"Going alone is even more dangerous," Zhang Tong said seriously.
I was aware of the environment over there; it was narrow and hard to maneuver. Looking at Zhang Tong's serious face, I fell silent for a moment. "You can only wait outside."
"Brother Sun, I'm going too."
I nodded and warned them to wait outside, which they agreed to. I quickly walked toward the location. Once I arrived, I stopped and turned to them, saying, "You all wait for me here."
"But..."
"No buts."
Zhang Tong hesitated to speak.
"Brother Sun, be careful."
I acknowledged him and added, "If anything happens to me, don't worry about it. Just find Fatty and the Mud Man."
Residual Anger agreed.
"Good, then." With that, I stepped into the narrow space.
Suddenly, I heard Zhang Tong's voice behind me: "Take care of yourself. If you notice anything off, retreat immediately."
I responded without turning back.
With each step forward, my movements grew slower, and after crouching for so long, my legs began to feel numb. Despite the chill in the air, I was still sweating from the strain.
I kept reminding myself that I was almost there.
Light pierced through the darkness as I moved a little further. Suddenly, a pair of glaring eyes lit up in the shadows. I instinctively gasped, and even though I had mentally prepared myself, fear gripped my heart.
Damn it, I muttered under my breath to bolster my courage and quickened my pace. After moving about ten more meters, the space around me felt confined; I had to continue advancing while crouched.
I gripped a knife tightly in my hand, ready for any potential danger.
Those eyes were strikingly bright, seemingly close yet somehow still distant. I focused intently on them, my mind consumed by nothing else.
Suddenly, a wave of realization washed over me; it felt like I was about to discern their shape. In that moment, I lost track of my footing and stepped into empty space. My body tilted unexpectedly, and before I could react, I fell with a startled cry.
Outside, the two guards stood watch.
“Did you hear a scream from inside?” Zhang Tong asked.
Residual Anger shook his head, indicating he hadn’t heard anything.
A look of concern crossed Zhang Tong's face as he called out into the darkness, “Old Sun!” His voice quickly faded into the air without receiving any response.
He shouted several more times but still received no answer.
Zhang Tong murmured, "Something's not right. Something might have happened."
"Residual Anger, hurry and call Fatty and the others."
Residual Anger looked anxious. "Zhang Tong, what about you?"
"Don't worry about me, just go." "What are you waiting for? Go!" Residual Anger responded hurriedly and rushed back.
Zhang Tong didn't hesitate at all and immediately moved toward the direction I had disappeared, calling out, "Old Sun." The voice echoed lightly in the still air.
The darkness enveloped Zhang Tong like a thick ink, tightening around her. She felt nervous, and a wave of fear surged within her; the surroundings were silent, with only her voice reverberating.
Just as Zhang Tong brushed her hair back with her hand, suddenly, two glowing points appeared before her. They resembled a pair of luminous eyes, startling Zhang Tong so much that she stumbled backward, a chill running down her spine as a wave of terror washed over her.
Zhang Tong steadied herself, suppressing her fear and began to retreat. However, after taking a few steps back, she stopped and told herself: No, he might be in danger. I can't just stand by and do nothing. With that thought, Zhang Tong gathered her courage and moved forward again.
One meter, ten meters...
At any moment, Zhang Tong let out a panicked scream as she fell down, and then silence returned to the area, plunging it back into darkness.
Residual Anger was panting heavily as he ran with all his might. He understood the urgency of the situation. After running for about ten minutes, he finally saw some light ahead and quickened his pace.
The mud figures Fat Ma and Huang Lin were talking.
Residual Anger recognized the figures and shouted, "Not good! Brother Sun is in trouble!"
"Fat Ma" reacted immediately, shouting, "What happened?" His tone was filled with tension.
I didn't know either.
"Fat Ma" quickly ran over and said, "Take me there."
The Mud Man seemed to have guessed the situation. Without waiting for "Residual Anger" to speak, he charged ahead.
"Residual Anger," still catching his breath, knew they couldn't afford to delay and chased after the Mud Man.
"Brother Sun, what exactly happened?"
"Residual Anger" exhaled sharply, "I don't know either, and Zhang Tong is still over there."
"Then let's hurry!"
With a grunt of agreement, "Residual Anger" and "Huang Lin" ran in that direction.
"Mud Man, do you think Old Sun might be in serious trouble?"
The Mud Man, running ahead of "Fat Ma," didn't respond.
"Old Sun is being too careless. He shouldn't act on his own without Fat Master around..."
"Enough chatter; saving him is the priority," the Mud Man said. "Fat Ma" had no rebuttal and simply closed his mouth, focusing on running faster.
About five minutes later, the Mud Man arrived. He crouched down to examine the footprints on the ground and sniffed the air. Then he quickly moved inside.
The Mud Man was fast, and the Fat Ma clearly couldn't keep up due to his physical limitations.
After about a quarter of an hour, the Mud Man stopped. The Fat Ma called out from behind, asking if he had found Old Sun.
" Fat Ma, hurry back and get the rope."
Upon hearing this, Fat Ma had a rough idea of what was happening but couldn't turn around, so he instructed the two people behind him to bring all the backpacks inside.
Once the rope was secured, the Mud Man descended along it, followed closely by Fat Ma and Huang Linyu, who was filled with anger.
The scene shifted back to me...
The moment my foot slipped, I realized I might be in trouble. Sure enough, I fell into the air and when I hit the ground, I thought I heard my bones crack.
I didn't lose consciousness but lay on the ground unable to move for a while. I stared up at the ceiling; my flashlight had shattered, but thankfully the wire connected to the bulb hadn't broken, so the light remained on.
After lying there for some time and feeling a bit better, I tried to shift my body to get up. Just then, a shadow flashed before my eyes accompanied by a scream.
In the next second, I was in trouble.
I nearly choked on my own blood as I regained consciousness in an instant; the bones in my hand that had been propping me up broke.
Sweat poured from my forehead in beads of agony, and finally, I fainted as I had wished.
After Zhang Tong fell, she felt herself land on something soft. Realizing she was unharmed, excitement surged through her, but as she looked beneath her, surprise escaped her lips, followed by concern for my breathing.
"Is your breathing so weak that you might be dying?" Zhang Tong said, a hint of panic in her voice.
In my dazed state, I thought I heard her voice.
"Old Sun, you can't be in trouble! I'm going to find you some water," she exclaimed. Just as she stood up, she crouched down again to survey the dark surroundings.
"I can't leave you here alone; it’s too dangerous," she said, helping me to my feet and dragging me along.
When people are in a hurry, they often act blindly. In a place like this, how could there possibly be water? If I had even a shred of awareness or could utter a word, I would rather lie still and avoid this torment.
Sweat trickled down my forehead. My consciousness seemed to be gradually returning, but as my eyes opened, a sharp pain shot through me.
I cried out in agony.
Zhang Tong's voice was tense as she asked, "Are you okay?"
I gritted my teeth, trying not to make a sound. Zhang Tong was sweating profusely.
"I'm fine."
"How can you be fine? You're drenched in sweat," she said, struggling to keep the flashlight steady as its beam flickered.
I winced again and weakly replied, "Could you please put me down?"
Zhang Tong hurriedly responded, carefully placing me on the ground with my head resting on her lap. My face flushed slightly as I tried to move my head away.
"It's okay, just lie on my lap," she said.
Once I lay down, the pain eased considerably.
My breathing was uneven, and my whole body ached. I had fallen hard earlier, and I was certain that my hand was broken.
"Don't touch my hand."
Zhang Tong's hand froze in mid-air. Having expended some energy earlier, her breath was uneven, and her complexion fluctuated between pale and flushed, with her hair slightly disheveled.
Finally, she said, "I just wanted to wipe the sweat off your face."
"Oh," I replied, feeling a bit embarrassed. After she wiped away the sweat, I asked her to turn off the flashlight to conserve battery. The place we were in seemed similar to above; it was also a natural cave.
Zhang Tong extinguished the flashlight, and I said, "Once I recover a bit, we'll go look for an exit."
She replied softly.
The situation we faced was quite dire. First of all, I was injured; secondly, our equipment was minimal. Most critically, we had no food or water.
The only consolation was that I knew the others would definitely come looking for us.
Half an hour passed just like that.
Zhang Tong shifted slightly, and I realized that my head must have been uncomfortable for her. I hesitated a bit before saying, "Just put my head on the ground."
"No way, that would give you a few big bumps."
"It's fine, you'll be uncomfortable like this."
"I'm okay," in the darkness, her face seemed to flush, though I couldn't see it.
After a while, I thought I heard footsteps. My eyes brightened, and I perked up, asking Zhang Tong, "Is someone coming?"
Zhang Tong glanced back and replied, "No one is here!"
That didn't seem right; I could swear I heard footsteps.
After a moment, Zhang Tong said, "It really seems like there is someone."
The footsteps echoed sparsely for a while before suddenly lights flickered on.
They had arrived; it must be them. I tried to call out, "Fatty, is that you?"
About a second later, Fatty's voice came through, "Old Sun, you're not dead!"
Hearing that voice made me feel helpless yet somewhat relieved. I turned to Zhang Tong and said, "It's okay now."
