A sudden wave of suffocation surged in my heart, only to vanish without a trace in an instant.
I couldn't help but turn back, only to see the Faceless Female Corpse lying back in the coffin.
Fat Ma, looking dazed, urgently shouted, "Old Sun, come here quickly."
By the time I reacted, a rush of heat surged through me. I covered my mouth with my palm and began to cough violently. When I removed my hand, I realized I had coughed up blood again, and I discreetly wiped away the fresh blood.
Fat Ma had already approached.
At that moment, I called out, "It's fine now."
Everyone gathered around. Fat Ma asked suspiciously, "Old Sun, what did you do to it?"
Seeing his wicked gaze, I couldn't help but think of the worst.
I replied irritably, " Fat Ma, can you be serious for once?"
Fat Ma chuckled awkwardly a few times.
Old Mountain Master examined the corpse and said in disbelief, "Could it be that was the Last Gasp?"
His words stunned everyone present.
"That can't be true! Old Mountain Master," Fat Ma exclaimed in denial.
Old Mountain Master furrowed his brow and did not respond to Fat Ma's words; instead, he continued to inspect the Faceless Female Corpse.
I also found it absurd. The term "Last Gasp" refers to a sudden surge of energy just moments before death, yet this "Faceless Female Corpse" could not have died just a few minutes ago.
I turned around to look into the coffin. The "Faceless Female Corpse" lay motionless inside, while the "Old Mountain Master" held a pair of tweezers and gently pried open the corpse's mouth, extracting a black pearl from within.
The "Old Mountain Master's" gaze was entirely focused on the black pearl as he slowly placed it in his hand. Before we could take a closer look, the "Black Pearl" unexpectedly transformed into a wisp of blue smoke and vanished from his grasp.
The "Old Mountain Master's" pupils constricted sharply, and he quickly removed his gloves, but it was too late. When he opened his hand, a black mark appeared in his palm.
Just as all our attention was on the "Old Mountain Master," the clay figure shouted, "Not good!"
I shifted my gaze back to the coffin and saw that the skin of the "Faceless Female Corpse" was rapidly aging. Moisture was visibly evaporating, her cheeks sank in, and her facial bones protruded. Her once-black hair turned dry and straw-like. In an instant, the "Faceless Female Corpse" became hideously ugly, her body shriveling.
"What the hell is going on?" exclaimed "Fat Ma," looking incredulous.
The once rosy complexion had instantly turned to a skeleton. I couldn't help but feel a chill run down my spine as cold sweat broke out in my palms. It must have been the effect of that black pearl. We waited for a moment, hoping the "Faceless Female Corpse" would stop changing and that there would be no further transformation, which eased my mind.
The "Old Mountain Master's" complexion had returned to normal, but the black mark had not disappeared.
He composed himself and continued his work, calling out to "Fat Ma," "Get the body out!"
"Fat Ma" paused for a moment before realizing what was happening. Though reluctant, he knew he had to fulfill his duty by removing the Mingqi from inside the coffin.
After all, facing the "Old Mountain Master," "Fat Ma" dared not refuse.
He bent down and lifted the feet of the "Faceless Female Corpse." This time, the "Old Mountain Master" did not act personally; it was "Black Glasses" who helped him. Together they carried the "Faceless Female Corpse" down to the stone platform below.
It seemed that with this ebony coffin, the "Old Mountain Master" was determined to proceed.
The clay figurine's complexion was not good.
Xiao Nan followed closely behind the Old Mountain Master, asking, "Master, do you need my help?"
However, the Old Mountain Master was too preoccupied to pay him any mind. I could see the glint in his eyes as his hand gently stroked the coffin.
After a few minutes passed, he signaled for us to lower the Ebony Coffin.
Since we had already agreed on this beforehand, we had no choice but to honor our commitment. Just as we were preparing to proceed, the clay figurine pressed down on the coffin and said, "We can't move it; there are living creatures below."
The Old Mountain Master looked up at the clay figurine. I caught a glimpse of him and noticed a faint purple hue in his complexion, which sent an involuntary shiver down my spine.
Moreover, I sensed that the Old Mountain Master was about to lose his temper.
I tugged at the clay figurine, but he remained unmoved. Fat Ma also sensed the tension and stepped forward to mediate, pulling the clay figurine back while whispering in his ear, "Why are you worrying about this? Once we move the coffin, we'll make a run for it."
Fat Ma shot me a glance, and I knew he had no good intentions.
As they approached the stone platform again, the clay figurine's expression softened slightly. Since the Old Mountain Master had appeared, he seemed to have developed a resistance towards them.
"Alright! Let's get to work," Fat Ma said with a grin.
The Ebony Coffin was not as heavy as we had imagined; it didn't require the strength of six people. The key was that Black Glasses was unexpectedly strong.
But just as we moved the Ebony Coffin aside, I felt several scratches appear on my wrist, and a sharp pain shot straight to my brain. The others experienced the same sensation.
"Fat Ma" took on the role of the boss, openly shouting, "Old Sun, you idiot, move faster!"
Upon hearing his voice, the idiot quickly retreated from the stone platform.
I felt a sharp pain and couldn't care less; I jumped down from the stone platform.
However, we had underestimated the threat of the creatures lurking below. Just as "Fat Ma" finished speaking, I felt a burning pain spreading across my back, and I cried out in agony.
Soon after, "Fat Ma" was not spared either; he began to curse loudly.
I turned to look back, shining my flashlight into the tomb. Many pairs of glowing eyes had appeared in the chamber.
The sound of guttural growls grew louder, echoing back and forth, sending chills down our spines. In the next moment, "Xiao Nan's" scream pierced through the air.
My heart tightened.
"Fat Ma" was already about to enter the tomb passage.
I rushed over to "Xiao Nan," helping him remove the creatures clinging to his back. It was then that I realized these creatures were actually wild cats.
My hair stood on end. In my moment of distraction, one of the wild cats let out a piercing screech and lunged at me. A claw mark appeared on my arm, drawing blood.
I winced in pain and forcefully shook off the wild cat. It landed on the ground, screeching as if it could smell blood, becoming even more frenzied.
It looked emaciated but full of ferocity; it resembled not a cat but a wolf, surrounding its prey.
Seeing so many pairs of glowing eyes light up in the tomb made it clear that there was no shortage of these wild cats.
Xiao Nan was still crouched on the ground, too frightened to stand up. I kicked him to get him moving, and he trembled as he rose to his feet. I handed him a dagger.
In a daze, I suddenly saw four or five wild cats appear before me, sending a chill down my spine.
I calculated my options in my mind, thinking of retreating to the wall to avoid being attacked from both sides, but these wild cats gave me no chance.
They began to make guttural sounds, and after the last call, they all lunged at me at once.
I urged Xiao Nan to run, but it was too late for me; I was knocked down by the wild cats.
I covered my head with my hands to protect myself and struggled to get back up, accumulating numerous wounds along the way.
Just then, I saw a Night Cat open its mouth wide, revealing its fangs as it lunged toward me. No! I thought in fear.
At the moment its fangs were about to reach me, I closed my eyes, unable to look. But then came a horrifying screech.
Xiao Nan kicked it away with one swift motion, and another scream followed as he took down two of them in total.
Seizing the opportunity, I scrambled to my feet and shook off several wild cats that had clung to me. At this point, I had no idea how many wounds covered my body.
The smell of blood began to spread around me as more and more wild cats gathered; what started as four or five had swelled to over ten.
I shielded Xiao Nan as we retreated toward the wall.
At that moment, Fat Ma's voice rang out: "Old Sun, hold on! Fat Master will be there to save you soon."
I couldn't afford to let my guard down; I had to stay alert against them.
I whispered, "Xiao Nan, why did you come back after I told you to run?"
Xiao Nan stubbornly replied, "We of the Northern Faction are not the kind to fear for our lives."
I was momentarily speechless. After a few seconds, I said, "Wait for me to draw their attention, and then take the chance to escape."
Xiao Nan responded, "I won't!"
"Are you not scared anymore?" I asked with a smile.
Xiao Nan hesitantly said, "Well... I am scared, but my master taught me not to be afraid of death."
The wildcats approached step by step, their bloodthirsty gazes locked onto me, each one eager for the chase.
At that moment, I dashed away quickly, and the wildcats followed me in a frenzy.
As I was running, I unexpectedly collided with something soft and fell back a few steps.
"Old Sun, why are you running? I'm here to save you!" It was Fat Ma's voice.
"Save your own dead head! Hurry and run!" I urged anxiously.
"With Fat Master here, why would we need to run?" Fat Ma said confidently. This exchange happened in just a few seconds amidst the thunder and lightning.
Afterward, Fat Ma said, "Old Sun, you were right."
"Then why are you blocking my way?" I said angrily.
As soon as we turned around, the mud man approached us again.
A voice in my heart whispered that it was over. The three of us had no choice but to brace ourselves and deal with these wild cats.
Just as I turned, I got hit again.
Fat Ma swung the Luoyang Shovel and struck one of the wild cats that lunged at him. After a moment of surprise, he quickly regained his confidence, patting the Luoyang Shovel and declaring, "Fat Master has never been at a disadvantage in his life."
With that, he boldly stepped forward, hitting each cat with precision. The wild cats trembled and began to retreat at the sight of Fat Ma.
Noticing that I was unarmed, Fat Ma tossed me a dagger.
The croaking sounds echoed like frogs in the fields at night, but these cats' cries were eerily terrifying.
With plenty of momentum, Fat Ma strode forward while the mud man illuminated the area.
Taking advantage of a momentary pause, I glanced over at Old Mountain Master and Black Glasses; they were still by the Ebony Coffin.
Their flashlights were much more powerful than ours.
I could see that Old Mountain Master remained calm, while Xiao Nan had returned to their side.
At that moment, I witnessed Black Glasses' skills; his strikes were almost surgical, creating an aura that was only slightly less intimidating than Fat Ma's.
Fat Ma pressed forward with a triumphant smile, seemingly forgetting his precarious situation.
