I asked him to give me the rope, and after much effort, I finally managed to pull him up. Meanwhile, the light from the torch was growing weak, and I could see the Corpse Worms preparing to pounce…
